Book excerpt: A model of a microwave-induced plasma propulsion system has been developed in one dimension for a transverse electric mode (TE sub 10) of operation in a rectangular waveguide. Available experimental data are compared to the computational results for the case of a planar propagating plasma wave and, using a TE sub 10 mode-shape approximation, for a wave propagating in a waveguide. Temperature profiles, plasma propagation velocities, velocity profiles, and absorbed power histories are obtained for flow of helium from .5 to 1 atmosphere pressure and 500 to 3000 watts input power at a frequency of 2. 45 GHz. The computational results show the observed jumping of the plasma towards the microwave source. Peak plasma temperatures range from 8000 to 9000 K over the input power range. For an input power of 1081.7 W the calculated percentage of power absorbed in approximately 70 percent for the planar case and 40 percent for the waveguide case. Comparisons with experimental data indicate other mechanisms (not involving transient processes), most likely associated with the nonequilibrium behavior of the plasma, are responsible for the disagreement between the model results and the observed plasma propagation velocities.

It has been written with in mind technical propulsion systems generally based on lift producing profiles. We assume the fluid, which is admitted in conventional hydrody namics, to be incompressible. Further we assume the occurring Reynolds numbers to be sufficiently high such that the inertia forces dominate by far the viscous forces, therefore we take the fluid to be inviscid. Of course it must be realized that viscosity plays an important part in a number of phenomena displayed in real flows, such as flow separation at the nose of a profile and the entrainment of fluid by a ship's hull. Another ap proximation which will be used in general is that the problems are linearized. In other words it is assumed that the induced disturbance velocities are sufficiently small, such that their squares can be neglected with respect to these velocities themselves. Hence it is necessary to evaluate the domain of validity of the results with respect to these two a priori assumptions. Anyhow it seems advisable to have first a good understanding of the linearized non-viscous theory before embarking on complicated theories which describe more or less realistic situations. For elaborations of the theory to realistic situations we will refer to current literature. In low Reynolds number flow, singular external forces and moments are very useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this program is to assess the feasibility of the beamed energy propulsion concept for Air Force missions. The results of the study indicate that beamed energy propulsion is technically feasible. No fundamental obstacles have been identified. However considerable technical development is needed in many areas before the concept can be operationally implemented. In order to minimize the required collector area, laser concepts are preferred over microwaves. If space based laser transmitter concepts are to be cost effective they will require the availability of megawatt level space nuclear or solar power stations. In view of the large total energy required for each mission, ground based transmitters will be most cost effective when they are operated closed cycle from central station electric power. Laser transmitting ranges greater than several hundred nautical miles will result in excessive collector sizes. Therefore, ground based transmitters applications will be restricted to orbital functions which can be performed at low orbital altitudes. Three promising applications have been identified. The laser powered tug can be cost effective compared to an advanced cryogenic tug. Apsidal rotation correction and drag make-up are two other missions where significant advantages may be realized for the laser powered concept.

Book excerpt: This book includes numerous calculations for the many specific examples included within. I have included the many calculated examples to provide the reader with immediate justifications for the numerous concepts described. This was not done to belittle or talk down to the reader but rather to give the reader a clear sense of the plausibility for the propulsion methods and performance capabilities thereof. Interstellar travel at the many specific highly relativistic velocities contemplated in this bookand, in some cases, extreme vehicle massesis still a very controversial subject but nonetheless a highly mathematicalized and intelligible subject. My hope and intention is to thus clearly inspire and show the reader the plausibility of the concepts by providing the reader with proper evidence through his or her simple inspection of the formulas and values included in the computations. Some speculative physics is included, which is based on commonly presented theoretical constructs.

