Book excerpt: "The book has two aims. First, it demonstrates the common ground between the fast-growing fields of environmental history and mobility studies in terms of subject matter, theoretical approaches, and methodology. Second, it shows how mobility--the movements of people, things, and ideas, as well as their associated cultural meanings--has been a key factor in shaping Canadians' perceptions of and interactions with their country. Approaching the burgeoning field of environmental history in Canada through the lens of mobility reveals some of the distinctive ways in which Canadians have come to terms with the country's climate and landscape. The collection seeks to accomplish these aims with a broad scope: a series of case studies that span Canada's diverse regions, from the closing of the age of sail in the late nineteenth century to post-World War II automobile culture. Chapters examine a wide range of topics, from the impact of seasonal climactic conditions on different transportation modes, to the environmental consequences of building mobility corridors and pathways, and the relationship between changing forms of mobility with tourism and other recreational activities. The contributors employ a number of methodologies, including the use of traditional archival sources (correspondence, government reports, business ledgers, publicity materials) as well as historical geographic information systems (HGIS), qualitative and quantitative analysis, and critical theory."--

Book excerpt: This report presents a review of the domestic and international literature on sustainable transportation, and combines this with the results of interviews on sustainable transportation with key governmental and non-governmental organizations. The first chapter summarizes some of the trends that have led researchers and other commentators to conclude that transportation has become unsustainable. it reviews the most serious impacts of unsustainable trends in transportation, including health impacts and global climate change, and also addresses the relative contribution of different modes to the unsustainability of transportation in Canada. Chapter 2 outlines elements of analysis as well as policy and program development, describing broad tools that have been used or considered in policy development for sustainable transportation. Chapter 3 summarizes specific policy options that have been studied and/or implemented in Canada and internationally, and describes associated jurisdictional and timing issues.

The 1996 report included a section entitled "The Challenge of Sustainable Transportation" and noted that the most significant challenge confronting Canadians may be that of making personal transportation more sustainable. The purpose of this monograph is to alert the United Nations General Assembly to the importance of developing a shared vision of sustainable transportation and to start building consensus on the broad direction to take.

Book excerpt: For readers who intend to read this volume without reading the first, some in troductory remarks are in orde{about the scope of the work and the strategy used in all five volumes to measure the quality of life. In the first chapter of Volume I, I reviewed the relevant recent literature on social indicators and so cial reporting, and explained all the general difficulties involved in such work. It would be redundant to repeat that discussion here, but there are some fundamental points that are worth mentioning. Readers who fmd this account too brief should consult the longer discussion. The basic question that will be answered in this work is this: Is there a difference in the quality of life in Canada and the United States of America, and if so, in which country is it better? Alternatively, one could put the question thus: If one individual were randomly selected out of Canada and another out of the United States, would there be important qualitative differences, and if so, which one would probably be better off! To simplify matters, I often use the terms 'Canadian' and 'American' as abbreviations for 'a randomly selected resident' of Canada or the United States, respec tively.

It begins with a set of sustainable development principles that define how the department interprets the concept of sustainable development in relation to the transportation sector. Key issues in transportation are identified, and seven strategic challenges are set out, along with corresponding actions, in the following areas: improving education & awareness of sustainable transportation; developing better decision tools; promoting adoption of sustainable transportation technology; improving environmental management for departmental operations & lands; reducing air & water pollution; and promoting efficient transportation. Appendices include environmental management system targets for 2001-03, definitions of sustainable transportation, results of the department's sustainable development strategy review, and a glossary.

Book excerpt: Mobility - the movements of people, things, and ideas, as well as their associated cultural meanings - has been a key factor in shaping Canadians' perceptions of and interactions with their country. Approaching the burgeoning field of environmental history in Canada through the lens of mobility reveals some of the distinctive ways in which Canadians have come to terms with the country's climate and landscape. Spanning Canada's diverse regions, throughout its history, from the closing of the age of sail to the contemporary era of just-on-time delivery, Moving Natures: Mobility and the Environment in Canadian History examines a wide range of topics, from the impact of seasonal climactic conditions on different transportation modes, to the environmental consequences of building mobility corridors and pathways, to the relationship between changing forms of mobility with tourism and other recreational activities. Contributors make use of traditional archival sources, as well as historical geographic information systems (HGIS), qualitative and quantitative analysis, and critical theory. This thought-provoking collection divides the intersection of environmental and mobility history into two approaches. The chapters in the first section deal primarily with the construction and productive use of mobility technologies and infrastructure, as well as their environmental constraints and consequences. The chapters in the second section focus on consumers' uses of those vehicles and pathways: on pleasure travel, tourism, and recreational mobility. Together, they highlight three quintessentially Canadian themes: seasonality, links between mobility and natural resource development, and urbanites' experiences of the environment through mobility
