Book excerpt: This book describes, analyzes, and recommends traffic engineering (TE) and quality of service (QoS) optimization methods for integrated voice/data dynamic routing networks. These functions control a network's response to traffic demands and other stimuli, such as link failures or node failures. TE and QoS optimization is concerned with measurement, modeling, characterization, and control of network traffic, and the application of techniques to achieve specific performance objectives. The scope of the analysis and recommendations include dimensioning, call/flow and connection routing, QoS resource management, routing table management, dynamic transport routing, and operational requirements. Case studies are included which provide the reader with a concrete way into the technical details and highlight why and how to use the techniques described in the book. Includes Case Studies of MPLS and GMPLS Network Optimization Presents state-of-the-art traffic engineering and quality of service optimization methods and illustrates the tradeoffs between the various methods discussed Contains practical Case Studies based on large-scale service provider implementations and architecture plans Written by a highly respected and well known active expert in traffic engineering and quality of service

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: QoS, short for "quality of service, is one of the most important goals a network designer or administrator will have. Ensuring that the network runs at optimal precision with data remaining accurate, traveling fast, and to the correct user are the main objectives of QoS. The various media that fly across the network including voice, video, and data have different idiosyncrasies that try the dimensions of the network. This malleable network architecture poses an always moving potential problem for the network professional. The authors have provided a comprehensive treatise on this subject. They have included topics such as traffic engineering, capacity planning, and admission control. This book provides real world case studies of QoS in multiservice networks. These case studies remove the mystery behind QoS by illustrating the how, what, and why of implementing QoS within networks. Readers will be able to learn from the successes and failures of these actual working designs and configurations. - Helps readers understand concepts of IP QoS by presenting clear descriptions of QoS components, architectures, and protocols - Directs readers in the design and deployment of IP QoS networks through fully explained examples of actual working designs - Contains real life case studies which focus on implementation

Book excerpt: Best-practice QoS designs for protecting voice, video, and critical data while mitigating network denial-of-service attacks Understand the service-level requirements of voice, video, and data applications Examine strategic QoS best practices, including Scavenger-class QoS tactics for DoS/worm mitigation Learn about QoS tools and the various interdependencies and caveats of these tools that can impact design considerations Learn how to protect voice, video, and data traffic using various QoS mechanisms Evaluate design recommendations for protecting voice, video, and multiple classes of data while mitigating DoS/worm attacks for the following network infrastructure architectures: campus LAN, private WAN, MPLS VPN, and IPSec VPN Quality of Service (QoS) has already proven itself as the enabling technology for the convergence of voice, video, and data networks. As business needs evolve, so do the demands for QoS. The need to protect critical applications via QoS mechanisms in business networks has escalated over the past few years, primarily due to the increased frequency and sophistication of denial-of-service (DoS) and worm attacks. End-to-End QoS Network Design is a detailed handbook for planning and deploying QoS solutions to address current business needs. This book goes beyond discussing available QoS technologies and considers detailed design examples that illustrate where, when, and how to deploy various QoS features to provide validated and tested solutions for voice, video, and critical data over the LAN, WAN, and VPN. The book starts with a brief background of network infrastructure evolution and the subsequent need for QoS. It then goes on to cover the various QoS features and tools currently available and comments on their evolution and direction. The QoS requirements of voice, interactive and streaming video, and multiple classes of data applications are presented, along with an overview of the nature and effects of various types of DoS and worm attacks. QoS best-practice design principles are introduced to show how QoS mechanisms can be strategically deployed end-to-end to address application requirements while mitigating network attacks. The next section focuses on how these strategic design principles are applied to campus LAN QoS design. Considerations and detailed design recommendations specific to the access, distribution, and core layers of an enterprise campus network are presented. Private WAN QoS design is discussed in the following section, where WAN-specific considerations and detailed QoS designs are presented for leased-lines, Frame Relay, ATM, ATM-to-FR Service Interworking, and ISDN networks. Branch-specific designs include Cisco® SAFE recommendations for using Network-Based Application Recognition (NBAR) for known-worm identification and policing. The final section covers Layer 3 VPN QoS design-for both MPLS and IPSec VPNs. As businesses are migrating to VPNs to meet their wide-area networking needs at lower costs, considerations specific to these topologies are required to be reflected in their customer-edge QoS designs. MPLS VPN QoS design is examined from both the enterprise and service provider's perspectives. Additionally, IPSec VPN QoS designs cover site-to-site and teleworker contexts. Whether you are looking for an introduction to QoS principles and practices or a QoS planning and deployment guide, this book provides you with the expert advice you need to design and implement comprehensive QoS solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern communication network can be described as a large, complex, distributed system composed by higher interoperating, smaller sub-systems. Today, the proliferation and convergence of different types of wired, wireless, and mobile networks are crucial for the success of the next generation networking. However, these networks can hardly meet the requirements of future integrated-service networks, and are expected to carry multimedia traffic with various Quality of Experience (QoE) and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Providing all relevant QoS/QoE issues in these heterogeneous networks is then an important challenge for telecommunication operators, manufacturers, and companies. The impressive emergence and the important demand of the rising generation of real-time Multi-service (such as Data, Voice VoD, Video-Conference, etc.) over communication heterogeneous networks, require scalability while considering a continuous QoS. This book presents and explains all the techniques in new generation networks which integrate efficient global control mechanisms in two directions: (1) maintain QoS requirements in order to maximize network resources utilization, and minimize operational costs on all the types of wired-wireless-mobile networks used to transport traffic, and (2) mix the QoS associated with home, access, and core networks in order to provide Quality of Service/Quality of Experience expected by users of new services.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper considers a model of an integrated voice and data network. The model, which lends itself to analytic and algorithmic solution, is formulated as a convex optimization problem. The objective function comprises two types of functions: the congestion cost functions and the rate limitation functions. The congestion cost functions act to limit the average traffic entering into the network to values that would not cause network congestion. The rate limitation functions ensure that all conversations are fairly treated. The model can be generalized to solve problems of networks which handle n types of traffic that have different levels of delay sensitivity, where n> or = 2. A joint flow control and routing algorithm is constructed which uses short term average information on the network utilization to set the voice packet lengths and data input rates, and to determine the routes for each conversation. The voice packet lengths and data input rates are set in such a way as to achieve an optimal tradeoff between each user's satisfaction and the cost of network congestion. Additional protocols are specified for dealing with such issues as congestion avoidance and control, and for implementing flow control on a more dynamic basis than the quasi-static joint flow control and routing algorithm can handle.

In this model the network flow problem is formulated as a convex optimization problem. The objective function comprises two types of cost functions: the congestion cost functions, which limit the average input traffic to values compatible with the network conditions; and the rate limitation cost functions, which ensure that all conversations are fairly treated.
