Book excerpt: Within the framework of a Technical Assistance (TA) Agreement (UTF/NIR/066/NIR), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), provided technical support to the Federal Government of Nigeria to undertake a number of activities, which included land use/land cover analysis and production of an updated land cover/land use map for Nigeria. An existing national classification system, adopted by FORMECU in 1998, and comprising 36 classes was aggregated into 12 classes and used for this purpose. A land use/land cover map for 1995 based on the 12 classes was also produced. The land use/land cover analysis were undertaken in SEPAL and SEPAL-CEO (SEPAL-Collect Earth Online) which is an open-source, cloud-based platform. Map mosaics for 2006 and 2016 were produced from free Landsat images extracted from the SEPAL archives and classification was then undertaken to Collect Earth Online using the 12 aggregated land use/land cover classes. The procedure required the use of higher resolution images such as SPOT 5, GeoEye, and IKONOS images. A total of 1667 training data points were collected across the 12 land cover classes over the entire country. Fieldwork (ground-truthing) was carried out in six states to verify and clarify unresolved areas especially among savannas and arable land, tree crop plantation and forest plantation, freshwater forest and mangrove; and led to the collection of 252 additional training data points.

Book excerpt: Although the development of remote sensing techniques focuses greatly on construction of new sensors with higher spatial and spectral resolution, it is advisable to also use data of older sensors (especially, the LANDSAT-mission) when the historical mapping of land use/land cover and monitoring of their dynamics are needed. Using data from LANDSAT missions as well as from Terra (ASTER) Sensors, the authors shows in his book maps of historical land cover changes with a focus on agricultural irrigation projects. The kernel of this study was whether, how and to what extent applying the various remotely sensed data that were used here, would be an effective approach to classify the historical and current land use/land cover, to monitor the dynamics of land use/land cover during the last four decades, to map the development of the irrigation areas, and to classify the major strategic winter- and summer-irrigated agricultural crops in the study area of the Euphrates River Basin.

This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook presents the detailed steps for national agricultural land cover mapping, conducted with limited resources and budget from design to final validation and production. It covers the technical aspects of 1) selection and preprocess of satellite imagery (both optical and radar), 2) definition of a land cover legend using international standards, 3) the integration with other existing information as well as the analysis of such database in order to assign a thematic classification, 4) the interpretation, 5) the accuracy assessment and 6) the final packaging and publication of results. The handbook focuses on mapping agricultural land, in a complex landscape, such as the one found in Lao PDR, where atmospheric conditions, topographic effects and management makes the classification challenging. The handbook also presents practical examples of the team, software and skill-set required to develop a national land cover dataset. The objective of the document is to provide a working manual to other national teams willing to develop a land cover mapping programme.

Book excerpt: The “Sustainable Cropland and Forest Management in Priority Agro-ecosystems of Myanmar” Project of FAO in Myanmar is a five-year project (2016-2021) funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) and being jointly coordinated and implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MoNREC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation (MoALI). The project has supported establishment of a National CSA at Yezin Agriculture University in Myanmar. One of the key activities of the National CSA Center is to organize annual workshop/conference to share ideas, opportunities and challenges with regards to CSA and SLM and to discuss on the way forwards. Such workshops will focus on different themes of CSA and SLM every year. Accordingly, the first workshop was organized by the CSA Center at YAU on 14th Sep 2018 and the theme of this workshop was “Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture in Myanmar”. This proceeding presents the background of the project and workshop and compiles all the papers presented during the workshop.
