Book excerpt: The pastoral Somali people, with their rich heritage and unique way of life, offer a window into a world where the rhythms of nature and the bonds of community shape every aspect of life. From the birth of a child to the passage into adulthood, from marriage to the wisdom of old age, every stage of life is marked by deep-rooted traditions and practices. This book delves into these life-cycle events, uncovering the meanings, rituals, and customs that define the Somali pastoral experience. Beyond individual milestones, the household stands as the central unit of Somali pastoral society. It is within the walls of their homes that traditions are passed down, decisions are made, and the future of the community is shaped. This book explores the dynamics of these households, shedding light on the roles and relationships that bind them together. Throughout this exploration, we have been guided by a profound respect for the knowledge and insights of the Somali people themselves. Their stories, perspectives, and reflections are the heartbeat of this work, offering an authentic and nuanced understanding of a way of life that has endured through the ages.

Book excerpt: Welcome to the "Dictionary of Vernacular Swahili Plant Names," a comprehensive resource designed to bridge the gap between the rich linguistic heritage of Swahili and the scientific world of botany. This dictionary serves as a valuable tool for researchers, students, educators, horticulturists, conservationists, and anyone interested in the flora of East Africa and beyond. The Swahili language, with its deep historical roots and widespread usage across East Africa, is a cultural treasure that reflects the diverse influences of African, Arabic, Persian, and European languages. In this region, plants play a crucial role in everyday life, not just as sources of food, medicine, and material, but also as integral elements of cultural practices and traditional knowledge. The names given to these plants in Swahili are often imbued with meanings and stories that offer insights into the local culture, history, and environment. Recognizing the importance of preserving this linguistic and botanical heritage, this dictionary aims to catalogue the vernacular Swahili names of plants and provide their corresponding scientific names. By doing so, we facilitate a dialogue between traditional knowledge and scientific understanding, fostering a deeper appreciation of the natural world and its cultural significance. Each entry in this dictionary includes the vernacular Swahili name, the botanical name. The botanical names are based on the latest taxonomic classifications to ensure accuracy and relevance. We have taken great care to consult with linguists, botanists, and local communities to compile and verify the information presented in this dictionary. Our goal is to create a reliable and user-friendly reference that respects and celebrates the linguistic diversity of Swahili-speaking regions while contributing to the global body of botanical knowledge. As you explore the pages of this dictionary, we hope you will not only gain a greater understanding of the plants that surround us but also develop an appreciation for the rich linguistic tapestry that describes them. May this dictionary serve as a bridge between languages, cultures, and disciplines, fostering a shared respect for the natural world and its invaluable diversity.

Book excerpt: Large-scale displacement - whether caused by war, state-related political or development projects, different forms of political violence, structural crisis, or even natural disasters - evokes many stereotyped assumptions about those forcibly displaced or emplaced. At the same time there is a problematic lack of attention paid to the diversity of actors, strategies and practices that reshape the world in the face (and chronic aftermath) of dramatic moments of violent dislocation. In this highly original volume, based on empirical case studies from across sub-Saharan Africa, the authors reveal the paradoxical effects, both intended and unexpected, that displacement produces, and that manifest themselves in displacement economies. An important contribution to a topic of growing scholarly and policy interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By focusing on four specific hotbeds of instability-Somalia, Chechnya, Afghanistan, and Iraq-Richard H. Shultz Jr. and Andrea J. Dew carefully analyze tribal culture and clan associations, examine why "traditional" or "tribal" warriors fight, identify how these groups recruit, and where they find sanctuary, and dissect the reasoning behind their strategy. Their new introduction evaluates recent developments in Iraq and Afghanistan, the growing prevalence of Shultz and Dew's conception of irregular warfare, and the Obama Defense Department's approach to fighting insurgents, terrorists, and militias. War in the post-Cold War era cannot be waged through traditional Western methods of combat, especially when friendly states and outside organizations like al-Qaeda serve as powerful allies to the enemy. Bridging two centuries and several continents, Shultz and Dew recommend how conventional militaries can defeat these irregular yet highly effective organizations.

