Book excerpt: The Conference was organized by the Institute of Information Theory and Automation of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences from July 7 - 11, 1986, in Prague. The round number of the conference was only one of the jubilees connected with its organization. Namely, thirty years of the Prague Conferences (the first one was organized in autumn 1956 in Liblice near Prague), and two anniversaries of Professor Anton1n Spacek, the inspirator and first organizer of the Prague Conferences - 75 years of his birth and 25 years of his untimely death. (More about Professor Spacek can be found in the Transactions of the Sixth Prague Conferen ce) • The Tenth Prague Conference kept the traditional style and orien tation typical for the previous Prague Conferences. Almost two hund red of participants from 23 countries (Algerie, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, German Democratic Republic, Great Britain, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Ja pan, Netherlands, Poland, Roumania, Soviet Union, Sweden, Switzerland, United States, Vietnam and West Berlin) took part in its sessions and discussions. There were 14 invited lectures and . 92 short contri butions included in four parallel sections of the Conference program me: further, 12 contributions were presented as posters. The invited lectures and submitted contributions covered the three traditional subjects of the Prague Conferences introduced in their title, as well as lots of further applications of the probability theory and mathe matical statistics. Most of the presented lectures and contributions are published in the present Conference Transactions.

Book excerpt: The IUTAM Symposium on Advances in Nonlinear Stochastic Mechanics, held in Trondheim July 3-7, 1995, was the eighth of a series of IUTAM sponsored symposia which focus on the application of stochastic methods in mechanics. The previous meetings took place in Coventry, UK (1972), Sout'hampton, UK (1976), FrankfurtjOder, Germany (1982), Stockholm, Sweden (1984), Innsbruckjlgls, Austria (1987), Turin, Italy (1991) and San Antonio, Texas (1993). The symposium provided an extraordinary opportunity for scholars to meet and discuss recent advances in stochastic mechanics. The participants represented a wide range of expertise, from pure theoreticians to people primarily oriented toward applications. A significant achievement of the symposium was the very extensive discussions taking place over the whole range from highly theoretical questions to practical engineering applications. Several presentations also clearly demonstrated the substantial progress that has been achieved in recent years in terms of developing and implement ing stochastic analysis techniques for mechanical engineering systems. This aspect was further underpinned by specially invited extended lectures on computational stochastic mechanics, engineering applications of stochastic mechanics, and nonlinear active control. The symposium also reflected the very active and high-quality research taking place in the field of stochastic stability. Ten presentations were given on this topic ofa total of47 papers. A main conclusion that can be drawn from the proceedings of this symposium is that stochastic mechanics as a subject has reached great depth and width in both methodology and applicability.

