Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training of Teachers for Occupational Therapy for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Soldiers and Sailors A preliminary survey of the experience of the European nations since the beginning of the great war had convinced the board that it was necessary to develop facts from every source for the formulation of a broad and comprehensive plan for the restoration of men, handicapped as a direct outcome of their military em loyment, to useful industrial employment. This study aims, there ore, to build upon such information as was available before the war, to enrich and complete it with the abundant foreign experience gained since the war, and to anticipate the problems of demobilization which will far outlast the war itself and which will conserve in handicapped labor a resource Of great economic value. Rehabilitation, whether of the war or of industrial cripples, de pends to a large extent on the practice of occupational therapy dur ing convalescence. In the present moment of preparation the United States discovers at once the great need for occupational therapeutists and an e ually great shortage in the supply. It is the principal pur pose Oi t e study presented in this document to attempt to meet this situation, to Show what methods Europe, after costly experiment, has found to be the best, to outline courses for the emergency training of teachers, and to map out the essentials Of a complete national pro gram Of rehabilitation.
