Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the most common state-of-the art methods for substructuring and model reduction and presents a framework that encompasses most method, highlighting their similarities and differences. For example, popular methods such as Component Mode Synthesis, Hurty/Craig-Bampton, and the Rubin methods, which are popular within finite element software, are reviewed. Similarly, experimental-to-analytical substructuring methods such as impedance/frequency response based substructuring, modal substructuring and the transmission simulator method are presented. The overarching mathematical concepts are reviewed, as well as practical details needed to implement the methods. Various examples are presented to elucidate the methods, ranging from academic examples such as spring-mass systems, which serve to clarify the concepts, to real industrial case studies involving automotive and aerospace structures. The wealth of examples presented reveal both the potential and limitations of the methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measured transfer functions of acoustic systems are often used to derive single-number parameters. The uncertainty analysis is commonly focused on the derived parameters but not on the transfer function as the primary quantity. This thesis presents an approach to assess the uncertainty contributions in these transfer functions by using analytic models. Uncertainties caused by the measurement method are analyzed with a focus on the underlying signal processing. In particular, the influence of nonlinearities in the acoustic measurement chain are modeled to predict artifacts in the measured signals and hence the calculated acoustic transfer function. Secondly, characterization methods commonly applied in the field of signal processing are linked to the acoustic scenarios and the main influencing parameters. Acoustic parameters are then derived analytically and by means of Monte Carlo simulations considering the uncertainty of these input parameters. In order to provide airborne applications, analytic models for sound barrier and room acoustic measurements are developed incorporating the directivity and the orientation of the sound source as well as the positions of sources and receivers. The simulated uncertainty contributions are validated by measurements. The same approach is also applied to structure-borne sound applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early seventies, the development of the automobile has been characterized by a steady increase in the deploymnet of onboard electronics systems and software. This trend continues unabated and is driven by rising end-user demands and increasingly stringent environmental requirements. Today, almost every function onboard the modern vehicle is electronically controlled or monitored. The software-based implementation of vehicle functions provides for unparalleled freedoms of concept and design. However, automobile development calls for the accommodation of contrasting prerequisites – such as higher demands on safety and reliability vs. lower cost ceilings, longer product life cycles vs. shorter development times – along with growing proliferation of model variants. Automotive Software Engineering has established its position at the center of these seemingly conflicting opposites. This book provides background basics as well as numerous suggestions, rare insights, and cases in point concerning those processes, methods, and tools that contribute to the surefooted mastery of the use of electronic systems and software in the contemporary automobile.
