Many countries see it as a passport to their economic development; others express concern that uncontrolled tourism may overwhelm their natural, cultural, social, and physical resources. The question of how best to harness tourism for the good of host communities is increasingly debated and forms the basis of this book. Written in a highly accessible style for a general audience as well as professionals, it applies an economic way of thinking to tourism to help readers gain a better understanding of this dynamic and fascinating global industry.

Book excerpt: "Oceania: A Tourism Handbook draws together a wide range of sources to provide a comprehensive handbook of tourism in the Oceania region. As tourism continues to grow in importance and significance for the countries of Oceania, it is important to have a single source of information and reference for tourism. At the same time, it is vital to provide a disciplined analysis of tourism by standardising terminologies and delivering a consistency of approach for all the countries in the region." "The handbook provides an anatomy of tourism in the region by taking a detailed look at each of the three key constituents of Oceania - Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. For each of these regions, tourism demand, supply and organisation have been analysed, as well as a chapter to guide the reader through the tourism statistics sources that are available. The final section of the handbook takes a thematic approach with chapters examining key issues of tourism in the region, including investment, air transport, risk management, land ownership, climate change and tourism education."--BOOK JACKET.

The development of tourism and tourism public policy, and the strategic management of failure of tourism to realize its commercial potential are all considered in this book. The particular salience of this research lies in the fact that it has been conducted during an interesting (politically) and volatile (globally) period for the world's tourism industry. Increasing competition, economic, and environmental issues combined with the continued threat of terrorism, and instability in the Middle East, necessitated governments assessing and redefining their tourism public policies. How they approached this in the late nineties and new Millennium is reflected in the first part of the book. The second part focuses on Scotland whose tourism public policy issues in the late nineties were focused, concentrated, and mutated by globalization, political devolution, and the restoration of the Scottish Parliament in 1999. In consequence tourism and economic development powers were devolved to Edinburgh from Westminster. However, other powers such as fiscal and employment policies which impacted greatly on tourism were reserved to Westminster, a complex situation which the book has also set out to explain, as it does the Scottish Parliament's inability to influence such powers. During the lifetime of the first parliament in almost three hundred years, Scottish tourism was confronted by significant challenges e.g., the foot and mouth epidemic, the terrorist atrocities in the USA, Indonesia, and Kenya, the combination of which for a short but crucial period virtually decimated North American tourism trade to Europe, and of course recession.

Book excerpt: The theory of networks aims at developing theoretical views on the design and management of alliances, franchise chains, licensing, joint ventures, cooperatives, and venture capital relations. The current trend in economics and management of networks is twofold: First there is a strong tendency toward application of theoretical approaches developed both in organizational economics, strategic management and organization theory. The second trend refers to the development of more integrative views on networks. Especially, combining organizational economics, strategic management and relational views on networks are very promising research directions. Starting from this status of research, the current book emphasizes network research as a theory-driven field by offering new perspectives on contract design, decision and ownership rights, value creation, knowledge management and the role of social capital in franchising networks, alliances and cooperatives.
