It shares many tips and insights about sustainable solutions for the issues facing transport systems, innovative digital technologies, and ICT trends. The book touches upon the need to integrate the three fields of Architecture, Engineering, and Technology that have become indispensable. This is intended to respond to the increasing human needs and population growth in cities on one hand and to develop a holistic approach that helps overcome challenges to sustainability and environment management on the other hand. With the power of engineering in practice, problems of design and development once considered too complex to be dealt with other than empirically, intuitively, or by trial and error, are now becoming more solvable and applicable. This book offers strategies and solutions that enable designers to bring together knowledge in the fields of architecture, engineering, and technology to overcome challenges facing in modern times.

This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The values of equivalent single axle loads (ESAL) have been used to represent the vehicle loads in pavement design. To improve the pavement design procedures, a new method, called the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG), has been developed to use the axle load spectra to represent the vehicle loads in pavement design. These spectra represent the percentage of the total axle applications within each load interval for single, tandem, tridem, and quad axles. Using axle load spectra as the traffic input, the MEPDG method is able to analyze the impacts of varying traffic loads on pavement and provide an optimal pavement structure design. In addition, the new method can be used to analyze the effects of materials and the impacts of seasons, to compare rehabilitation strategies, and to perform forensic analyses of pavement conditions. The MEPDG utilizes mechanistic-empirical approaches to realistically characterize inservice pavements and allows the full integration of vehicular traffic loadings, climatic features, soil characteristics, and paving materials properties into the detailed analysis of pavement structural behaviors and the resulting pavement performance. In order to provide the traffic data input required by the MEPDG, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) made an effort to obtain truck traffic information from the traffic data collected through weigh-in-motion (WIM) stations. This study was conducted to create the truck traffic spectra and other traffic inputs for INDOT to implement the new pavement design method. Furthermore, the INDOT AADT data were used in this study to analyze the spatial distributions of the traffic volumes in Indiana and to obtain the spatial distributions of traffic volumes.

Book excerpt: This book presents new studies dealing with the attempts made by the scientists and practitioners to address contemporary issues in pavement engineering such as aging and modification of asphalt binders, performance evaluation of warm mix asphalt, and mechanical-based pavement structure analysis, etc.. Asphalt binder and mixture have been widely used to construct flexible pavements. Mechanical and Chemical characterizations of asphalt materials and integration of these properties into pavement structures and distresses analysis are of great importance to design a sustainable flexible pavement. This book includes discusses and new results dealing with these issues. Papers were selected from the 5th GeoChina International Conference 2018 – Civil Infrastructures Confronting Severe Weathers and Climate Changes: From Failure to Sustainability, held on July 23 to 25, 2018 in HangZhou, China.

Book excerpt: "Highway agencies across the nation are moving towards implementation of the new AASHTO Mechanistic- Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) for pavement design. The objective of this project was to implement the MEPDG into the daily operations of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). The implementation of the MEPDG as a UDOT standard required modifications in some UDOT pavement design protocols (i.e., lab testing procedures, equipment, and protocols, traffic data reporting, software issues, design output interpretation, and others). A key requirement is validation of the MEPDG's nationally calibrated pavement distress and smoothness prediction models when applied under Utah conditions and performing local calibration if needed. This was accomplished using data from Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) projects located in Utah and UDOT pavement management system (PMS) pavement sections. The nationally calibrated MEPDG models were evaluated. With the exception of the new hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement total rutting model, all other models were found to be reasonable. The rutting model was locally calibrated to increase goodness of fit and remove significant bias. Due to the nature of the data used in model validation, it is recommended that further MEPDG model validation be accomplished in the future using a database that contains HMA pavement and jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) exhibiting moderate to severe deterioration. This report represents Phase II of the UDOT MEPDG implementation study and builds on the Phase I study report completed in 2005 for UDOT. The Draft User's Guide for UDOT Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design (UDOT Research Report No. UT-09.11a, dated October 2009) incorporates the findings of this report as inputs and pavement design guidelines for Utah for use by UDOT's pavement design engineers during trial implementation of the MEPDG"--Technical report documentation p.
