Book Synopsis Traffic Sign Conspicuity by : Antoine Bricker
Download or read book Traffic Sign Conspicuity written by Antoine Bricker and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book may be of use to traffic engineers and researchers who are concerned with the conspicuity of traffic signs. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices advises that, "Signs should be placed on the right side of the roadway where they are easily recognised and understood by road users". Guidance is provided on the spacing and prioritisation of signs, and in some conditions, additional steps may be needed to ensure that signs are conspicuous. This book also provides federal regulations that have been put in place to ensure that traffic signs are visible at night, and discusses impacts on state and local agencies of maintaining traffic sign retroreflectivity.

Download or read book Traffic Operational Impacts of Higher-conspicuity Sign Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers examined the impacts of various higher-conspicuity sign materials on traffic operations and behavior. A total of eight applications of microprismatic materials were evaluated: fluorescent yellow Chevrons, fluorescent yellow Chevron posts, fluorescent yellow Curve signs, fluorescent yellow Ramp Speed signs, fluorescent yellow Stop Ahead signs, fluorescent red Stop signs, flashing red light emitting diodes (LED) Stop signs, and a red border on Speed Limit signs. Researchers installed these signs at locations where it was believed that improving sign conspicuity would provide a statistically significant benefit to safety-related traffic operations. Traffic operations data collected before and after the sign upgrades included vehicle speeds, edge line encroachments, and stopping compliance.
Book Synopsis Improving the Conspicuity of Trailblazing Signs for Incident Management by : Julia A. Barker
Download or read book Improving the Conspicuity of Trailblazing Signs for Incident Management written by Julia A. Barker and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report represents efforts to design and evaluate a new sign design for emergency route trailblazing in a two-part series. Study was an off-road field experiment conducted to determine the best sign color combination, letter stroke width, and letter size for the emergency sign. Based upon the results of that first study, three color combinations were chosen for testing (black on coral, black on light blue, and yellow on purple) against a baseline color combination of black on orange. The test signs to be further tested featured D series, 125-mm (5 in) height letters. Study 2 was conducted using an instrumented vehicle and survey questionnaire through a construction zone-related detour. The independent variables of interest were sign color combination, age, and visibility condition. The findings of Study 2 indicated that use of a color combination other than the traditional orange background with a black legend will improve driver performance and safety when used for trailblazing during critical incidents. Based on the conclusions and other anecdotal evidence, the following recommendations were made: 1. Do not use a black on orange sign for trailblazing around a critical incident if an existing detour/construction zone is in place. 2. Do not use a black on coral sign for trailblazing around a critical incident. 3. A black on light blue sign is recommended due to its generally favorable subjective ratings and for minimization of the number of turn errors made by drivers in an overlapping detour. 4. Despite recommendation 3, it is important to note that the black on light blue sign fades to take on the appearance of a regulatory sign when headlights reflect onto it. 5. If the black on light blue sign is deemed inappropriate due to its appearance as a regulatory sign at night, consider using the yellow on purple color combination. In this study, the yellow on purple sign color combination resulted in fewer turn errors than black on orange and it was generally rated favorably by drivers, especially younger drivers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ubiquitous nature of transport signs on roadways, railways, and in airports can lead to an overload of visual information, yet little research has been done to understand the design and use of such signs from a driver‘s perspective. The Human Factors of Transport Signs explores key transport sign research and examines new technologies

Book Synopsis Traffic control device conspicuity by : Vaughan W. Inman
Download or read book Traffic control device conspicuity written by Vaughan W. Inman and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conspicuity of a traffic control device (TCD) is defined as the probability that the device will be noticed. However, there is no agreed-upon measure of what constitutes being noticed. Various measures have been suggested, including eye fixations, recall, and verbal reports. Four conspicuity studies are discussed in this report. It has been observed that conspicuity is not solely a property of a TCD but must include consideration of the surrounding environment. The first of the studies described in this report used multidimensional scaling (MDS) to identify factors that characterize drivers' perceptions of TCD environments. The MDS study revealed that two dimensions, clutter and predictability, characterized the roadway environments included in the study. In the second study, drivers' eye glances to TCDs were recorded on a 34-mi (55-km) drive. After passing selected TCDs, drivers' recall of the TCD was assessed by asking them to identify it. That study showed that warning signs are seldom glanced at and only about half of them are recalled just 2 s after they are passed. About 20 percent of speed limit signs received glances, but drivers were aware of the posted speed limit about 80 percent of the time. The third study examined drivers' ability to detect speed limit and warning signs. The ability to detect speed limit signs, as measured by conspicuity angle, was degraded by cluttered backgrounds. However, the detectability of fluorescent yellow-green warning signs was not affected by background clutter. The fourth study examined the effect of background environment on drivers' ability to read TCDs. Background had no effect on speed limit sign readability and had a small effect on warning sign readability. Recommendations for enhancing the conspicuity of regulatory signs are proposed.
