He cannot be led or controlled as can men in groups or close formations; hence he needs to be more thoroughly instructed in the part he is to play. This instruction cannot be given him on the field Of battle. The man who must steadily advance on an enemy in position requires not only higher training but higher discipline than one who does his fighting in close formation, or at long range and out of sight of the enemy and protected from hostile fire by steel shields. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of an Infantry Company This booklet has not been written for the use and benefit of officers and non-commissioned officers of long experience and proved skill in the profession of training men for battle. To such as these it may only provide an object of criticism, for in the course of years spent in turning recruits into trained soldiers they will have formulated to themselves, and adopted, some system of training which they found productive of the best results under their own guidance. But there are many at present, and at a future time, should certain circumstances arise in the life of the nation, there may be very many more who may not have such stores of experience to draw on, and yet may be faced with the problem of rapidly converting an untrained or only partially trained body of men into a force capable of acting successfully in real war, both in attack and defence against trained and disciplined troops. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infantry Training The precise movements of the manual of arms and close-order drill are not for the purpose of teaching men how to get about on the battle field. They will hardly be used there at all. One of the principal objects is to train the soldiers' minds and bodies to habits of precise, unhesitating obedience to the will of the leader, so that in the stress of battle they will obey without conscious effort, mechanically, automatically, as the easiest and most natural line of action. (t) School for clerks.0 )School for saddlers and cobblers. (k)Signal school.( )School for bandsmen and buglers. (m)School for hygiene and sanitation. Also such other schools as the division commander may deem necessary.4. In the training work at least 36 hours per week, exclusive of officers and non-commissioned officers schools, will be required. To be successful the interest of the men must be maintained. This can be done by giving variety to the work. Do not keep men too long at one thing; change to something else before they become bored. Long periods of place rest should not be permitted. Short periods of physical drill of various kinds should be interspersed, especially what is called recreationary games. At drills all officers should be present in so far as necessary to secure proper supervision. Superior officers should supervise the work of subordinates. Every mistake must be corrected and the men kept to their work. While this war has called into use new weapons and new methods it has not obviated the use and necessity of the old. Most of these new things can be quickly taught to soldiers otherwise trained. A few days are all that are required for most of them, and if training cannot be completed in the United States this part is the one to be left to be done abroad. The absolute essentials for all troops and what requires most time and care to impart and should be given before sailing are:1. Discipline.2. Physical efficiency, including marching.3. Combat efficiency, bayonet, rifle and musketry.4. Development of leadership in officers and non-commissioned officers.5. Development of cohesive action, maneuver, liaison, etc. (platoon to brigade).6. Training in specialties (open warfare).7. Tactics, open warfare (platoon to brigade). Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Procurement and Training of Ground Combat Troops The decision to prepare a comprehensive account of military activities was made early in the war. Trained historians were assigned to the larger units of the Army and War Department to initiate the work of research, analysis, and writing. The results of their work, supplemented by additional research in records not readily available during the war, are presented in this series. The general plan provides for a division into subseries dealing with the War Department, the Army Air, Ground, and Service Forces, the technical services, and the theaters of operations. This division conforms to the organization of the Army during World War II and, though involving some overlapping in subject matter, has the advantage of presenting a systematic account of developments in each major fieldof responsibility as well as the points of View of the particular commands. The plan also includes volumes on such topics as statistics, order of battle, military training, the Women's Army Corps, and other subjects that transcend the limits of studies focused on an agency or command. The whole project is oriented toward an eventual summary and synthesis. The studies in this volume were written during the war in the Historical Section of Headquarters, Army Ground Forces, where the authors had free access to the records and experience of the command. The Historical Division of the War Department has confined material changes to such additions of in formation, approved by the authors, as seemed necessary to round out the picture presented. The full and frank presentation of the wartime point of view of the Army Ground Forces, which has not been affected by the changes made, is regarded as one of the most valuable features of this particular series of studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training for the Trenches a Practical Handbook Since the Great European War broke out, printing presses have been busy producing text books, handbooks and guides for soldiers. Military authorities and civilians alike have come to realise that this war has changed many of our old conceptions of strategy and that it has introduced conditions that are entirely unprecedented. New methods have had to be devised - sometimes on the field itself in the midst of the greatest difficulties - for meeting new and novel methods of warfare. Every deadly engine of destruction has called forth some new invention to cope with it. Soldiers have had to live and fight under conditions that to the lay mind, or to the mind of the military men of a few years ago, would seem to be impossible. It is reasonable to assume that the inventive genius of the world will be turned more and more in the direction of the problem of how to construct still more terrible machines of destruction.
