Book excerpt: High-fidelity virtual simulators and constructive simulations located in the District of Columbia Mesa, AZ; and Crawley, England were linked over commercial communications lines (Internet and Integrated Services Digital Network) using Distributed Interactive Simulation protocols. This distributed simulation network supported relatively complex mission scenarios that were flown repeatedly over a period of three days. This experiment demonstrated the capability of existing technology to support international Distributed Mission Training (DMT), enabled the engineering community to document the performance that technology, and identified specific technological limitations. It also enabled the operational and training communities to evaluate the potential utility of DMT for coalition training. The data collected and the lessons learned in this demonstration will help enhance the technical performance of DMT and reduce the time and expense required to develop an international DMT capability.

Book excerpt: Previous research on Distributed Mission Training (DMT) shows that pilots and Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) weapons directors rate DMT as highly effective for training multiship, multibogey air combat. DMT exercises were also used as opportunities for pilots participating in Flight Lead Upgrade (FLUG) training to gain experience in planning, briefing, leading, and debriefing 4-ship missions in an intensive air-to-air threat environment. We describe a four-phase research program at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Warfighter Training Research Division (AFRL/HEA) in Apr 99 to assess the effectiveness of using DMT to augment FLUG training. We reviewed training records at one F-16 base to identify 4-ship FLUG missions that would benefit most from DMT experience and establish baseline rates for sorties repeated due to noneffective upgrading pilot proficiency. A 5-day DMT-FLUG protocol was developed targeting these missions. DMT-FLUG training exercises were conducted over one year. During these exercises, upgrading pilots led several missions of increasing complexity using the AFRL 4-ship DMT testbed in Mesa AZ with AWACS weapons controllers from AFRL s research facility at Brooks AFB TX. We assessed transfer to aircraft training through review of training records and interviews with both upgrading pilots and their instructors. Eight out of 12 upgrading pilots participating in DMT-FLUG successfully completed the program without any repeated missions, one pilot repeated one mission, two transferred out of fighters, and one pilot was still in training. We discuss pilots and AWACS weapons directors performance within DMT and identify mission tasks most appropriate for DMT.

Book excerpt: The current work reports only the objective data from AFRL-HE-AZ-TR-2006-0015, Volume I, Distributed Mission Operations Within-Simulator Training Effectiveness: Summary Report, but here we expand the reporting of objective data both in depth and breadth. We examined F-16 pilots participating in week-long Distributed Mission Operation (DMO) training exercises and compared extensive computer-collected data between beginning-of-week and end-of-week pilot performance on mirror-image scenarios. The DMO research environment in Mesa, AZ consisted of four high-fidelity F-16 simulators and one high-fidelity Airborne Warning and Control System simulator. Participating F-16 teams flew over 40 total scenarios according to a five-day syllabus, book-ended on Monday and Friday by mirror-image point defense air combat benchmark scenarios. Seven mission outcome measures were found to be significantly better on Friday than Monday: A 58.33% decrease in enemy strikers reaching their target, 38.10% greater distance from the base the F-16s disposed of the strikers, 54.77% fewer F-16 mortalities, 75.26% more enemy striker kills (before reaching base), 6.82% higher proportion of Viper Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) shots resulting in a kill, 51.60% lower proportion of enemy Alamo missile shots resulting in a kill, and a highly impressive 314.21% increase in an overall summary scoring scheme developed by subject matter experts. Significant trends were also found for a number of other metrics assessing skills. Of all the measures investigated in the current work, not a single offensive/defensive trade-off was observed, which significantly strengthens our conclusion that significant within-simulator learning took place.

Book excerpt: To provide an indirect assessment of learning for the overall Distributed Mission Operations (DMO) Within Simulator Training Effectiveness Baseline Study as described in Volume I, Summary Report, of AFRL-HE-AZ-TR-2006-0015, the current work examined pilots who participated in a Pathfinder data collection methodology both before and after five days of DMO training. The Pathfinder methodology is a qualitative/quantitative method that can be used to assess if the pilots' underlying knowledge structures (i.e., their understanding) of air combat may have changed significantly as a function of DMO training. A total of 144 F-16 pilots rated the relatedness of 105 pairs of air combat concepts. Analyzing the before/after DMO training Pathfinder results by flight qualification or Viper flight position revealed remarkably similar results across all matrices. The most remarkable attribute of these networks is their stability; the pilots, regardless of demographic classification or before/after DMO training, view the relationships between the air combat concepts in very similar ways. We postulate that the stability of the networks most likely indicates that the 15 chosen concepts are at a high level of abstraction and reflect the shared knowledge in the general F-16 pilot population. As such, the concepts are likely not sensitive enough (i.e., detailed enough) to reflect differences in understanding resulting from five days of DMO training.

Book excerpt: The increasingly complex environment of the 21st century demands unprecedented knowledge, skills and abilities for people from all walks of life. One powerful solution that blends the science of learning with the technological advances of computing is Virtual Environments. In the United States alone, the Department of Defense has invested billions of dollars over the past decade to make this field and its developments as effective as possible. This 3-volume work provides, for the first time, comprehensive coverage of the many different domains that must be integrated for Virtual Environments to fully provide effective training and education. The first volume is dedicated to a thorough understanding of learning theory, requirements definition and performance measurement, providing insight into the human-centric specifications the VE must satisfy to succeed. Volume II provides the latest information on VE component technologies, and Volume III offers discussion of an extensive collection of integrated systems presented as VE use-cases, and results of effectiveness evaluation studies. The text includes emerging directions of this evolving technology, from cognitive rehabilitation to the next generation of museum exhibitions. Finally, the handbook offers a glimpse into the future with this fascinating technology. This groundbreaking set will interest students, scholars and researchers in the fields of military science, technology, computer science, business, law enforcement, cognitive psychology, education and health. Topics addressed include guidance and interventions using VE as a teaching tool, what to look for in terms of human-centered systems and components, and current training uses in the Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines. Game-based and long distance training are explained, as are particular challenges such as the emergence of VE sickness. Chapters also highlight the combination of VE and cybernetics, robotics and artificial intelligence.