Book excerpt: The book is devoted to studies of quasi-stationary phenomena in nonlinearly perturbed stochastic systems. New methods of asymptotic analysis for nonlinearly perturbed stochastic processes based on new types of asymptotic expansions for perturbed renewal equation and recurrence algorithms for construction of asymptotic expansions for Markov type processes with absorption are presented. Asymptotic expansions are given in mixed ergodic (for processes) and large deviation theorems (for absorption times) for nonlinearly perturbed regenerative processes, semi-Markov processes, and Markov chains. Applications to analysis of quasi-stationary phenomena in nonlinearly perturbed queueing systems, population dynamics and epidemic models, and for risk processes are presented. The book also contains an extended bibliography of works in the area. It is an essential reference for theoretical and applied researchers in the field of stochastic processes and their applications and may be also useful for doctoral and advanced undergraduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, a new approach to reaction kinetics began to emerge: one based on mathematical models of reaction kinetics, or formal reaction kinetics. Since then, there has been a rapid and accelerated development in both deterministic and stochastic kinetics, primarily because mathematicians studying differential equations and algebraic geometry have taken an interest in the nonlinear differential equations of kinetics, which are relatively simple, yet capable of depicting complex behavior such as oscillation, chaos, and pattern formation. The development of stochastic models was triggered by the fact that novel methods made it possible to measure molecules individually. Now it is high time to make the results of the last half-century available to a larger audience: students of chemistry, chemical engineering and biochemistry, not to mention applied mathematics. Based on recent papers, this book presents the most important concepts and results, together with a wealth of solved exercises. The book is accompanied by the authors’ Mathematica package, ReactionKinetics, which helps both students and scholars in their everyday work, and which can be downloaded from http://extras.springer.com/ and also from the authors’ websites. Further, the large set of unsolved problems provided may serve as a springboard for individual research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential Equations are very important tools in Mathematical Analysis. They are widely found in mathematics itself and in its applications to statistics, computing, electrical circuit analysis, dynamical systems, economics, biology, and so on. Recently there has been an increasing interest in and widely-extended use of differential equations and systems of fractional order (that is, of arbitrary order) as better models of phenomena in various physics, engineering, automatization, biology and biomedicine, chemistry, earth science, economics, nature, and so on. Now, new unified presentation and extensive development of special functions associated with fractional calculus are necessary tools, being related to the theory of differentiation and integration of arbitrary order (i.e., fractional calculus) and to the fractional order (or multi-order) differential and integral equations. This book provides learners with the opportunity to develop an understanding of advancements of special functions and the skills needed to apply advanced mathematical techniques to solve complex differential equations and Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). Subject matters should be strongly related to special functions involving mathematical analysis and its numerous applications. The main objective of this book is to highlight the importance of fundamental results and techniques of the theory of complex analysis for differential equations and PDEs and emphasizes articles devoted to the mathematical treatment of questions arising in physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering, particularly those that stress analytical aspects and novel problems and their solutions. Specific topics include but are not limited to Partial differential equations Least squares on first-order system Sequence and series in functional analysis Special functions related to fractional (non-integer) order control systems and equations Various special functions related to generalized fractional calculus Operational method in fractional calculus Functional analysis and operator theory Mathematical physics Applications of numerical analysis and applied mathematics Computational mathematics Mathematical modeling This book provides the recent developments in special functions and differential equations and publishes high-quality, peer-reviewed book chapters in the area of nonlinear analysis, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, and related applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In science, engineering and economics, decision problems are frequently modelled by optimizing the value of a (primary) objective function under stated feasibility constraints. In many cases of practical relevance, the optimization problem structure does not warrant the global optimality of local solutions; hence, it is natural to search for the globally best solution(s). Global Optimization in Action provides a comprehensive discussion of adaptive partition strategies to solve global optimization problems under very general structural requirements. A unified approach to numerous known algorithms makes possible straightforward generalizations and extensions, leading to efficient computer-based implementations. A considerable part of the book is devoted to applications, including some generic problems from numerical analysis, and several case studies in environmental systems analysis and management. The book is essentially self-contained and is based on the author's research, in cooperation (on applications) with a number of colleagues. Audience: Professors, students, researchers and other professionals in the fields of operations research, management science, industrial and applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, economics and the environmental sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use and misuse of statistics seems to be the signum temporis of past decades. But nowadays this practice seems slowly to be wearing away, and common sense and responsibility recapturing their position. It is our contention that little by little statistics should return to its starting point, i.e., to formalizing and analyzing empirical phenomena. This requires the reevalu ation of many traditions and the rejection of many myths. We hope that our book would go some way towards this aim. We show the sharp conflict between what is needed and what is feasible. Moreover, we show how slender are the links between theory and practice in statistical inference, links which are sometimes no more than mutual inspiration. In Part One we present the consecutive stages of formalization of statistical problems, i.e., the description of the experiment, the presentation of the aim of the investigation, and of the constraints put upon the decision rules. We stress the fact that at each of these stages there is room for arbitrariness. We prove that the links between the real problem and its formal counterpart are often so weak that the solution of the formal problem may have no rational interpretation at the practical level. We give a considerable amount of thought to the reduction of statistical problems.

Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to recent developments in the theory of generalized harmonic analysis and its applications. It is well known that convolutions, differential operators and diffusion processes are interconnected: the ordinary convolution commutes with the Laplacian, and the law of Brownian motion has a convolution semigroup property with respect to the ordinary convolution. Seeking to generalize this useful connection, and also motivated by its probabilistic applications, the book focuses on the following question: given a diffusion process Xt on a metric space E, can we construct a convolution-like operator * on the space of probability measures on E with respect to which the law of Xt has the *-convolution semigroup property? A detailed analysis highlights the connection between the construction of convolution-like structures and disciplines such as stochastic processes, ordinary and partial differential equations, spectral theory, special functions and integral transforms. The book will be valuable for graduate students and researchers interested in the intersections between harmonic analysis, probability theory and differential equations.

Book excerpt: LTE- A and Next Generation Wireless Networks: Channel Modeling and Performance describes recent advances in propagation and channel modeling necessary for simulating next generation wireless systems. Due to the radio spectrum scarcity, two fundamental changes are anticipated compared to the current status. Firstly, the strict reservation of a specific band for a unique standard could evolve toward a priority policy allowing the co-existence of secondary users in a band allocated to a primary system. Secondly, a huge increase of the number of cells is expected by combining outdoor base stations with smaller cells such as pico/femto cells and relays. This evolution is accompanied with the emergence of cognitive radio that becomes a reality in terminals together with the development of self-organization capabilities and distributed cooperative behaviors. The book is divided into three parts: Part I addresses the fundamentals (e.g. technologies, channel modeling principles etc.) Part II addresses propagation and modeling discussing topics such as indoor propagation, outdoor propagation, etc. Part III explores system performance and applications (e.g. MIMO Over-the-air testing, electromagnetic safety, etc).
