So Monadnock came to mean everything that was helpful, healing, and full of quiet, and when I saw him half across New Hampshire he did not fail. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Gate and Back: Travel Letters Grand Canyon, Arizona, May 9, 1913. - Shortly after Mrs. Smith and I returned from the Pacific coast two years ago, I met an acquaintance who greeted me by saying, Well, I read your pieces in the paper. A good many times the Agitator has opened its gracious columns to me, and numerous friends have been kind enough to say nice things re garding my letters of travel. It is doubtless true that many people, whether they themselves have trav cled or mostly stop at home, enjoy -descriptions of faraway scene-s, and of lands that differ from their own. I like to feel that not only my friends but also others whom I have never met, do me the honor to read what I find pleasure in writing. And so I am going to talk to you all again through the paper, and I begin with this toast. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel Letters From New Zealand, Australia and Africa Saturday, january 4, 1913. - This is written in the Pacific ocean, on the ship Sonoma, two days out of Sydney, Australia, where we expect to land next Mon day. We have been on the ship seventeen days, and the passengers and servants seem as familiar as people with whom we have associated many years. In the main, we have had a pleasant voyage, although the weather was somewhat boisterous the first few days out of San Francisco. We stopped eight hours at Honolulu, and five hours at Pago Pago, in the Samoa Islands. There was an elaborate celebration on board on Christ mas day, which included a big dinner, speeches, and a dance, and we also had a similar New Year celebration, although we actually had no New Year's day. At a late hour on the 3lst of December we crossed the l80th meridian, and, when we awoke the following morning, the date was January 2, 1913. Ships sailing westward drop a day on crossing the 180th meridian, and ships going eastward add a day. In traveling toward the sun, the day increases in length, and, in a trip around the world, this increase amounts to exactly twenty four hours. Every day we set our watches back from twenty to thirty minutes, and when we reach Canton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Characteristic differences soon appear, not in the country, as I have said, but in the prevalence of the Italian language in the notices on the walls and the names of the shops. The French authorities are doing all they can to banish the Italian from the annexed provinces. They will allow the celperz'ezcm, for instance, a license to sell Protestant bibles in French, but not in Italian.
