Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the seventeenth century, Spanish lyric underwent a notable development. Several Spanish poets reinvented lyric as a melancholy and masculinist discourse that sang of and perpetrated symbolic violence against the female beloved. This shift emerged in response to the rising prestige and commercial success of the epic and was enabled by the rich discourse on the link between melancholy and creativity in men. In The Melancholy Void Felipe Valencia examines this reconstruction of the lyric in key texts of Spanish poetry from 1580 to 1620. Through a study of canonical and influential texts, such as the major poems by Luis de Góngora and the epic of Alonso de Ercilla, but also lesser-known texts, such as the lyrics by Miguel de Cervantes, The Melancholy Void addresses four understudied problems in the scholarship of early modern Spanish poetry: the use of gender violence in love poetry as a way to construct the masculinity of the poetic speaker; the exploration in Spanish poetry of the link between melancholy and male creativity; the impact of epic on Spanish lyric; and the Spanish contribution to the fledgling theory of the lyric. The Melancholy Void brings poetry and lyric theory to the conversation in full force and develops a distinct argument about the integral role of gender violence in a prominent strand of early modern Spanish lyric that ran from Garcilaso to Góngora and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elcor Vincent Aragundi lived his career as a professional racing jockey, but as a native from Ecuador born in Quito, he was first inspired with poetry by his mother when he was still a boy. Between then and the moment he had grown, he began to write poetry in Spanish when he was still in school. He continued to write through the years even after he came to the United States back in March of 1954. Not knowing a word of English when he stepped off the plane in Florida, he ended up getting lost at a bus stop to eat. He returned unable to match the bus he was on with that of the number he held. The bus driver had unknowingly left without him. It took two hours before they could find someone that would translate. English has always been a huge struggle for him, though he desperately wanted to learn. It at times would leave him frustrated from the defied opportunities from his inability to communicate and adapt into the language. That was then; now a proud American citizen celebrating his fifty-fifth year in the United States, he is a renowned poet with trophies, medals, and merits awarded to him for his work, his passion, and his art. Recognized by the International Society of Poets in Owings Mills, Maryland, “A Flight in the Night” was published back in 2002 by the International Library of Poetry. He has been writing in English now for twenty-five years. With over a hundred poems written, half of them reside in Spanish, and the other half in English. His work is not only a milestone but an inspiration of the heart that proves yet that nothing can stand in the way of his love for poetry.

Book excerpt: Emphasizing the resilience of theatre arts in the midst of significant political change, Theatre After Empire spotlights the emergence of new performance styles in the wake of collapsed political systems. Centering on theatrical works from the late nineteenth century to the present, twelve original essays written by prominent theatre scholars showcase the development of new work after social revolutions, independence campaigns, the overthrow of monarchies, and world wars. Global in scope, this book features performances occurring across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The essays attend to a range of live events—theatre, dance, and performance art—that stage subaltern experiences and reveal societies in the midst of cultural, political, and geographic transition. This collection is an engaging resource for students and scholars of theatre and performance; world history; and those interested in postcolonialism, multiculturalism, and transnationalism.
