This book was released on 2012-02-10 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2012-06-04 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

It aims to enable age-appropriate diagnosis and optimal treatment selection, with particular consideration of the current developmental age of an injured child. A general overview section presents the features of skeletal growth, growth plate fusion, and the concept of non-growth-damaging treatment of pediatric fractures. The well-structured specialized chapters detail the characteristics of individual injuries with corresponding case studies. Thus, the book offers a learning opportunity but can also be used as a practical daily reference to facilitate orientation. Three chapters focus on options for the correction of injuries that have healed poorly. The book offers exceptional value through:- Classifications of fractures and injuries Schematic drawings of typical fractures with developmental characteristics Structured overview tables for all regions of injury with representation of the fracture types and their characteristic radiographs Presentation of conservative and operative treatment options and illustration of all typical situations

Book excerpt: Experiences of violence, sexual abuse, accidents, disasters or deaths of close relatives or friends, and other extreme situations can lead to trauma-related disorders. Since 2018, the World Health Organization has distinguished four such disorders in its classification list: "classic" and complex post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as prolonged grief disorder and adjustment disorder. These long-term effects are described in detail in the book. In recent years, a variety of interventions have been developed to effectively treat these disorders. This 5th edition has been largely reorganized due to the groundbreaking innovations in which the editor played a decisive role on an international level. Among the innovations are the chapters on: - Complex post-traumatic stress disorder - Childhood violence and its consequences - Low-threshold and innovative interventions - Methods of cognitive behavioral therapy - Psychodynamic approaches The handbook on psychological trauma-related disorders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remains of past people are a testament to their lived experiences and of the environment in which they lived. Synthesising the latest research, this book critically examines the sources of evidence used to understand and interpret violence in bioarchaeology, exploring the significant light such evidence can shed on past hierarchies, gender roles and life courses. The text draws on a diverse range of social and clinical science research to investigate violence and trauma in the archaeological record, focussing on human remains. It examines injury patterns in different groups as well as the biological, psychological and cultural factors that make us behave violently, how our living environment influences injury and violence, the models used to identify and interpret violence in the past, and how violence is used as a social tool. Drawing on a range of case studies, Redfern explores new research directions that will contribute to nuanced interpretations of past lives.

Book excerpt: It is estimated that the functionally significant body of knowledge for a given medical specialty changes radically every 8 years. New specialties and "sub-specialization" are occurring at approximately an equal rate. Historically, established journals have not been able either to absorb this increase in publishable material or to extend their readership to the new specialists. International and national meetings, symposia and seminars, workshops and newsletters, successfully bring to the attention of physi cians within developing specialties what is occurring, but generally only in demonstration form without providing historical perspective, patho anatomical correlates, or extensive discussion. Page and time limitations oblige the authors to present only the essence of their material. Pediatric neurosurgery is an example of a specialty that has developed during the past 15 years and over this period, neurosurgeons have ob tained special training in pediatric neurosurgery and then dedicated them selves primarily to its practice. Centers, Chairs, and educational pro grams have been established as groups of neurosurgeons in different countries throughout the world organized themselves respectively into national and international societies for pediatric neurosurgery. These events were both preceded and followed by specialized courses, national and international journals, and ever-increasing clinical and investigative studies into all aspects of surgically treatable diseases of the child's ner vous system.

Book excerpt: It is vital to have knowledge of the neuroanatomical structures and functional neurological mechanisms, which are disrupted in neurogenic speech/language, disordered persons in order to understand the speech/language deficits themselves. This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the neurological basis of both the clinically recognised forms of aphasia and the various motor speech disorders, in both children and adults. It also covers more recently recognised language disorders, such as Parkinsons and related diseases, right hemisphere damage, closed-head injury, dementia, etc. This is a perfect text for practitioners who need to understand the integration of neuroanatomy and functional neurology with the practice of speech-language pathology.

Yet it is only with an awareness of these borders, an acknowledgement and respect of them, that it will be possible to proceed towards integrating differences, where this makes sense and appears necessary.

This book was released on 2003-12-31 with total page 1246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international manual is like a world cruise: a once-in-a-lifetime experience. All the more reason to consider carefully whether it is necessary. This can hardly be the case if previous research in the selected field has already been the subject of an earlier review-or even several competing surveys. On the other hand, more thorough study is necessary if the intensity and scope of research are increasing without comprehensive assessments. That was the situation in Western societies when work began on this project in the summer of 1998. It was then, too, that the challenges emerged: any manual, espe cially an international one, is a very special type of text, which is anything but routine. It calls for a special effort: the "state of the art" has to be documented for selected subject areas, and its presentation made as compelling as possible. The editors were delighted, therefore, by the cooperation and commitment shown by the eighty-one contributors from ten countries who were recruited to write on the sixty-two different topics, by the con structive way in which any requests for changes were dealt with, and by the patient re sponse to our many queries. This volume is the result of a long process. It began with the first drafts outlining the structure of the work, which were submitted to various distinguished colleagues. Friedheim Neidhardt of Berlin, Gertrud Nunner-Winkler of Munich, and Roland Eckert of Trier, to name only a few, supplied valuable comments at this stage.
