Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have learned a lot from John Neu over the past years, and his book reflects very well his sense of style and purpose. --Walter Craig, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, Toronto, Ontario, Canada John Neu's book presents the basic ideas of fluid mechanics, and of the transport of matter, in a clear and reader-friendly way. Then it proposes a collection of problems, starting with easy ones and gradually leading up to harder ones. Each problem is solved with all the steps explained. In the course of solving these problems, many fundamental methods of analysis are introduced and explained. This is an ideal book for use as a text, or for individual study. --Joseph B. Keller, Stanford University This book presents elementary models of transport in continuous media and a corresponding body of mathematical technique. Physical topics include convection and diffusion as the simplest models of transport; local conservation laws with sources as the general framework of continuum mechanics; ideal fluid as the simplest model of a medium with mass; momentum and energy transport; and finally, free surface waves, in particular, shallow water theory. There is a strong emphasis on dimensional analysis and scaling. Some topics, such as physical similarity and similarity solutions, are traditional. In addition, there are reductions based on scaling, such as incompressible flow as a limit of compressible flow, and shallow water theory derived asymptotically from the full equations of free surface waves. More and deeper examples are presented as problems, including a series of problems that model a tsunami approaching the shore. The problems form an embedded subtext to the book. Each problem is followed by a detailed solution emphasizing process and craftsmanship. The problems express the practice of applied mathematics as the examination and re-examination of simple but essential ideas in many interrelated examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a thorough presentation of the phenomena related to the transport of mass, momentum and energy. It lays all the basic physical principles, then for the more advanced readers, it offers an in-depth treatment with advanced mathematical derivations and ends with some useful applications of the models and equations in specific settings. The important idea behind the book is to unify all types of transport phenomena, describing them within a common framework in terms of cause and effect, respectively represented by the driving force and the flux of the transported quantity. The approach and presentation are original in that the book starts with a general description of transport processes, providing the macroscopic balance relations of fluid dynamics and heat and mass transfer, before diving into the mathematical realm of continuum mechanics to derive the microscopic governing equations at the microscopic level. The book is a modular teaching tool and can be used either for an introductory or for an advanced graduate course. The last 6 chapters will be of interest to more advanced researchers who might be interested in particular applications in physics, mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering. All chapters are complemented with exercises that are essential to complete the learning process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a teachable and readable approach to transport phenomena (momentum, heat, and mass transport) by providing numerous examples and applications, which are particularly important to metallurgical, ceramic, and materials engineers. Because the authors feel that it is important for students and practicing engineers to visualize the physical situations, they have attempted to lead the reader through the development and solution of the relevant differential equations by applying the familiar principles of conservation to numerous situations and by including many worked examples in each chapter. The book is organized in a manner characteristic of other texts in transport phenomena. Section I deals with the properties and mechanics of fluid motion; Section II with thermal properties and heat transfer; and Section III with diffusion and mass transfer. The authors depart from tradition by building on a presumed understanding of the relationships between the structure and properties of matter, particularly in the chapters devoted to the transport properties (viscosity, thermal conductivity, and the diffusion coefficients). In addition, generous portions of the text, numerous examples, and many problems at the ends of the chapters apply transport phenomena to materials processing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, the density ?uctuation theory of transport coe?cients of simple and complex liquids is described together with the kinetic theory of liquids, the generic van der Waals equation of state, and the modi?ed free volume theory. The latter two theories are integral parts of the density ?- tuation theory, which enables us to calculate the density and temperature dependence of transport coe?cients of liquids from intermolecular forces. The terms nanoscience and bioscience are the catch phrases currently in fashion in science. It seems that much of the fundamentals remaining unsolved or poorly understood in the science of condensed matter has been overshadowed by the frenzy over the more glamorous disciplines of the former, shunned by novices, and are on the verge of being forgotten. The transport coe?cients of liquids and gases and related thermophysical properties of matter appear to be one such area in the science of macroscopic properties of molecular systems and statisticalmechanicsofcondensedmatter. Evennano-andbiomaterials,h- ever, cannot be fully and appropriately understood without ?rm grounding and foundations in the macroscopic and molecular theories of transport pr- ertiesandrelatedthermophysicalpropertiesofmatterinthecondensedphase. Oneisstilldealingwithsystemsmadeupofnotafewparticlesbutamultitude of them, often too many to count, to call them few-body problems that can be understoodwithoutthehelpofstatisticalmechanicsandmacroscopicphysics. In the density ?uctuation theory of transport coe?cients, the basic approach taken is quite di?erent from the approaches taken in the conventional kinetic theories of gases and liquids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic work by one of the world's foremost hydrologists presents a topic encountered in the many fields of science and engineering where flow through porous media plays a fundamental role. It is the standard work in the field, designed primarily for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of ground water hydrology, soil mechanics, soil physics, drainage and irrigation engineering, and petroleum and chemical engineering. It is highly recommended as well for scientists and engineers already working in these fields. Throughout this generously illustrated, richly detailed study, which includes a valuable section of exercises and answers, the emphasis is on understanding the phenomena occurring in porous media and on their macroscopic description. The book's chapter titles reveal its comprehensive coverage: Introduction, Fluids and Porous Matrix Properties, Pressures and Piezometric Head, The Fundamental Fluid Transport Equations in Porous Media, The Equation of Motion of a Homogeneous Fluid, Continuity and Conservation Equations for a Homogeneous Fluid, Solving Boundary and Initial Value Problems, Unconfined Flow and the Dupuit Approximation, Flow of Immiscible Fluids, Hydrodynamic Dispersion, and Models and Analogs. "Systematic and comprehensive . . . a book that satisfies the highest standards of excellence. . . . Will undoubtedly become the standard reference in this field." — R. Allen Freeze, IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Water Resources Research.

Book excerpt: Massey has long been a best-selling textbook. This extensively revised and updated eighth edition, like its predecessors, presents the basic principles of the mechanics of fluids in a thorough and clear manner. It provides the essential material for an honours degree course in civil or mechanical engineering, in addition to providing much relevant material for undergraduate courses in aeronautical and chemical engineering. Emphasis is given to a sound physical understanding of fluid flow and its engineering applications, rather than to mathematical techniques. Students are introduced systemati.
