Book Synopsis A Transportation Research Program for Mitigating and Adapting to Climate Change and Conserving Energy by : Transportation Research Board
Download or read book A Transportation Research Program for Mitigating and Adapting to Climate Change and Conserving Energy written by Transportation Research Board and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-01-14 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In reviewing proposals for transportation research programs as part of reauthorizing the federal surface transportation program, the Transportation Research Board recognized a gap: no proposals explicitly addressed research to mitigate GHG emissions and energy consumption attributable to passenger and freight travel or to adapt to climate change. A Transportation Research Program for Mitigating and Adapting to Climate Change and Conserving Energy is the product of a study to suggest research programs to fill this and other perceived gaps. Specifically, this book identifies research needs with regard to policies and strategies relating to the use of the transportation system and to assist infrastructure owners in adapting to climate change; focuses on research programs that could provide guidance to officials at all levels responsible for policies that affect the use of surface transportation infrastructure and its operation, maintenance, and construction; and aims to help officials begin to adapt the infrastructure to climate changes that are already occurring or that are expected to occur in the next several decades.

Book excerpt: TRB Special Report 268 - Surface Transportation Environmental Research: A Long-Term Strategy defines a broad and ambitious research program to address and inform major public policy debates about the effects of surface transportation facilities and operations on the human and natural environments. The committee that conducted the study identified major gaps in knowledge that could be filled through a cooperative program of research involving federal agencies, states, and environmental organizations. The committee recommended creation of a new cooperative research program to carry out its recommended research agenda. Special Report 268 Summary
Book Synopsis Sustainable Transportation in Natural and Protected Areas by : Francesco Orsi
Download or read book Sustainable Transportation in Natural and Protected Areas written by Francesco Orsi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protected areas are at the centre of nature-based tourism, which is increasingly popular across the world. As visitor numbers increase, so does awareness of the harmful effects that large crowds may have on both natural resources and individuals’ recreational experience. This volume considers the challenge of transportation to and within natural and protected areas, the improvement of which has already been recognised as having great potential for mitigating the environmental impacts of ecotourism. While several books have focused considerable attention to the management of protected areas in general, little has been said about the specific issue of sustainable transport, an emerging trend that is already reshaping visitation patterns in natural settings. This book provides current knowledge on issues associated with the transportation of visitors in natural and protected areas, and a comprehensive overview of the technical and strategic options available to tackle these issues. It approaches the subject via three main topics: preferences, or the visitors' attitudes towards transportation; practices, where current approaches are assessed through examples and case-studies of successful experiences and methodologies from around the world; and policies, where suggestions and recommendations are put forward for both local scale strategies and broad-scale regulatory action with global relevance. Contributors include academics in the field of natural resource management and tourism, with extensive experience in protected area management and active partnerships with natural park administrations.
Book Synopsis Saving Energy in U.S. Transportation by :
Download or read book Saving Energy in U.S. Transportation written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses an array of transportation policies designed to reduce energy use and describes the intersection of these policies with general transportation problems such as congestion and air pollution. The report: describes the U.S. transportation system and its energy use; presents and evaluates forecasts of energy use to 2010; compares and contrasts U.S. and European travel and energy use patterns; discusses reasons governments may choose to intervene in transportation markets; and describes and evaluates a range of policy options to reduce U.S. transport energy use, from gasoline taxes to urban planning. Its objective is to provide a balanced, qualitative perspective of issues and problems rather than a highly quantified analysis.
Book Synopsis Bibliography for Transportation Energy Conservation. [578 Citations]. by :
Download or read book Bibliography for Transportation Energy Conservation. [578 Citations]. written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A listing is given of 578 reports, books, articles, and conference papers on transportation and energy. Coverage is primarily on U.S. developments and research from 1970 to 1975. Following a section of citations of general works on energy, the bibliography contains two main parts: ''Energy for Transportation'' and ''Transportation of Energy.'' Within each of these topics the arrangement is multimodal (at the urban, regional, national, or international level), then by mode. Selected information sources are listed in the last part. Within each section, entries are arranged alphabetically by author or, lacking an author, by title. References were drawn from the Transportation Center Library collection and other libraries in the Northwestern University system. An earlier bibliography, Transportation and Energy, compiled by the Transportation Center Library in March 1974, forms the basis for the arrangement and provides coverage from 1970 to 1973.
