Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in America and Italy, Vol. 1 of 2 I have nothing particular to say respecting the Travels in America here submitted to the reader: the narrative of them is taken, like the subject of The Natchez, from the original manuscript of the latter work. These T ravels carry with them their commentary and their history. My different works contain frequent recollections of my peregrinations in America. I thought at first to collect them and to introduce them under their proper dates into my narrative, but I relinquished this intention to avoid in serting them twice; I have therefore contented myself with referring to these passages. Some, however, I have quoted when they appeared necessary to the due understanding of the text, and were not too long. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in America and Italy, Vol. 2 of 2 To this first and general cause of war among the Savages are added other reasons for taking up arms, arising from some superstitious motives, some' do mestic dissension, some interest connected with their traffic with Europeans. Thus with the north ern hordes of America the slaughter of female beavers had become a legitimate cause of war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in America and Italy, Vol. 2 of 2 Among the Savages all hear arms-men, women, and children; hut the corps of combatants is composed in general of one fifth of the tribe. Fifteen years is the legal age for military service. War is the chief business of the Savages, .and. the sole ground of their policy; it has something more legitimate than war between civilized nations, because it is almost always declared for the very existence of the tribe by which it is undertaken; its object being the preservation of hunting grounds, or lands adapted to culture. At the time of the French Revolution he took part at first with the exiled royalists, but, returning to France, was employed in a diplomatic service by Napoleon. On the murder of the Duc d'Enghein, he threw up his office as ambassador to the Republic of Valais. He supported the restoration monarchy, becoming a minister of state, and was appointed ambassador-extraordinary to England. He visited America when a young man, and afterwards traveled in the east. Chateaubriand's books abound in passages of brilliant description, and there is no French author before him whose prose writings can compare with his in the power of conveying the beauty and mystery of nature. He is called the father of the French romantic school of writers and died at Paris, July 4, 1848. This historical travelogue recounts his travels in America and, later, in Italy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from When Mother Lets Us Travel in Italy Perhaps the wanderings of an American family in Italy will interest not only those who can follow in their footsteps, but also those who must stay at home. The journeying of an entire family is rarely a mere holiday, and in the case of Mr. And Mrs. Car ter, and their children, business of an important nature dictates their route. Mr. Carter has been sent abroad by his native state, to study the design ing and building of foreign cities. Sometimes, he is able to make his work interest ing to his children; often he can allow himself a holiday, and join them in excursions to places that hold little promise of help to those who are dream ing of a City Beautiful in Texas. It is to be hoped that the Italian experiences of Alice, Jack and the twins, will lead their friends to follow their fortunes into France and Holland, and the other fascinating countries of Europe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italian Journeys, Vol. 1 We did not know, when we started from home in Venice, on the 8th of November 1864, that we had taken the longest road to Rome. We thought that of all the proverbial paths to the Eternal City that leading to Padua, and thence through Ferrara and Bologna to Florence, and so down the sea-shore from Leghorn to Civita Vecchia, was the best, the briefest, and the cheapest. Who could have dreamed that this path, so wisely and carefully chosen, would lead us to Genoa, conduct us on shipboard, toss us four dizzy days and nights, and set us down, void, battered, and bewildered, in Naples?
