Book excerpt: Travels in Beloochistan and Sinde is a first-hand account of a journey taken in 1810-11 through parts of present-day India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq. The author, Henry Pottinger (1789-1856), was a lieutenant in the East India Company who, along with a friend and fellow officer, Captain Charles Christie, volunteered to undertake a mission to the region between India and Persia (present-day Iran), about which the East India Company at that time had little knowledge. The two men journeyed from Bombay (present-day Mumbai) to Sind (present-day southeast Pakistan) from where, disguised as Indians, they traveled overland to Kalat. They were quickly recognized as Europeans, but they were able to continue their journey to Nushki, near the present-day border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. There the men separated. Pottinger continued westward to Persia, through Kerman to Shiraz and Isfahan. Christie traveled north from Nushki into Afghanistan, through Helmand to Herat and from there into Persia to Yazd and Isfahan, where he rejoined Pottinger. Christie was directed to remain in Persia, where in 1812 he was killed in a Russian attack. Pottinger returned to Bombay via Baghdad and Basra. The book is in two parts. The first is a detailed account of Pottinger's journey, with observations on climate, terrain, soil, plants and animals, peoples and tribes, customs, religion, and popular beliefs. The second is an introduction to the history and geography of the provinces of Baluchistan and Sind. An appendix reproduces part of the journal kept by Christie on his travels through Afghanistan. The book contains one colored illustration at the front and a large fold-out map after the end of the text. Pottinger went on to have a distinguished career with the East India Company and the British government. In April 1843 he was appointed the first British governor of Hong Kong.

Book excerpt: "Why the hell would anyone think of travelling to a war-torn country full of Islamic extremism, suicide bombings and generally people just wanting to kill you, right? That's what you're thinking? If you've decided to read this book it's either that your just curious or that your actually planning to visit Pakistan and don't know what to expect. As you have researched on Google and opened lonely planet you found written in italics it said "Pakistan is the difficult child of South Asia - blessed with abundant natural and historical riches, but plagued by political instability, which has kept the country off the radar for all but the most hardened explorers" and you thought twice about whether you should be visiting or not. This is exactly what happened to me, I just didn't know what to expect.Me being a "hardened explorer" asked myself, is it really so unstable that only the more adventurous of us can go? Or is it just the perception of a few western media outlets who try to portray Pakistan as a no-go country. I wanted to find out for myself........."This book reflects the authors' personal experiences and accounts while travelling to Pakistan. This book is the first part in the series of 'A hardened explores guide to Pakistan'.This book consists of two writing styles; writing in italics indicates the author's personal memoir whilst normal font describes places factually. This book consists of real-life experiences and the author has tried to keep the book neutral and free from all biased. This part is a travel guide/memoir of the province of Sindh, Pakistan. this includes Karachi, Sehwan/the tomb of laal shahbaz qalandar, Kot diji, Sukkur and mohenjo daro.

Book excerpt: Pakistan Travel Guide. Tourism. From the ancient Mughal city of Lahore to the snow-capped peaks of the Karakoram Mountains, Pakistan is a diverse nation defined not just by its natural beauty and architectural splendours, but by its friendly inhabitants, varied wildlife and rich culinary traditions. Shame then, that political instability and sectarian violence has made large parts of the country a no-go for tourists, and prevented Pakistan from realising its potential as a top travel destination. However, those daring enough to take a punt on Pakistan will be richly rewarded for their endeavours particularly those with a penchant for the great outdoors. The North-West Frontier Province and Gilgit-Baltistan region are home to some of the world's most famous mountain ranges, including Himalaya, Karakoram and Hindu Kush. That explorers will have these sights more or less to themselves is another boon; gone are the well-marked routes and tea houses of India and Nepal, here lies real adventure. From jaw-dropping mountain scenery to bustling conurbations, Pakistan's vibrant cities each have their own distinct flavour. The super-sleek capital, Islamabad, is a modern metropolis bristling with contemporary architecture, world-class cultural attractions and some of the country's finest restaurants. Lahore is the very antithesis to Islamabad. Pakistan's cultural capital, this ancient city abounds with UNESCO listed attractions, stunning shrines and ornate Mughal architecture. Its old town is a maze of bustling bazaars, which harbour mosques, museums and manicured gardens. Karachi, the former capital and the economic powerhouse of the country, is a mega-city in every sense of the word, cramming 15 million or so into its boundaries. Meanwhile, Peshawar, in the North-West Frontier Province, remains a frontier town, sometimes dangerous and always intriguing. Those seeking sun and seclusion, should explore Pakistan's glorious coastline, which is home to some of the most pristine, crowd-free beaches in South Asia. While those looking to evoke the spirit a Kipling-style adventure should follow the ancient trade routes of the Khyber Pass, Grand Trunk Road and Karakoram Highway. All of this and more lies in Pakistan, and all remains accessible to the more adventurous tourist.

Book excerpt: Long popular with a general readership, travel writing has, in the past three decades or so, become firmly established as an object of serious and multi-disciplinary academic inquiry. Few of the scholarly and popular publications that have focused on the nineteenth century have regarded the century as a whole. This broad volume examines the cultural and social aspects of travel writing on Africa, Asia, America, the Balkans and Australasia.
