Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second edition of this popular book, Dr. White takes readers on a tour of the human immune system, explores the nature of immune disorders from cancer to HIV and presents evidence that immune messengers called transfer factors can help the body beat a wide variety of diseases for which effective treatments are lacking. In language that is easy to follow, Dr. White explains how transfer factors help the body fight viruses (herpes, hepatitis C, HPV, HIV), mycobacteria (tuberculosis), cell-wall deficient bacteria (Lyme), cancers, autoimmune diseases and other conditions. Like vaccines but safer, transfer factors can be used to immunize the public against diseases before they spread. This book is an enjoyable read about a fascinating topic. As in the first edition, Dr. White blends science, history, medicine and politics with compelling story telling and wit. Whether you are a patient, doctor, health enthusiast or just a fan of good science writing, this is one to keep on your book shelf. Bound to be classic in the alternative medicine literature.

Book excerpt: Immunobiology of Transfer Factor compiles research papers presented at the Fourth International Transfer Factor Workshop, held at the Given Institute of Pathobiology in Aspen, Colorado, on October 3-6, 1982. This book focuses on the immunologic effects of transfer factor, which are supported by in vitro and in vivo experiments that indicate immunologically specific interactions between transfer factor and antigens. The topics include the selective removal of transfer factor activity with antigen, antigen-specific suppressor factor in human leukocyte dialysates, and specific suppressor dialysates from mice. The kinetics of immune response and production of transfer factor in bovine, dialyzable leukocyte extracts in pulmonary diseases, and mechanisms of action of human transfer factor are also elaborated. This compilation is suitable for microbiologists, immunologists, and specialists researching on transfer factor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of immune deficiency has become of special importance for two reasons. First, conditions with well defined defects in the immune system could be analyzed as "experiments of nature" in terms of finding out the accurate biological relevance of the defective link in the immune system. Secondly, the recognition of immune deficiency states has become important in order to provide the patients with the treatment necessary to remedy these defects. With regard to immune deficiency states in patients, these have been instrumental as "experiments of nature" in the revelation by Drs. Good and Cooper and their associates of the two-component structure of the immune system, a discovery which can be consi dered as a major breakthrough in the history of immunopathology. Today's research allows us to go far beyond this basic two component structure with the assessment of disorders affecting either cell to cell interactions or regarding subsets of lymphocyte populations. Furthermore, the association of immune deficiency with distinct enzymatic defects of purine metabolism is opening the door to the molecular level of immune deficiency. Dr. Cooper and Dr. Lawton have succeeded in obtaining the collaboration of the leaders in the field of immune deficiency. In view of the importance of their contributions in scientific and clinical terms, we decided to prepare a book version of the two issues of Seminars in Immunopathology devoted to this subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HIV, hepatitis, influenza, the common cold, herpes, Ebola, Hantavirus, West Nile fever, dengue, TT virus--the viral world keeps posing new major challenges to human health each year. At the same time as this onslaught of emerging powerful viral infections, our antibiotic arsenals are losing ground and our immune systems are compromised. Can we handle the next viral epidemic? Yes, says James Williams, an experienced, credentialled naturopath, acupuncturist, and expert in traditional Chinese medicine. We can shore up our immune system to handle current and any future viral infections and not be dependent on conventional vaccinations or antibiotics to insure our health. In 10 practical steps, Dr. Williams shows how to develop unassailable viral immunity using natural approaches. If you already have a viral infection, these steps will help you reverse its effects; if you're concerned about exposure to one in the future, these steps will give you the keys to prevention. Included in these steps are the best that natural medicine offers: stress management, enzymes, nutrients, detoxification, oxygen therapy, immune modulators, hormones, natural antiviral medicines and anti-inflammatory medicines, Chinese and Western herbs, and more. "Viral immunity is without question one of the most important health issues of this century," says Dr. Williams. "The message of this book is clear. You can improve your system in general with diet, lifestyle, and natural medicines. Here you will find natural ways of improving immune function, remedies to treat viral infections, and suggestions on how to reframe outdated concepts that could otherwise prevent you from obtaining effective treatment."

Book excerpt: Immunodermatology presents a comprehensive examination of the proceedings that resulted from the International Immunodermatology Symposium which happened in London. It discusses the relationship of immuno-histochemical study to skin disease. It addresses the function and recognition of lymphocytes. Some of the topics covered in the book are the immunological observations in 12 cases of Kaposi’s herpetic eruption; anti-inflammatory effects of adrenoceptor agonists in patients with atopic eczema; a study of the sensitivity and specificity of cutaneous vascular immunofluorescence; and functional activity of granulocytes from patients with neutrophilic dermatoses. The mechanisms of cutaneous lupus erythematosus are fully covered. An in-depth account of the cytochemical and immunological findings in cutaneous multilobated cell lymphoma are provided. The immunohistological analysis of dermal leprous granulomas is completely presented. A chapter is devoted to the study of human epidermal cell differentiation using monoclonal antibodies. Another section focuses on the prognostic significance of melanoma-associated antigens in primary and metastatic melanomas. The book can provide useful information to doctors, dermatologists, students, and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative, short, new textbook, Rod Langman offers a conceptual framework within which students can understand the evolution of the immune system. Evolutionary selection for resistance to infectious disease is shown to be the driving force that has shaped the immune system into a remarkably effective and efficient system of defense. In the midst of the current information explosion in immunological science, when many students are under the impression that the immune system is almost too complex to understand as a whole, The Immune System can be used alone as a text for an introductory course or used in conjunction with any of the several descriptive texts already on the market.
