Book excerpt: This report summarizes research on traffic barrier performance conducted by New York from 1983 through 1987, which concentrated on 1) development of height standards and tolerances for light-post barriers, 2) barrier performance related to vehicle characteristics, 3) development of an economic model to compare median barrier costs, and 4) effects of curbs on barrier performance. Accident data were obtained for approximately 3300 accidents occurring between July 1, 1982 and June 30, 1983. Of these, about 1700 were at light-post barrier sites.

Book excerpt: "The Roadside Design Guide presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside safety and is written in dual units-metric and U.S. Customary. This book is a guide. It is not a standard, nor is it a design policy. It is intended to use as a resource document from which individual highway agencies can develop standards and policies. Although much of the material in the guide can be considered universal in its application, several recommendations are subjective in nature and may need modification to fit local conditions. However, it is important that significant deviations from the guide be based on operational experience and objective analysis. The 2011 edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide has been updated to include hardware that has met the evaluation criteria contained in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features and begins to detail the most current evaluation criteria contained under the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware, 2009 (MASH). For the most part, roadside hardware tested and accepted under older guidelines that are no longer applicable has not been excluded in this edition." -- AASHTO website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judicious application of current state-of-the-art information on traffic barriers should result in safer highways. traffic barriers, as defined herein, consist of (1) longitudinal systems, such as guardrails, median barriers, and bridge rails; and (2) crash cushion systems, such as a nest of steel drums. The report is directed primarily for use by highway designers as a guide and by maintenance groups as an aid in upgrading existing installations. Traffic barrier systems evaluated by full-scale crash tests and satisfactory service performance are presented, together with a selection procedure.

This book examines both the acoustic and landscape issues affecting the design of barriers. By addressing the needs of the whole design team, it provides expert guidance on good practice and highlights the pitfalls of poor design. Detailed consideration is given to materials, engineering, legal and environmental issues as well as the health and social impacts of noise barriers. Environmental Noise Barriers is a unique one-step reference for practitioners, be they acoustic engineers, landscape architects or manufacturers and for highways departments in local and central authorities. * illustrates the wide variety of design solutions for different acoustic and landscape situations in several European countries * contains a generous range of full colour photographs * provides information on manufacturers, products and services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road barriers have been used as an effective countermeasure to prevent exposure of errant vehicles to both vehicles travelling in the opposite direction and to roadside hazards. The objective of this study was to evaluate the in-service safety performance of three types of road barriers (concrete barriers, steel W-beam guardrails, and high-tension cable barriers) in Indiana using cross-sectional analysis based on crash data. The quantitative evaluation was comprised of three components: 1) the effect of the road, barrier scenarios, and traffic on the barrier-relevant (BR) crash frequency, 2) the effect of the road and the barrier scenarios on the BR harmful events, and 3) the effect of the BR events and other conditions on the injury outcomes. The introduction of the BR harmful events linked the crash onset with its outcome. The three developed statistical models were connected through their inputs-outputs and followed the sequence of various BR events during the BR crash. This improvement allowed a more comprehensive and insightful analysis of the barriers' safety effects and a more efficient use of data. The injury outcomes were estimated for all the individuals in a crash rather than for the most severe outcome of a crash. Further improvement of the cost estimates was accomplished by utilizing hospital data. For median barriers, this study found that the total number of BR crashes was higher with the use of median barriers, mostly due to the introduction of collisions with barriers and an increase in the collisions after redirecting vehicles back to traffic. These undesirable effects of barriers were surpassed by the positive results of reducing hazardous events such as cross-median crashes, rollover events, and collisions with roadside hazards, which substantially reduced the number of severe injuries and fatalities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This roadside safety design package has been developed to satisfy a need for training in this area. It is hoped that all persons involved in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of highways will become familiar with the concepts contained in the program. The concepts and practices discussed come from those contained in the AASHTO publication, "Highway Design and Operational Practices Related to Highway Safety". They are discussed in considerable depth in this program and should provide a good working knowledge of roadside safety design. Much of the program is oriented around freeways; however, the principles apply equally toward the lower order highway.
