Book excerpt: Determining how diversity is distributed through space and time is a fundamental goal of ecology. My research tested how speciesâ life-history traits structure diversity at landscape and broader scales and over time. I first asked how traits related to seed dispersal shape plant diversity in a naturally fragmented landscape by testing the relationship between diversity and patch characteristics (size and isolation) for species with different dispersal modes. Dispersal mode altered outcomes predicted from theory â while fragment isolation had a negative effect on wind-dispersed species, it did not influence the diversity of animal-dispersed species. I then examined how zooplankton traits (body size and dormancy) correlate with species distributions at a large scale using lakes across an 1800 km north-south gradient in western Canada. Despite predictions that body size should decrease with latitude and low temperatures, I found only weak evidence for any effect of latitude on inter- and intra- specific body size. Zooplankton dormancy dynamics are virtually impossible to test through sampling, yet dormancy underpins seasonal fluctuations in abundance and long term persistence, and it is expected to vary with climate. I therefore used an experimental approach to test how temperature and photoperiod affect hatching rates of dormant eggs from lakes across the latitudinal gradient. My results suggest that mismatches between temperature and photoperiod, as predicted to result from climate change, could drive latitude-dependent shifts in zooplankton emergence. Finally, I examined the temporal stability of diversity across the same latitudinal gradient by examining species colonization and extinction over 50 years. I found that low-latitude communities are increasingly diverse and comprised of small-bodied species despite more rapid temperature change at higher latitudes. Overall, my research has implications for how global changes, such as fragmentation and climate change, alter diversity by changing the viability of specific life-history strategies.

Book excerpt: More than a century after they emerged as central themes in ecology, community assembly and species coexistence remain rich areas of inquiry. Recent advances in coexistence theory and the development of new and powerful quantitative techniques have offered new insights into the varied processes shaping ecological communities. Here, I elucidate the processes driving community assembly in understory temperate forest plant communities. I first investigated how environmental conditions, functional traits, and phylogenetic relationships act together to influence plant distributions. Traits mediated plant distributions along environmental gradients, as expected, while phylogenetic relationships and niche differences had little effect on co-occurrence patterns. These findings reaffirm the importance of trait-mediated environmental sorting in determining plant distributions but call into question common assumptions about the roles of local niche differentiation and evolutionary history in plant community assembly. To build on this first project, I studied how two congeneric herbs, Hylodesmum glutinosum and H. nudiflorum manage to co-exist despite many similarities. Their broad-scale distributions reflect certain differences in morphology and physiology but there was little evidence of resource partitioning. Instead, patterns of co-occurrence and key demographic differences suggest equalizing processes that minimize competitive differences and life history tradeoffs promote local co-occurrence. I next examined local distributions of three forest herbs to understand the role of fine-scale environmental heterogeneity in structuring local plant distributions. These distributions matched a priori predictions based on differences in these species' morphology and physiology. Strong patterns of intraspecific spatial aggregation and heterospecific segregation coupled with limited dispersal capacity suggest these differential responses to fine-scale environmental variation could promote local coexistence among these species. Finally, I conducted an experiment to examine how plant-soil interactions influence herb growth. The effect of soil biota varied considerably among species providing evidence for both mutualistic and antagonistic interactions. These findings support the idea that plant-soil feedbacks play important but previously underappreciated roles in structuring herbaceous plant communities. Taken as a whole, my research illustrates how a diverse set of processes, operating at different rates and spatial scales, differentially affect various plant species to shape the overall distribution, abundance, and diversity of temperate forest herbs.

However, the frequency and the intensity of stress events have increased much during the last three decades because of climate change. Plants have developed, however, a multiplicity of modular and highly integrated strategies to cope with challenges imposed by novel, usually harsher environments. These strategies include migration, acclimation and adaptation. Twelve articles in this research topic exactly focus on the relative significance of these response mechanisms for the successful acclimation of plants to a wide range of novel environmental pressures. Four articles , additionally, explore how plants respond to severe stress conditions resulting from the concurrent action of multiple stressors. Ten articles mostly examine how morpho-anatomical, physiological and biochemical-related traits integrate when plants suffer from ‘novel’ threats, such as solid, gaseous, and electromagnetic pollutants. Suitable physiological indicators for developing conservation strategies are described in the last two works. This research topic highlights that bottom-up, as well as, top-down approaches will be necessary to develop in near future in the study of plants´ responses to environmental pressures.

Thus, it is important to quantify the key determinants of biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and ecological restoration of degraded plant communities in climate change sensitive ecosystems (i.e. subalpine and alpine meadow communities in Qinghai, tropical rainforests and tropical mountains). In this way, effective management, policy and methods can be developed to reduce the influence of climate change on these climate change sensitive ecosystems. The aforementioned human activities continue to destroy and degrade plant communities and ecosystem functioning. Climatic changes further exacerbate negative impacts and may trigger rapid loss of species, precipitate decline and changes in the flows of ecosystem goods and services. As the collective anthropogenic influence intensifies, some ecosystems may be more sensitive than others to these changes. Ecosystems that contribute greatly to human well-being through the delivery of biodiversity and ecosystem benefits should be the focus of particular concern. There are key knowledge gaps on the specific nature of anthropogenic impacts, species and ecosystem responses, and possible management and mitigation measures. Comprehensive documentation of these aspects from highly sensitive regions and ecosystems is urgently needed, particularly at fine scales, which is relevant for developing management and mitigation measures. Pathways such as ecological restoration can offset some of the impacts, but even quantifying the impacts of observed and anticipated changes is far from adequate and other mitigation measures must be considered.