Book excerpt: The threat of terror, which flares in Africa and Indonesia, has given the problem of failed states an unprecedented immediacy and importance. In the past, failure had a primarily humanitarian dimension, with fewer implications for peace and security. Now nation-states that fail, or may do so, pose dangers to themselves, to their neighbors, and to people around the globe: preventing their failure, and reviving those that do fail, has become a strategic as well as a moral imperative. State Failure and State Weakness in a Time of Terror develops an innovative theory of state failure that classifies and categorizes states along a continuum from weak to failed to collapsed. By understanding the mechanisms and identifying the tell-tale indicators of state failure, it is possible to develop strategies to arrest the fatal slide from weakness to collapse. This state failure paradigm is illustrated through detailed case studies of states that have failed and collapsed (the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, the Sudan, Somalia), states that are dangerously weak (Colombia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan), and states that are weak but safe (Fiji, Haiti, Lebanon).

Book excerpt: Constitutionalism in Islamic Countries: Between Upheaval and Continuity examines the question of whether something similar to an "Islamic constitutionalism" has emerged out of the political and constitutional upheaval witnessed in many parts of North Africa, the Middle East, and Central and Southern Asia. In order to identify its defining features and to assess the challenges that Islamic constitutionalism poses to established concepts of constitutionalism, this book offers an integrated analysis of the complex frameworks in Islamic countries, drawing on the methods and insights of comparative constitutional law, Islamic law, international law and legal history. European and North American experiences are used as points of reference against which the peculiar challenges, and the specific answers given to those challenges in the countries surveyed, can be assessed. The book also examines ways in which the key concepts of constitutionalism, including fundamental rights, separation of powers, democracy and rule of law, may be adapted to an Islamic context, thus providing valuable new insights on the prospects for a genuine renaissance of constitutionalism in the Islamic world in the wake of the "Arab spring."

Book excerpt: In this book, in which definitions and examples of abuse from men and women from every continent and a very diverse set of backgrounds are considered. The volume provides information on the extent to which family violence is a recognized problem in each country, research findings available on different forms of family violence, and information on governmental responses to family violence. Finally, the value of an international human rights approach to abuse and violence in families is considered. The book presents an unparalleled international coverage, addressing all forms of family violence in Australia and at least two countries from every other continent. Each chapter begins by describing the cultural context in which family violence and abuse take place. These sections emphasize the role of women and children in the country. Providing a multitude of voices, each chapter includes fascinating and often dramatic definitions and examples of abuse from ordinary citizens of the country. The concluding chapter elaborates on the appropriateness of a human rights approach in addressing family violence cross-nationally and cross-culturally; and provides an excellent integration of much of the material from the previous chapters. The book is intended for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in psychology and sociology, as well as pre-professionals and professionals in medicine, law, and social services. It has strong relevance and value to individuals training in counseling (counselor education) and clinical psychology. Because of its readable style and extensive use of quotations from citizens of the countries studied for the book, it may also appeal to a much broader audience, including a lay audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While recurrent drought, war with neighboring Ethiopia, and a staggering refugee crisis have recently propelled the African nation of Somalia into world headlines, remarkably little is known about the history of this East African country. For the first time, Lee Cassanelli makes available a book-length study of Somalia's precolonial heritage. A nation of nomads, the Somalis have through long experience adapted to a harsh, semidesert environment. While persistently divided by clan, sectarian, and regional loyalties in the past, they have nevertheless come to acquire a compelling sense of their cultural unity and national identity. The Shaping of Somali Society examines the historical experiences of these people while focusing on recurrent themes: a deeply rooted kinship system based on lineages that feud as frequently as they cooperate; the gradual Islamization of the entire society through the work of itinerant Sufi saints; the rise and fall of regional sultanates and long-distance trade networks; and a history of resistance to foreign invaders. To reconstruct the past of this important African society, the author draws on ethnographic and linguistic evidence, travelers' accounts, a substantial body of Somali oral traditions, and recollections gathered during several visits to the country. Using this material and the techniques of traditional historiography, Cassanelli examines the precolonial interplay of environmental, social, economic, and religious forces that produced a society that, though politically fragmented, has been integrated at a number of levels of structure, belief, and behavior. Perhaps more importantly, the author discusses the problems of interpreting the often fragmentary historical data and presents a new framework for studying regional patterns of change in a pastoral setting.

Book excerpt: This volume addresses the central theme of adjusting the United Nations system in light of, firstly, the broadening definition of security, secondly, a perceived shift from modernity to post-modernity; and finally, the contemporary debate about reform, adaptation and institutional learning in multilateral institutions during transnational periods. The UN has not been successful in learning appropriate lessons that could facilitate requisite changes to its structure and operations. Thus the authors in this study focus on the lessons learned from the organizations' recent performance in collective security, preventative diplomacy, preventative deployment, peacekeeping, peacemaking, peace maintenance, and international legal, environmental and trade regulation.
