Book Synopsis Development of Societies: The Next Twenty-Five Years by : Institute of Social Studies
Download or read book Development of Societies: The Next Twenty-Five Years written by Institute of Social Studies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the product of a conference on the theme 'Development - the Next Twenty-five Years' which the Institute of Social Studies held in Decem ber 1977 to mark its own twenty-fifth anniversaryas a centre of development studies. We felt it appropriate at that point in time to caU together specialists from all over the world in an attempt to assess the 'state of play' in our field as we move into the last quarter of the twentieth century. 1 For several days, therefore, the Institute's new building house d a remarkable concentration of knowledge and experience concerning the problems of the so-calle d less developed countries, drawn from all over the world. Although it was inevitable that the participants should represent the past (and it was several times re marked that, in that sense, there were too few women present), the earnest and sometimes heated discussions looked to the future as much as to what had happened in the last twenty-five years. As the discussions proceeded, three things became apparent. Firstly , although the papers submitted did not fully reveal it, the ongoing debate between radicals and moderates, those who saw possibilities of change only basically through a direct break with existing structures and those who felt change possibIe within them, is by no means at an end.

Book Synopsis Starting the Twenty-first Century by : Gitta Tulea

Book excerpt: "Jrgen Habermas, speaking of postmodern society, remarked that extension of the means of communication not only allows a wide range of information, but it also encourages permanent connections between different peoples, cultures, and social discourses. It thus facilitates better general understanding, a clarifying of real or apparent contradictions. But this process becomes truly positive only when it is performed between equal members. Globalization of information does not minimize the possibility of conflict or terrorism, if fundamental social problems are not resolved or at least approached in an active way. This volume examines the major upheavals of the twentieth century and views within the framework of these events and challenges implications for the future. "Values and Cultural Changes in the Postmodern World," by Zygmunt Bauman explores the changing meaning of space in the globalizing environment; S.N. Eisenstadt analyzes the destructive components of modernity; and Irving Louis Horowitz draws attention to the classical values of the common universal culture. "Social Development and Policies in Contemporary Society," by Michael M. Cernea, examines the importance of the applied and policy-orientated research, especially in the developing countries, and David Marsland stresses the positive role of sociology in pointing to the possibilities of improving healthcare in modern society. "Societies in Transition-Eastern Europe," emphasizes transitions that have occurred in Eastern Europe. Rozalina Rjyvkina and Leonid Kosals provide an incisive study of the situation in Russia, while Jerzy J. Wiatr presents a comparative analysis of postcommunist societies, with special reference to Poland. "The Jewish World: Pre- and Post-Holocaust," by Regina Azria, discusses the identity problems in the Diaspora confronting modernity; Eva Etzioni-Halevi considers the newly developed Israeli society from the point of view of the exercise and distribution of power; and a most interesting contribution by Annette Wieviorka concerns the material and spiritual effects of the Holocaust on the Jews of France.Social historians and students of Judaica, as well as a general public interested in cultural pluralism will find this well-developed volume essential reading."--Provided by publisher.

Book Synopsis Sociology Beyond Societies by : John Urry
Download or read book Sociology Beyond Societies written by John Urry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking contribution to social theory, John Urry argues that the traditional basis of sociology - the study of society - is outmoded in an increasingly borderless world. If sociology is to make a pertinent contribution to the post societal era it must forget the social rigidities of the pre-global order and, instead, switch its focus to the study of both physical and virtual movement. In considering this sociology of mobilities, the book concerns itself with the travels of people, ideas, images, messages, waste products and money across international borders, and the implications these mobilities have to our experiences of time, space, dwelling and citizenship. Sociology Beyond Society extends recent debate about globalisation both by providing an analysis of how mobilities reconstitute social life in uneven and complex ways, and by arguing for the significance of objects, senses, and time and space in the theorising of contemporary life. This book will be essential reading for undergraduates and graduates studying sociology and cultural geography.
Book Synopsis Social Research in Developing Countries by : Martin Bulmer
Download or read book Social Research in Developing Countries written by Martin Bulmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paperback edition of an established text aims to deliver key information on social research methods in developing countries. It deals with the particular problems of carrying out social surveys and censuses in the Third World, which differ significantly from research in Western Europe or North America.; This book makes the difference clear, particularly in the areas of research design, sampling, data collection and the social context of research. The contributors are social scientists from a range of disciplines in 12 countries, all with firsthand practical experience of research in Asia, Africa or Latin America. They provide a guide to the pitfalls and possiblities of empirical research and pay attention to methodological marriages and to ethical and political problems. The formulation and implementation of policies for development depends on information as much as on social ideals or political objectives. This volume offers an account of social research methods and practice which facilitate the effective collection and productive use of accurate information.; The book is designed to appeal to students and teachers in development studies, sociology, economics, geography, political science and social statistics, and in applied fields such as planning, agricultural economics, education, health, housing and social welfare. It is also aimed at research workers in government, academic institutes and the voluntary sector in the Third World.
