Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translations and Reprints, Vol. 2: From the Original Sources of European History An English city or borough,1 in the early Middle Ages, is to be looked upon, in the greater number of cases, simply as a manor or group of adjacent manors, where facilities for trade or handicraft have led to a larger and more concentrated population than could have subsisted merely on the agriculture of the rural commun ity. In each of these towns local customs grew up, just as the custom of the manor existed in each village in the Open country but more highly developed, as a consequence of the closer population, mercantile occupation, and more active life of the townspeople. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Translations and Reprints From the Original Sources of History, Vol. 2: Established 1894 The present volume was first suggested by my studies on the "Internal Organization and the Seat of Government of the Merchant Adventurers." While pursuing investigations in that connection, I came constantly upon facts and conditions which revealed that the activities and influence of the Merchant Adventurers were vastly more widespread and important than is generally supposed. Evidence, proving conclusively the continued existence of the Fellowship down to the early nineteenth century, a date almost two hundred years later than the period with which the studies on the Adventurers usually conclude, was also found. Furthermore, there exist in some of the best secondary writers on English economic history in regard to the Adventurers' Society, statements and theories that are plainly out of accord with the testimony of the sources. Some of these pertain to the essential features of the Society's organization and history, and therefore call for especial investigation. It was to draw attention to these facts, and to assist, in a modest way, in the work of clearing up the history of an organization whose activities have been of such vital importance to English economic and political development, that the publication of this volume was undertaken. Of the sources for the history of the Merchant Adventurers, Schanz says: "Die Literatur uber die Merchant Adventurers ist ausserordentlich durftig; die Neuzeit hat dem Gegenstand so gut wie keine Beachtung geschenkt. Book excerpt: Revised 2016 Edition: Despite the sensational nature of its subject, Lost in Translation: Rediscovering the Hebrew Roots of our Faith is written in simple, clear, rational language that relies 100 percent on the Bible as the ultimate authority. The book's authors clear away centuries of confusion surrounding subjects that are seldom addressed in modern sermons and Bible studies. Using the ancient Hebrew language and culture, the authors clarify many of the Bible's so-called "mysteries" and help the reader rediscover many of the foundational truths that have been "lost in translation." Topics include: - Who is the Bride of Messiah? - Is there a difference between covenant and testament? - Israel: Who are they really? - What is the difference between devils, demons, and nephilim? Join us on an exciting adventure to rediscover the treasures still buried within the pages of The Book that reveal the pathway to the heart of God. "A must-read for the church! Providing foundational insights which lead to a greater understanding of God's master plan, this book will open your eyes to scriptural distortions due to the centuries of Greek influence on the church." - Corey Berti, Senior Pastor, Silver Valley Worship Center, ID "I've been a believer for 12 years, and I've read numerous scriptures that didn't make sense. The authors do a tremendous job of explaining the importance of understanding our Hebrew roots which provide context and clarity to the overall theme of God's message. It's like watching TV in black and white and then suddenly seeing it in color. The truth hasn't changed, but it's meaning becomes more vivid." - Jason Carr

Book excerpt: For the 400th anniversary of Moliere's birth, Richard Wilbur's unsurpassed translations of Molière's plays--themselves towering achievements in English verse--are brought together by Library of America in a two-volume edition One of the most accomplished American poets of his generation, Richard Wilbur (1921-2017) was also a prolific translator of French and Russian literature. His verse translations of Molière's plays are especially admired by readers and are still performed today in theaters around the world. "Wilbur," the critic John Simon once wrote, "makes Molière into as great an English verse playwright as he was a French one." Now, for the first time, all ten of Wilbur's unsurpassed translations of Molière's plays are brought together in two-volume Library of America edition, fulfilling the poet's vision for the translations. The second volume includes the elusive masterpiece, The Misanthrope, often said to occupy the same space in comedy as Shakespeare's Hamlet does in tragedy; the fantastic farce Amphitryon, about how Jupiter and Mercury commandeer the identities of two mortals ; Tartuffe, Molière's biting satire of religious hypocrisy; and The Learned Ladies, like Tarfuffe, a drama of a household turned suddenly upside down. This volume includes the original introductions by Richard Wilbur and a foreword by Adam Gopnik on the exquisite art of Wilbur's translations.

Book excerpt: This is the second book in a three-volume series that will cover the entire book of Revelation in awe-inspiring detail, expounding and expanding on familiar verses in God's word that have been misunderstood and misconstrued for many years. In this volume, the authors explore the first half of Revelation from the perspective they established so clearly in Volume i - that of a Hebrew God speaking through a Hebrew believer to an audience that was intimately familiar with the Hebrew language, culture, customs, and concepts that form both the literal and the metaphorical foundation for vast portions of Revelation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular and multimodal forms of cultural products are becoming increasingly visible within translation studies research. Interest in translation and music, however, has so far been relatively limited, mainly because translation of musical material has been considered somewhat outside the limits of translation studies, as traditionally conceived. Difficulties associated with issues such as the 'musicality' of lyrics, the fuzzy boundaries between translation, adaptation and rewriting, and the pervasiveness of covert or unacknowledged translations of musical elements in a variety of settings have generally limited the research in this area to overt and canonized translations such as those done for the opera. Yet the intersection of translation and music can be a fascinating field to explore, and one which can enrich our understanding of what translation is and how it relates to other forms of expression. This special issue is an attempt to open up the field of translation and music to a wider audience within translation studies, and to an extent, within musicology and cultural studies. The volume includes contributions from a wide range of musical genres and languages: from those that investigate translation and code-switching in North African rap and rai, and the intertextual and intersemiotic translations revolving around Mahler's lieder in Chinese, to the appropriation and after-life of Kurdish folk songs in Turkish, and the emergence of rock'n roll in Russian. Other papers examine the reception of Anglo-American stage musicals and musical films in Italy and Spain, the concept of 'singability' with examples from Scandinavian languages, and the French dubbing of musical episodes of TV series. The volume also offers an annotated bibliography on opera translation and a general bibliography on translation and music.

This unique anthology of primary texts in classical rhetoric contains the work of 24 ancient writers from Homer through St. Augustine, including Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian, Tacitus, and Longinus. Along with many widely recognized translations, special features include the first English translations of works by Theon and Nicolaus, as well as new translations of two works by important sophists, Gorgias’ encomium on Helen and Alcidamas’ essay on composition. The writers are grouped chronologically into historical periods, allowing the reader to understand the scope and significance of rhetoric in antiquity. Introductions are included to each period, as well as to each writer, with writers’ biographies, major works, and salient features of excerpts.
