Resource management, efficient utilization of the water resources, and above all water purification are all alternatives to resolve the water crisis. Purification approaches include traditional approaches that have lasted for several centuries without major modifications as well as new innovative approaches. This book covers a number of water quality issues relevant to either improving the existing treatment methods or to new advanced approaches. The book has 15 chapters distributed over four sections titled: [1] Management and Modeling of Treatment Systems, [2] Advanced Treatment Processes, [3] Treatment of Organic-contaminated Water, and [4] Advanced Monitoring Techniques.

Download or read book Water Resources in Mexico written by Úrsula Oswald Spring and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water resources in Mexico are threatened by scarcity, pollution and climate change. In two decades water consumption doubled, producing water stress in dry seasons and semi-arid and arid regions. Water stress rises due to physical and economic stress. In seven parts a multidisciplinary team analyzes hydrological processes in basins and their interaction with climate, soil and biota. Competing water use in agriculture, industry and domestic needs require savings, decontamination processes and desalination to satisfy the growing demand. Water quality affects health and ecosystems. This creates conflicts and cooperation that may be enhanced by public policy, institution building and social organization.

Book Synopsis RECHARGEABLE SUSTAINABILITY THE KEY IS THE STORAGE by : Enrique Fernández Escalante / Jon San Sebastián Sauto
Download or read book RECHARGEABLE SUSTAINABILITY THE KEY IS THE STORAGE written by Enrique Fernández Escalante / Jon San Sebastián Sauto and published by Enrique Fernández Escalante. This book was released on 2012-05-03 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 2007 and mid-2011, the Tragsa Group has financed the project of R&D DINA-MAR, "Management of Aquifer Recharge within the framework of sustainable development". The project has been centered on studies related to aquifer management from different perspectives and on its potential for consolidation as an effective water management technique. In October 2010 the Group published a book compiling the major contributions of the research team, entitled: "DINA-MAR," "Management of aquifer artificial recharge in the context of sustainable development: Technological stage", with 496 pages written in Spanish. The book collected visions and results of technicians from more than eight different disciplines. However, some aspects were not included, such as those contributions and conclusions reached in the periodic coordination meetings, formal and informal, and from both Workshops and open debates held in the course of the project. In order to unify emanating contributions from different actors over four years’ time, the final synthesis book was written with the aim of providing additional and complementary information to the above-mentioned publication. It was translated in English to make it accessible to a larger scientific community. The text has four sections: 1) a summary of the Workshop held on June 30, 2008, 2) a summary and conclusions of the final publication, 3) a summary of the closing workshop held 25 May 2011 and 4) general project conclusions. As it is a continuous learning process, the publication lacks the usual conclusions section, provided that it occupies the entire book, as well as the bibliography, which provide only two reviews, having a broad development in the book which complements. We hope that this is of interest and accomplishes the Mission for which has been carried out, dissemination, technology transfer and a study of pros and cons of a water management technique that is becoming more common. -Demonstration sites as it is the case of the hydrogeological routes “Caminitos de Agua” (little paths of water), implemented during the development of the project, represent an important line of action in terms of dissemination and environmental education. This example, currently being applied in Spain, should be implemented in other places of interest.

Book Synopsis Safe Use of Wastewater in Agriculture by : Hiroshan Hettiarachchi
Download or read book Safe Use of Wastewater in Agriculture written by Hiroshan Hettiarachchi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a broad and global level description of the current status of wastewater use in agriculture and then brings the readers to various places in the MENA Region and Europe to explain how some countries and regions have addressed the challenges during implementation. On a global scale, over 20 million hectares of agricultural land are irrigated using wastewater. This is one good, and perhaps the most prominent, example of the safe use potential of wastewater. Water scarcity and the cost of energy and fertilisers are among the main factors driving millions of farmers and other entrepreneurs to make use of wastewater. In order to address the technical, institutional, and policy challenges of safe water reuse, developing countries and countries in transition need clear institutional arrangements and more skilled human resources, with a sound understanding of the opportunities and potential risks of wastewater use. Stakeholders in wastewater irrigation who need to implement from scratch or improve current conditions, find it difficult to gather the necessary information on practical implementation aspects. The main objective of this book is to bridge that gap.
Book Synopsis Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control for the Municipal Water Cycle in a River Basin Context by : Alberto Galvis-Castaño
Download or read book Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control for the Municipal Water Cycle in a River Basin Context written by Alberto Galvis-Castaño and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-14 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protection of water resources from deterioration in quality by pollution discharges is probably the biggest challenge in sustainable water resources management in the recent decades. In practice, most countries have adopted pollution control strategies and measures which are based on ‘end-of-pipe’ solutions: wastewater treatment plants and adjustments to the regulations, including taxes for wastewater discharges (Conventional Strategy). Although this approach involves very high costs, on many occasions, this strategy has been a complete failure. The research described in this book contribute to the development of sustainable solutions for the previously outlined problem. It was based on the validation of the Three-Step Strategic Approach concept (3-SSA), which includes: 1) prevention or minimisation of waste production; 2) treatment aimed at recovery and reuse of waste components, and 3) disposal of remaining waste with stimulation of natural self-purification of the receiving water body. The study showed overall positive effects of the 3-SSA, in comparison of Conventional Strategy, on wastewater management in the Upper Basin (389 km) of the Cauca river, the second most important river in Colombia. The Cost Benefit Analysis clearly favoured the 3-SSA, generating a major impact on the river water quality at lower cost compared to the Conventional Strategy.

Book Synopsis Biological Wastewater Treatment by : Mogens Henze
Download or read book Biological Wastewater Treatment written by Mogens Henze and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 1881 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For information on the online course in Biological Wastewater Treatment from UNESCO-IHE, visit: http://www.iwapublishing.co.uk/books/biological-wastewater-treatment-online-course-principles-modeling-and-design Over the past twenty years, the knowledge and understanding of wastewater treatment have advanced extensively and moved away from empirically-based approaches to a first principles approach embracing chemistry, microbiology, physical and bioprocess engineering, and mathematics. Many of these advances have matured to the degree that they have been codified into mathematical models for simulation with computers. For a new generation of young scientists and engineers entering the wastewater treatment profession, the quantity, complexity and diversity of these new developments can be overwhelming, particularly in developing countries where access is not readily available to advanced level tertiary education courses in wastewater treatment. Biological Wastewater Treatment addresses this deficiency. It assembles and integrates the postgraduate course material of a dozen or so professors from research groups around the world that have made significant contributions to the advances in wastewater treatment. The book forms part of an internet-based curriculum in biological wastewater treatment which also includes: Summarized lecture handouts of the topics covered in book Filmed lectures by the author professors Tutorial exercises for students self-learning Upon completion of this curriculum the modern approach of modelling and simulation to wastewater treatment plant design and operation, be it activated sludge, biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal, secondary settling tanks or biofilm systems, can be embraced with deeper insight, advanced knowledge and greater confidence.
