Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travels Here and There possesses stories from the heart about places far and near. Included in this volume readers are entertained by Larry Welchs recollections of travel to Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Malawi, Michigan, Nepal, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, Vietnam, and Zambia. The final chapter is a personal story that involved a short journey from home to a hospital in Thailand and what transpired. Embedded with the stories are descriptions of geography, history, urban planning, and details on what went into making people famous or infamous as the case might be. Larry likes heroes and that shows through in his descriptions of what made some people great. Strolling through castles, fortresses, markets, museums, palaces, parks, Roman ruins, or dining on street food and riding buses or trains, will leave readers hungry for more and even give them a better appreciation for their own travels. In Innocents Abroad, Mark Twain wrote, Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all ones lifetime. Amen, Mr. Twain!

Travelling with Stephen Katz--also his wonderful sidekick in A Walk in the Woods--he wanders from Hammerfest in the far north, to Istanbul on the cusp of Asia. As he makes his way round this incredibly varied continent, he retraces his travels as a student twenty years before with caustic hilarity.

But his current life is a far cry from his previous career…as a time-traveling secret agent from over a century in the future. Stranded in suburban San Francisco since the 1990s after a botched mission, Kin has kept his past hidden from everyone around him, until one afternoon, his “rescue” team arrives—eighteen years too late. Their mission: return Kin to 2142, where he’s been gone only weeks, not years, and where another family is waiting for him. A family he can’t remember. Torn between two lives, Kin’s desperate efforts to stay connected to both will threaten to destroy the agency and even history itself. With his daughter’s very existence at risk, he will have to take one final trip to save her—even if it means breaking all the rules of time travel in the process. “Heartfelt and thrilling… Chen’s concept is unique, and [his characters’] agony is deeply moving. Quick pacing, complex characters, and a fascinating premise.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2012 Critics Choice Book Award of the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) World-renowned filmmaker and feminist, postcolonial thinker Trinh T. Minh-ha is one of the most powerful and articulate voices in both independent filmmaking and cultural politics. Elsewhere, Within Here is an engaging look at travel across national borders--as a foreigner, a tourist, an immigrant, a refugee—in a pre- and post-9/11 world. Who is welcome where? What does it mean to feel out of place in the country you call home? When does the stranger appear in these times of dark metamorphoses? These are some of the issues addressed by the author as she examines the cultural meaning and complexities of travel, immigration, home and exile. The boundary, seen both as a material and immaterial event, is where endings pass into beginnings. Building upon themes present in her earlier work on hybridity and displacement in the median passage, and illuminating the ways in which "every voyage can be said to involve a re-siting of boundaries," Trinh T. Minh-ha leads her readers through an investigation of what it means to be an insider and an outsider in this "epoch of global fear." Elsewhere, Within Here is essential reading for those interested in contemporary feminist thought and postcolonial studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hong Cheng: Memoirs of a Turbulent Life through Sunlight-tinted Red Earth Storm is a compilation of memories of Hsueh Chi Pei translated from his Chinese brushstrokes or told to me when he was over eighty years old. He begins his story from the place of his birth in a tiny village Dawu at the border of Sichuan, China, and Kham, Tibet; through primary and middle school in KhangDing and ChengDu; to the war and political colleges in Nanking and eventually to Chungking; and World War II and the Japanese invasion of China. It tells of his early years: his stern father who was almost never at home because of his job as protectorate of the far western and southern regions of the realm, his encounters with the local Tibetans boys who were always at odds with the Han boys, and his meetings with several holy lamas and monks. With his fathers insistence, he was one of the first Chinese boys, at the age of seven, to start English lessons, which served him well in his later years. With his unusual curly hair and quick wit, he was a very popular little figure in his village. He spoke about his work in the Opium Detox Center where he met his wife and how he accompanied her to meet her family and were caught in the line of refugees escaping from the Japanese. All in all, the book describes what the title tried to describe: a life full of change and strife but with glints of sunshine and humor. I have kept the title of this book as close a translation to Hong Cheng as possible. It is a very personal narration, and I have tried to keep the words as close to his way of speaking. He deliberately refused to get into the political climate of the times, except for a few remarks and observations here and there, because it was simply too painful for him to relive those conditions. So I let be at that. He was not very specific about dates and spoke almost like a stream of consciousness, and as he narrated, we wept and I transcribed. Occasionally, we had to consult a Chinese-English dictionary when I could not find the word or meaning he was trying to express.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expository commentary on the book of Exodus, Philip Graham Ryken mines the story of Israel’s escape from Egypt for knowledge of God’s character and instruction for his followers. Theologically instructive and decidedly pastoral, this commentary leads readers to rejoice at God’s work in the life of every person who follows him on the path to spiritual freedom. Ryken skillfully relates how the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery anticipated the salvation accomplished in Jesus Christ, proving that God remembers his covenant and always delivers on his promises. For those who preach, teach, and study God’s Word, this book is more than just a commentary; it is a celebration of God’s faithfulness. The book of Daniel abounds with powerful imagery showcasing God’s unmatched glory and wise plan for the future. In this accessible commentary, pastor Rodney Stortz highlights the coming triumph of God's kingdom, offering pastors and Bible teachers a resource to help them explain and apply Daniel’s message to Christians today. Stortz’s careful exegesis and perceptive applications focus on personal holiness, the wisdom and power of God, and the importance of Daniel’s prophecies concerning the Messiah and the Antichrist. In addition, this commentary looks to the New Testament to shed light on Daniel’s prophecies about the future. Part of the Preaching the Word series.

Book excerpt: This book is about the youth, schools, places, and ideas that significantly deepen my life. It examines insights, philosophies, and observations that I read, question, seriously investigate, and live. The students in the classroom can be natural inquirers who through connections they discover make sense of the world and the things and ideas they pursue and question. These students, just as humankind from its beginning journey and exploration, use a fundamental approach to observe, investigate and probe to understand the world. This is the source of our human depth and learning.