The reduction of the fuel consumption of these vehicles has become a top priority. Many ideas to reach that objective have been presented. In most cases these systems are more complex than the traditional approaches. For such complex systems a heuristic design approach fails. The only way to deal with this situation is to employ model-based methods. This text provides an introduction to the mathematical modeling and subsequent optimization of vehicle propulsion systems and their supervisory control algorithms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aviation propulsion development continues to rely upon fossil fuels for the vast majority of commercial and military applications. Until these fuels are depleted or abandoned, burning them will continue to jeopardize air quality and provoke increased regulation. With those challenges in mind, research and development of more efficient and electric propulsion systems will expand. Fuel-cell technology is but one example that addresses such emission and resource challenges, and others, including negligible acoustic emissions and the potential to leverage current infrastructure models. For now, these technologies are consigned to smaller aircraft applications, but are expected to mature toward use in larger aircraft. Additionally, measures such as electric/conventional hybrid configurations will ultimately increase efficiencies and knowledge of electric systems while minimizing industrial costs. Requirements for greater flight time, stealth characteristics, and thrust-to-power ratios adds urgency to the development of efficient propulsion methods for applications such as UAVs, which looks to technologies such as asymmetrical capacitors to enhance electric propulsion efficiency. This book will take the reader through various technologies that will enable a more-electric aircraft future, as well as design methods and certification requirements of more-electric engines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The official scope of this study was (1) to review and analyze the state-of-art in beamed-energy propulsion (BEP) by identifying potential game-changing applications, (2) to formulate a roadmap of technology development, and (3) to identify key near-term technology demonstrations to rapidly advance elements of BEP technology to Technology Readiness Level (TRL). The two major areas of interest were launching payloads and space propulsion. More generally, the study was requested and structured to address basic mission feasibility. The attraction of BEP is the potential for high specific impulse (Isp) while removing the power generation mass. The rapid advancements in high-energy beamed-power systems and optics over the past 20 years warranted a fresh look at the technology. BEP could help meet the known needs of NASA and/or the Department of Defense (DOD), providing low-cost, rapid access to space for operationally responsive military systems, scientific payloads, and the commercialization of space. For launching payloads, the study concluded that using BEP to propel vehicles into space is technically feasible if a commitment to develop new technologies and large investments can be made over long periods of time. Such a commitment would include specific technologies like multi-megawatt power lasers and microwave sources as well as building new launch facility infrastructure. The costs of the infrastructure are high. From a commercial competitive standpoint, if an advantage of beamed energy for Earth-to-orbit (ETO) is to be found, it will rest with smaller, frequently launched payloads. For space propulsion, the study concluded that using beamed energy to propel vehicles from low Earth orbit to geosynchronous Earth orbit (LEO-GEO) and into deep space is definitely feasible and showed distinct advantages and greater potential over current propulsion technologies. However, this conclusion also assumes that upfront infrastructure investments and commitments to critical technologies will be made over long periods of time. BEP energy source requirements are much less than for the launch applications. Lower propulsion costs with shorter transit times for LEO-GEO servicing missions and faster science missions to the outer planets are the major benefits. The chief issue, similar to that for payloads, is high infrastructure costs. As can happen in detailed examinations of innovative approaches, the study uncovered two unanticipated areas that appear to have great potential and therefore are worthy of consideration for new investment, at least at the "detailed study" level. BEP could provide the key to combining propulsion, power, and communications systems for in-space applications, thus creating a new class of small spacecraft with minimal systems and reducing their complexity, cost, and mass. Beaming energy to a thermal optical plasma engine could provide a highly efficient technology for high-thrust and high-ISP space propulsion. The specifics of these concepts are provided in the main body of the report. Finally, the intention of this study was to work within the time and resources allotted to determine the feasibility of BEP. This involved achieving a single closed-design solution for each mission analyzed which is, in all probability, not the optimum solution. As such, proponents of the investigated concepts may not agree with the study's findings and final design solutions, citing that better performance could be achieved with additional design effort. The authors do not disagree with that perspective. Nonetheless, the study management team was satisfied that the results were sufficient to meet the primary objective, which was to prove or disprove the feasibility of the concept and missions. It is also noted that at this time all possible future demonstrations of beamed energy and power transfer will be pursued solely by NASA.
