Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Eighth Annual Meeting of the American Gastro Enterological Association, 1905 Adolf Kussmaul was the first of our losses. He died May 28, 1902, at the age of eighty, of heart failure, half an hour after he experienced some stenocardiac symptoms for the first time. He was born in Graben, near Carlsruhe, Ger many, as the son of a country practitioner from whom he inherited the faculties of a naturalist and the love for medicine. After completing his medical studies in Heidelberg and taking some post-graduate studies in Prague and Vienna, he served for a short time as military surgeon in the Baden army and then settled in Kadern, a small town in the picturesque region of the Black Forest, where he carried on a successful prac tice for four years until he became incapacitated for many months by an attack of paraplegia of obscure origin. After recovering from this dis ease he decided to begin life anew and to prepare himself for an academic career. With his meager savings as a base he pursued the study of t/ze scientific branches of medicine in Wurzburg.
