Book excerpt: To initiate its new Ph.D. Program in Transcultural German Studies, jointly offered by the University of Arizona and the University of Leipzig, the Department of German Studies at the University of Arizona organized an international conference on Transcultural German Studies in Tucson from March 29-31, 2007. Conference participants sought to define the nature of Transcultural German Studies. This new, interdisciplinary field of inquiry investigates the cultural landscapes of the German-speaking world in the light of globalization and inter- and transcultural contact. The contributions that comprise the volume are by scholars who work in a number of related fields, exploring transcultural phenomena - past and present - evident in selected literary, filmic, musical and historical texts.

Download or read book Language written by Annikki Koskensalo and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As speakers of different languages interact, language contact will occur. Language contact will necessarily lead to language change for both parties involved in such contact. As languages change, the issue of competence becomes problematic. Who has the right to say what language will be taught in schools, or what kind of language will be published in the press and spoken in the media in a world where languages constantly change? The articles in this collection refer to several language areas in Europe, from the North (Scandinavia), the South (Spain / Balkan), the East (Ukraine / Russia), as well as the Center (Austria / Germany) and includes one contribution on Canada. They present different cases of language competence and assessment, languages in contact in different settings, and language changes which are related to applied linguistics, both from a sociolinguistic and an educational linguistic point of view. Book Synopsis Communication Strategies of Governments and NGOs by : Manuel Adolphsen
Download or read book Communication Strategies of Governments and NGOs written by Manuel Adolphsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Processes of global governance are mostly invisible to ordinary citizens, due to an overall lack of accompanying transnational public discourse. However, there are exceptional occasions on which media around the world do pay attention to global governance: high-level summits, such as the UN climate change conferences. Through a detailed case study of UN climate summits, Manuel Adolphsen investigates the transnational communication strategies and behind-the-scenes coordination processes that prominent governments and NGOs carry out on such occasions. His research reveals political actors’ conscious use of summits as public diplomacy resources as well as the prevalence of on-site coproduction routines among journalists and PR professionals. Summits feature complex public diplomacy constellations interweaving transnational, international, and also solely domestic processes.
Book Synopsis Kith, Kin, and Neighbors by : David Frick
Download or read book Kith, Kin, and Neighbors written by David Frick and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-10 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-seventeenth century, Wilno (Vilnius), the second capital of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, was home to Poles, Lithuanians, Germans, Ruthenians, Jews, and Tatars, who worshiped in Catholic, Uniate, Orthodox, Calvinist, and Lutheran churches, one synagogue, and one mosque. Visitors regularly commented on the relatively peaceful coexistence of this bewildering array of peoples, languages, and faiths. In Kith, Kin, and Neighbors, David Frick shows how Wilno's inhabitants navigated and negotiated these differences in their public and private lives. This remarkable book opens with a walk through the streets of Wilno, offering a look over the royal quartermaster's shoulder as he made his survey of the city's intramural houses in preparation for King Wladyslaw IV's visit in 1636. These surveys (Lustrations) provide concise descriptions of each house within the city walls that, in concert with court and church records, enable Frick to accurately discern Wilno's neighborhoods and human networks, ascertain the extent to which such networks were bounded confessionally and culturally, determine when citizens crossed these boundaries, and conclude which kinds of cross-confessional constellations were more likely than others. These maps provide the backdrops against which the dramas of Wilno lives played out: birth, baptism, education, marriage, separation or divorce, guild membership, poor relief, and death and funeral practices. Perhaps the most complete reconstruction ever written of life in an early modern European city, Kith, Kin, and Neighbors sets a new standard for urban history and for work on the religious and communal life of Eastern Europe.

Download or read book Dolmetschen als Dienst am Menschen written by Klaus Kaindl and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Rampart Nations by : Dr. Liliya Berezhnaya
Download or read book Rampart Nations written by Dr. Liliya Berezhnaya and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-03-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “bulwark” or antemurale myth—whereby a region is imagined as a defensive barrier against a dangerous Other—has been a persistent strand in the development of Eastern European nationalisms. While historical studies of the topic have typically focused on clashes and overlaps between sociocultural and religious formations, Rampart Nations delves deeper to uncover the mutual transfers and multi-sided national and interconfessional conflicts that helped to spread bulwark myths through Europe’s eastern periphery over several centuries. Ranging from art history to theology to political science, this volume offers new ways of understanding the political, social, and religious forces that continue to shape identity in Eastern Europe.
