Download or read book Traffic Safety Reform in the United States and Great Britain written by Jerome S. Legge and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, there has been a renewed concern with highway safety, reflected in wide media coverage and new laws aimed at reducing highway deaths and injuries. Legge examines three initiatives that have been studied only in isolation: stricter drinking-age laws, mandated use of seat belts, and deterrents to drunk driving. His research covers three large industrial states-New York, California, and Michigan, as well as Great Britain, each of which uses a different mix of these initiatives. Using a combination of theory and research methodology, Legge tests a number of models on how traffic fatalities might be reduced and offers valuable suggestions for policy makers, researchers, and activists.

Download or read book Britain on the Edge of Europe written by Michael Chisholm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the consolidation of the European Union and the opening of the Channel Tunnel, how can Britain develop a central place in Europe and ensure its future prosperity? Britain on the Edge of Europe describes Britain's post-war involvement with the continent amd assesses the country's chances of enjoying the benefits of the projected European boom. Analysing the economic and political effects of Britain's edge-location, the author challenges orthodox notions of distance, cost and competitiveness and assumptions about the likely regional impact on Britain. At a time when British expectations of Europe are very much in the balance, Britain on the Edge of Europe puts the country's trade position into perspective.

Book Synopsis The Technical Development of Roads in Britain by : Graham West
Download or read book The Technical Development of Roads in Britain written by Graham West and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. The history of roads in Great Britain has not been one of steady development, but rather, one that has waxed and waned in response to social, military and economic needs, and also as to whether there have been alternative methods of transport available. Paralleling this, the technical aspects of road construction - with the one great exception of Roman roads - can be seen as a fitful progression of improvement followed by neglect as the roadmaker has responded, albeit tardily on occasion, to the needs of the road user. This text describes the technical development of British roads in relation to the needs of the time, and thereby touches upon its relation to the history of the country more generally.
