Book Synopsis Protozoology by : Karl Gottlieb Grell
Download or read book Protozoology written by Karl Gottlieb Grell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I prepared the first German edition of this book in 1955, it was my intention to acquaint biologists in my country with the new and exciting results being obtained on the other side of theAtlantic Ocean (incl. the English Channel). In the meantime, especially after publication of the second German edition in 1968, Dr. Konrad F. Springer and many colleagues, too, suggested that I should prepare an English version. Though this was the exact opposite of my original intention, I finally agreed despite the risks involved. Since 1968 our knowledge in Protozoology increased considerably. Though I tried to concentrate the text as much as possible, an enlargement of up to pages 554 was unavoidable. Many figures have been changed, replaced and added. Altogether their number increased from 422 to 437. In my opinion, it is only a matter of time before the "true" protozoologists dis appear. There will be cell biologists, biochemists, geneticists and others working with certain Protozoa, but very few who are interested in the group as a whole, their morphological and physiological diversity, their various types of reproduction and their relationships to other groups of organisms. Even at the present time, the Society of Protozoologists, comprising more than thousand members, consists for the most part of specialists who concentrate their efforts specifically upon Chlamy domonas, Amoeba, Plasmodium, Tetrahymena or some other protozoans.

Book excerpt: A selection of papers presented at the 13th International Conference of the International Bryozoology Association held in Concepción Chile in January 2004 and hosted by the Universidad de Concepción and Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción. The topics presented in this volume reflect the diversity of studies on bryozoa with authors from 18 countries. They include investigations in seven thematic areas: ecology and life strategies; recent and fossil faunas of Australia and New Zealand; past and present bryozoans from both Antarctic and Arctic seas; geology and palaeontology of bryozoans from Eurasia and North America; fresh water bryozoans around the world; fossil bryozoans of the Mediterranean and Tethyan realms and evolution and diversity of recent species. This volume represents the newest advances made in bryozoological studies during the last three years, and makes a significant contribution to the literature.

Book Synopsis Post-Embryonic Development of the Copepoda by : Ferrari
Download or read book Post-Embryonic Development of the Copepoda written by Ferrari and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-07-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crustaceans that are now called copepods have been known, not necessarily by that name, since Aristotle. Published reports of their post-embryonic development, however, date only from the last 250 years. This monograph is a first attempt to gather all published information about copepod post-embryonic development. Careful diagnoses of nauplius and copepodid allow comparisons of specific developmental stages among species. Changes from the last naupliar stage to the first copepodid stage are used to interpret the naupliar body. Body and limb patterning are discussed, and models of limb patterning are used to generate segment homologies for the protopod and both rami. Contributions of post-embryonic development to phylogenetic hypotheses are considered and suggestions for future studies are provided.

Book Synopsis The Families and Genera of Marine Gammaridean Amphipoda (except Marine Gammaroids) by : Jerry Laurens Barnard
Download or read book The Families and Genera of Marine Gammaridean Amphipoda (except Marine Gammaroids) written by Jerry Laurens Barnard and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a handbook for the identification of gammaridean amphipods to generic level through the use of artificial (non-phylogenetic) keys at the family-group level which lead to subsidiary keys to the genera of families or family groups. Genera in polytypic families are diagnosed and described sufficiently to fit the taxonomic complications within each group.
Book Synopsis Monograph of the Gonostomatidae and Kahliellidae (Ciliophora, Hypotricha) by : Helmut Berger
Download or read book Monograph of the Gonostomatidae and Kahliellidae (Ciliophora, Hypotricha) written by Helmut Berger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present monograph is the fourth of six volumes which review the Hypotricha, a major group of the spirotrichs. The book is about the Gonostomatidae, the Kahliellidae, and some taxa of unknown position in the hypotrichs. Gonostomum was previously misclassified in the Oxytrichidae because its type species Gonostomum affine has basically an 18-cirri pattern, which is dominant in the oxytrichids. A new hypothesis, considering also molecular data, postulates that this 18-cirri pattern evolved in the last common ancestor of the hypotrichs and therefore it appears throughout the Hypotricha tree. The simple dorsal kinety pattern, composed of only three bipolar dorsal kineties, and gene sequence analyses strongly suggest that Gonostomum branches off rather early in the phylogenetic tree. Thus, the Gonostomatidae, previously synonymised with the oxytrichids, are reactivated to include the name-bearing type genus and other genera (e.g., Paragonostomum, Wallackia, Cladotricha) which have the characteristic gonostomatid oral apparatus. The Kahliellidae are a rather vague group mainly defined via the preservation of parts of the parental infraciliature. The kahliellids preliminary comprise, besides the name-bearing type genus Kahliella, genera such as Parakahliella and its African pendant Afrokahliella or the monotypic Engelmanniella. In total 68 species distributed in 21 genera and subgenera are revised. As in the previous volumes almost all morphological, morphogenetic, molecular, faunistic, and ecological data, scattered in almost 700 papers, are compiled so that the four volumes (Oxytrichidae, Urostyloidea, Amphisiellidae and Trachelostylidae, Gonostomatidae and Kahliellida) provide a detailed insight into the biology of almost 500 species of hypotrichs. The series is an up-to-date overview about this highly interesting taxon of spirotrichous ciliates mainly addressed to taxonomists, cell biologists, ecologists, molecular biologists, and practitioners.
