Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on lectures given at Harvard University during the academic year 1960-1961. The presentation assumes knowledge of the elements of modern algebra (groups, vector spaces, etc.) and point-set topology and some elementary analysis. Rather than giving all the basic information or touching upon every topic in the field, this work treats various selected topics in differential geometry. The author concisely addresses standard material and spreads exercises throughout the text. His reprint has two additions to the original volume: a paper written jointly with V. Guillemin at the beginning of a period of intense interest in the equivalence problem and a short description from the author on results in the field that occurred between the first and the second printings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the Calculus of Variations and its use in modelling mechanics and physics problems. Presenting a geometric approach to the subject, it progressively guides the reader through this very active branch of mathematics, accompanying key statements with a huge variety of exercises, some of them solved. Stressing the need to overcome limitations of the initial point of view, and emphasising the interconnectivity of various branches of mathematics (algebra, analysis and geometry), the book includes some advanced material to challenge the most motivated students. Systematic, short historical notes provide details on the subject’s odyssey, and how new tools have been developed over the last two centuries. This English translation updates a set of notes for a course first given at the École polytechnique in 1987. It will be accessible to graduate students and advanced undergraduates.

Book excerpt: At the summer school in Pisa in September 1996, Luigi Ambrosio and Norman Dancer each gave a course on the geometric problem of evolution of a surface by mean curvature, and degree theory with applications to PDEs respectively. This self-contained presentation accessible to PhD students bridged the gap between standard courses and advanced research on these topics. The resulting book is divided accordingly into 2 parts, and neatly illustrates the 2-way interaction of problems and methods. Each of the courses is augmented and complemented by additional short chapters by other authors describing current research problems and results.

This book was released on 2011-03-23 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1909, when my Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces was published, the tensor calculus, which had previously been invented by Ricci, was adopted by Einstein in his General Theory of Relativity, and has been developed further in the study of Riemannian Geometry and various generalizations of the latter. In the present book the tensor calculus of cuclidean 3-space is developed and then generalized so as to apply to a Riemannian space of any number of dimensions. The tensor calculus as here developed is applied in Chapters III and IV to the study of differential geometry of surfaces in 3-space, the material treated being equivalent to what appears in general in the first eight chapters of my former book with such additions as follow from the introduction of the concept of parallelism of Levi-Civita and the content of the tensor calculus. Of the many exercises in the book some involve merely direct application of the text, but most of them constitute an extension of it. In the writing of the book I have received valuable assistance and criticism from Professor H. P. Robertson and from my students, Messrs. Isaac Battin, Albert J. Coleman, Douglas R. Crosby, John Giese, Donald C. May, and in particular, Wayne Johnson. The excellent line drawings and half-tone illustrations were conceived and executed by Mr. John H. Lewis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This English edition could serve as a text for a first year graduate course on differential geometry, as did for a long time the Chicago Notes of Chern mentioned in the Preface to the German Edition. Suitable references for ordin ary differential equations are Hurewicz, W. Lectures on ordinary differential equations. MIT Press, Cambridge, Mass., 1958, and for the topology of surfaces: Massey, Algebraic Topology, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1977. Upon David Hoffman fell the difficult task of transforming the tightly constructed German text into one which would mesh well with the more relaxed format of the Graduate Texts in Mathematics series. There are some e1aborations and several new figures have been added. I trust that the merits of the German edition have survived whereas at the same time the efforts of David helped to elucidate the general conception of the Course where we tried to put Geometry before Formalism without giving up mathematical rigour. 1 wish to thank David for his work and his enthusiasm during the whole period of our collaboration. At the same time I would like to commend the editors of Springer-Verlag for their patience and good advice. Bonn Wilhelm Klingenberg June,1977 vii From the Preface to the German Edition This book has its origins in a one-semester course in differential geometry which 1 have given many times at Gottingen, Mainz, and Bonn.

Book excerpt: This book collects invited contributions by specialists in the domain of elliptic partial differential equations and geometric flows. The articles provide a balance between introductory surveys and the most recent research, with a unique perspective on singular phenomena. Notions such as scans and the study of the evolution by curvature of networks of curves are completely new and lead the reader to the frontiers of the domain. The intended readership are postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations that arise from variational problems, as well as researchers in related fields such as particle physics and optimization.
