Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notwithstanding its title, the reader will not find in this book a systematic account of this huge subject. Certain classical aspects have been passed by, and the true title ought to be "Various questions of elementary combina torial analysis". For instance, we only touch upon the subject of graphs and configurations, but there exists a very extensive and good literature on this subject. For this we refer the reader to the bibliography at the end of the volume. The true beginnings of combinatorial analysis (also called combina tory analysis) coincide with the beginnings of probability theory in the 17th century. For about two centuries it vanished as an autonomous sub ject. But the advance of statistics, with an ever-increasing demand for configurations as well as the advent and development of computers, have, beyond doubt, contributed to reinstating this subject after such a long period of negligence. For a long time the aim of combinatorial analysis was to count the different ways of arranging objects under given circumstances. Hence, many of the traditional problems of analysis or geometry which are con cerned at a certain moment with finite structures, have a combinatorial character. Today, combinatorial analysis is also relevant to problems of existence, estimation and structuration, like all other parts of mathema tics, but exclusively forjinite sets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Basis of Statistics provides information pertinent to the methods and the mathematical basis of statistics. This book discusses the fundamental notion of statistical space. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the notion of statistical space in mathematical statistics and discusses other analogies with probability theory. This text then presents the notions of sufficiency and freedom, which are fundamental and useful in statistics but do not correspond to any notion in probability theory. Other chapters consider the theory of nonsequential tests and explain the practical meaning of the mathematical tools employed in statistics. This book discusses as well distributions used most frequently in classical statistical problems based on the normal distribution and provides relationships among these distributions. The final chapter deals with certain problems of mathematical statistics that are related to various problems of functional analysis. This book is a valuable resource for graduate and postgraduate students.

Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed description of the development of statistical theory. In the mid twentieth century, the development of mathematical statistics underwent an enduring change, due to the advent of more refined mathematical tools. New concepts like sufficiency, superefficiency, adaptivity etc. motivated scholars to reflect upon the interpretation of mathematical concepts in terms of their real-world relevance. Questions concerning the optimality of estimators, for instance, had remained unanswered for decades, because a meaningful concept of optimality (based on the regularity of the estimators, the representation of their limit distribution and assertions about their concentration by means of Anderson’s Theorem) was not yet available. The rapidly developing asymptotic theory provided approximate answers to questions for which non-asymptotic theory had found no satisfying solutions. In four engaging essays, this book presents a detailed description of how the use of mathematical methods stimulated the development of a statistical theory. Primarily focused on methodology, questionable proofs and neglected questions of priority, the book offers an intriguing resource for researchers in theoretical statistics, and can also serve as a textbook for advanced courses in statisticc.

The first part of the book is devoted to sampling theory (from one-dimensional and multidimensional distributions), asymptotic properties of sampling, parameter estimation, sufficient statistics, and statistical estimates. The second part is devoted to hypothesis testing and includes the discussion of families of statistical hypotheses that can be asymptotically distinguished. In particular, the author describes goodness-of-fit and sequential statistical criteria (Kolmogorov, Pearson, Smirnov, and Wald) and studies their main properties. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in mathematical statistics. It is useful for independent study or supplementaryreading.

Mason initiated their collaboration on the topics of this book while attending the CBMS-NSF Regional Confer ence at Texas A & M University in 1981. Independently of them, Sandor Cs6rgO and Lajos Horv~th have begun their work on this subject at Szeged University. The idea of writing a monograph together was born when the four of us met in the Conference on Limit Theorems in Probability and Statistics, Veszpr~m 1982. This collaboration resulted in No. 2 of Technical Report Series of the Laboratory for Research in Statistics and Probability of Carleton University and University of Ottawa, 1983. Afterwards David M. Mason has decided to withdraw from this project. The authors wish to thank him for his contributions. In particular, he has called our attention to the reverse martingale property of the empirical process together with the associated Birnbaum-Marshall inequality (cf.,the proofs of Lemmas 2.4 and 3.2) and to the Hardy inequality (cf. the proof of part (iv) of Theorem 4.1). These and several other related remarks helped us push down the 2 moment condition to EX

Offering an interdisciplinary presentation on the uses of stochastic methods, this publication discusses the practical applications of stochastic methods to such diverse areas as biology, chemistry, physics, mechanics and engineering. It also discusses computer implementation of theoretically derived algorithms especially for experimental designs.

Several surveytype articles (at the beginning and the end of the book) will be very usefulfor mathematicians who want to learn "what is going on" in some particularfield of research.
