Forecasts inform discussions about whether, when, how, and where to invest public resources to manage traffic flow, widen and remodel existing facilities, and where to locate, align, and how to size new ones. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Report 934: Traffic Forecasting Accuracy Assessment Research seeks to develop a process and methods by which to analyze and improve the accuracy, reliability, and utility of project-level traffic forecasts. The report also includes tools for engineers and planners who are involved in generating traffic forecasts, including: Quantile Regression Models, a Traffic Accuracy Assessment, a Forecast Archive Annotated Outline, a Deep Dive Annotated Outline, and Deep Dive Assessment Tables.
Book Synopsis Traffic Flow Forecasting for Intelligent Transportation Systems by : Brian L. Smith
Download or read book Traffic Flow Forecasting for Intelligent Transportation Systems written by Brian L. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capability to forecast traffic volume in an operational setting has been identified as a critical need for intelligent transportation systems (ITS). In particular, traffic volume forecasts will directly support proactive traffic control and accurate travel time estimation. However, previous attempts to develop traffic volume forecasting models have met with limited success. This research focused on developing such models for two sites on the Capital Beltway in Northern Virginia. Four models were developed and tested for the single-interval forecasting problem, which is defined as estimating traffic flow 15 min into the future. The four models were the historical average, time series, neural network, and nonparametric regression models. The nonparametric regression model significantly outperformed the others. Based on its success on the single-interval forecasting problem, the nonparametric regression approach was used to develop and test a model for the multiple-interval forecasting problem. This problem is defined as estimating traffic flow for a series of time periods into the future in 15-min intervals. The model performed well in this application. In general, the model was portable, accurate, and easy to deploy in a field environment. Finally, an ITS system architecture was developed to take full advantage of the forecasting capability. The architecture illustrates the potential for significantly improved ITS services with enhanced analysis components, such as traffic volume forecasting.

Book Synopsis Traffic Data Collection and Analysis by : Alexander French
Download or read book Traffic Data Collection and Analysis written by Alexander French and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1986 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to traffic engineers, highway planners, and others concerned with the collection of traffic data for traffic engineering studies, for long-range planning, and for evaluation of traffic law enforcement. Information is presented on current practice in traffic data collection and analysis. Although types of highway traffic data collected over the past 50 years have not changed significantly, the quantities, analysis procedure, and presentations of these data have changed as a result of changing policies, operational concerns, and capabilities resulting from new technologies. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the technology (both hardware and software) that is being used for traffic data collection, and discusses technological advances that have not yet been applied to the acquisition and presentation of traffic data.

Book excerpt: "This document presents a weather module for the traffic analysis tools program. It provides traffic engineers, transportation modelers and decisions makers with a guide that can incorporate weather impacts into transportation system analysis and modeling. The module describes how users can implement weather analysis using mesoscopic or microscopic traffic simulation modeling tools. It also includes weather and traffic data sources and discusses various weather responsive traffic operations and management strategies."--Technical report documentation page.

Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 765: Analytical Travel Forecasting Approaches for Project-Level Planning and Design describes methods, data sources, and procedures for producing travel forecasts for highway project-level analyses. This report provides an update to NCHRP Report 255: Highway Traffic Data for Urbanized Area Project Planning and Design. In addition to the report, Appendices A through I from the contractor's final report are available on CRP-CD-143. These appendices supplement this report by providing a substantial amount of companion data and information. The appendices also include the extended literature review, the detailed NCHRP Report 255 review, supplementary tables, a list of defined acronyms, and a glossary. Also included on CRP-CD-143 are spreadsheet demonstrations, and, for reference purposes, a tool developed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation to assess annual average daily traffic."--Publisher's description.
Book Synopsis Traffic Analysis Tools and Methods by : Cassandra Berry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entering the 21st century, the Nation's transportation system has matured; it only expands its infrastructure by a fraction of a percentage each year. However, congestion continues to grow at an alarming rate, adversely impacting our quality of life and increasing the potential for accidents and long delays. These are expected to escalate, calling for transportation professionals to increase the productivity of existing transportation systems through the use of operational improvements. In order to assess the potential effectiveness of a particular strategy, it must be analyzed using traffic analysis tools or methodologies. The objective of this book is to assist traffic engineers, planners, and traffic operations professionals in the selection of the correct type of traffic analysis tool for operational improvements.
