Book excerpt: Wine-loving travelers will savor this introduction to Spain's important wine regions, providing a background to leading bodegas and wineries you will find there. Spain has more land under vine than any other country in Europe, and over the past thirty years has transformed its wine industry into one of the greatest in the world. Using a unique combination of native and imported grape varieties, Spain now produces a wide range of quality wines. Yet its wine regions and villages, many of which are located in unspoiled and remote areas, remain relatively unknown. The authors introduce the wine-loving traveler to these regions providing a background to their wines and leading bodegas, or wineries.
Book Synopsis The new vignerons by : Luis Gutiérrez
Download or read book The new vignerons written by Luis Gutiérrez and published by Planeta Gastro. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I traveled over the course of almost two years with photographer Estanis Núñez, an old friend of mine, just like we used to in our rock'n'roll days, taking photos, eating and drinking together. This book contains 14 profiles of vignerons, each of them different, spanning most of the wine-producing regions of Spain. There are others, but this is my personal selection. Their profiles talk about the history, landscape, vineyards, cuisine, passion and tradition of their region. You won't find tannins, anthocyanins, vintages, points or tasting notes here. I am hardly going to talk about wine at all. But you will find the often-forgotten human side and the context of what is in the bottle, including local cuisine (where wine plays an important role) as well as each winegrower's personal take on it. . Their main aim in life is to portray the uniqueness of their vineyards, villages and landscapes through a bottle of wine. Wine that can transport you back to the time and place it was produced the moment you drink it. These are the new vignerons. A new generation of Spanish winegrowers."
Download or read book ¡Vino! written by Karl J. Trybus and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ¡Vino! explores the history and identity of Spanish wine production from the mid-nineteenth century to today. Nineteenth-century infestations of oidium fungus and phylloxera aphids devastated French and Italian vineyards but didn't extend to the Iberian Peninsula at first, giving Spanish vintners the opportunity to increase their international sales. Once French and Italian wineries rebounded, however, Spanish wine producers had to up their game. Spain could not produce only table wine; it needed a quality product to compete with the supposedly superior French wines. After the Spanish Civil War the totalitarian Franco regime turned its attention to Spain's devastated agricultural sector, but the country's wine industry did not rebound until well after World War II. In the postwar years, it rebranded itself to compete in a more integrated European and international marketplace with the creation of a new wine identity. As European integration continued, Spanish wine producers and the tourism industry worked together to promote the uniqueness of Spain and the quality of its wines. Karl J. Trybus explores the development of Spanish wine in the context of national and global events, tracing how the wine industry has fared and ultimately prospered despite civil war, regional concerns, foreign problems, and changing tastes.

Book excerpt: Sunset in a Glass: Adventures of a Food and Wine Road Warrior Volume I (of IV) is a collection of non-fiction stories about the adventures of recognized Spanish food, wine and travel authority Gerry Dawes, recipient of the prestigious Spanish National Gastronomy Prize. Sunset in a Glass is illustrated with more than 150 color and black-and-white photographs chronicling adventures from decades of living and traveling in Spain. Foreword by José Andrés. This book is perfect for armchair travelers deprived of their ability to travel because of the COVID pandemic and those undergoing Spain withdrawal. Sunset in a Glass is a great holiday gift for those who love travel, adventure, Spain and Spanish food and wine. The stories in this Sunset in a Glass are from decades of crisscrossing Spain accumulating adventures with the likes of José Andrés, Anthony Bourdain, James Earl Jones, Kenneth Tynan, Keith Hernandez, Thomas Keller, Ferran Adria, top chefs and restaurateurs, star winemakers and down home artisan wine producers, professional Ibérico ham carvers, bullfighters, flamenco artists, friends of Ernest Hemingway and a marvelous collection of women in Spain. "Gerry Dawes, the unbridled Spanish food and wine enthusiast cum expert whose writing, photography, and countless crisscrossings of the peninsula have done the most to introduce Americans--and especially American food professionals--to my country''s culinary life. He has connected with all manner of people working at every level and in every corner of Spain. You can step into a restaurant in the smallest town in Spain, and it turns out they know Gerry somehow."--José Andrés, chef-restaurateur-humanitarian, Nobel Prize nominee. "In his decades of wandering the back roads of Spain Gerry Dawes has built up a much stronger bank of experiences than I had to rely on when I started writing Iberia...His adventures far exceeded mine in both width and depth."--James A. Michener, author of Iberia: Spanish Travels and Reflections. Before the golden age of food travel media, and long before Spain became the world''s most exciting food destination, there was Gerry Dawes. A walking (and eating) encyclopedia of Spanish food and culture--from tapas to the culinary innovators, from artisan winemakers and cheesemakers to the sites only the locals know--Gerry has chronicled them all. Like few others, he continues to inspire and inform a generation of food writers, travelers and chefs like me."--Dan Barber, Chef-owner, Blue Hill New York and Blue Hill at Stone Barns, author of The Third Plate: Field Notes on the Future of Food. "Thanks for your artistry. If I had not seen your photography, I would not have known you as well." --James Earl Jones, during The Great White Hope filming in Barcelona. "Gerry Dawes has lived, analysed, argued, savoured, prodded, tested, teased and loved his way through Spain''s extraordinary gastronomic heritage for decades. Food as friendship is at the core of this wild, passionate road trip through Spain. This is a masterclass in storytelling - delicious and addictive."--Gijs van Hensbergen, Guernica: The Biography of a Twentieth-Century Icon and Gaudí: A Biography. "Prowling through the bodegas, tapas bars, and markets of Spain with Gerry Dawes is an educational experience, sure, but more than that it''s an inside look at one of the world''s great gastronomic cultures, and more than that, it''s just a whole lot of fun. Gerry knows almost anyone you''d want to know in this delicious world, and those he doesn''t know, once he meets them, aren''t strangers for long. Sunset in a Glass will give you a tantalizing taste of the experience."--Colman Andrews, author of Catalan Cuisine, co-founder of Saveur. "Spain wouldn''t be as known to Americans without the stories Gerry tells and writes."--Chef Ferran Adrià, elBulli.

Book Synopsis The SAGE Encyclopedia of Alcohol by : Scott C. Martin
Download or read book The SAGE Encyclopedia of Alcohol written by Scott C. Martin and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 2823 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol consumption goes to the very roots of nearly all human societies. Different countries and regions have become associated with different sorts of alcohol, for instance, the “beer culture” of Germany, the “wine culture” of France, Japan and saki, Russia and vodka, the Caribbean and rum, or the “moonshine culture” of Appalachia. Wine is used in religious rituals, and toasts are used to seal business deals or to celebrate marriages and state dinners. However, our relation with alcohol is one of love/hate. We also regulate it and tax it, we pass laws about when and where it’s appropriate, we crack down severely on drunk driving, and the United States and other countries tried the failed “Noble Experiment” of Prohibition. While there are many encyclopedias on alcohol, nearly all approach it as a substance of abuse, taking a clinical, medical perspective (alcohol, alcoholism, and treatment). The SAGE Encyclopedia of Alcohol examines the history of alcohol worldwide and goes beyond the historical lens to examine alcohol as a cultural and social phenomenon, as well—both for good and for ill—from the earliest days of humankind.
