Book excerpt: We conducted a systematic and comprehensive review of the peer-reviewed scientific literature with respect to hearing loss among farmers and their exposure to noise, and the determinants of noise exposure, and methods for controlling those exposures on farms. [...] In early 2005 the School of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene was approached by the Farming and Ranch Safety and Health Association (FARSHA) to conduct a literature review on noise exposure and hearing loss in farming. [...] This report summarizes the findings of a comprehensive review of the scientific literature on noise and hearing loss in the agricultural setting; more detailed results are reported in the appendices. [...] A hearing conservation program is useful as it lays out a series of steps that can be undertaken to decrease the noise hazard: 1. Assessment of noise in the workplace 2. Worker education and training 3. Implementation of engineered noise controls 4. Posting of signs in hazardous areas 5. Provision of hearing protection devices 6. Annual hearing tests 7. Program evaluation 3 Compared to crop and da [...] There are many factors which influence the noise levels experienced inside a cab including the noise produced by the engine, the material of the cab, and the use of other noise controls on the tractor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As family farms grow in size, more machines are being used causing a concern of noise exposure amongst the family members and employees. One of the causes of hearing loss is the exposure to the noise produced by tractors. This study examines the noise exposure on pre 1980 tractors and if the addition of cabs reduces the exposure to a safe level and what influence the radios have on the noise exposure. Tractors were selected from area farms with readings taken in the cab without the radio playing, another with the radio playing and the final reading outside the cab door. Each reading was compared to the OSHA's standard of 80 decibels time weighted average over an eight hour period, the radio and no radio readings were compared to each other and the inside the cab and outside the cab was compared. The data collected from the readings reveals that cabs do reduce the noise exposure to some extent and the radios do increase the noise exposure. The study revealed that the placement of the muffler have more influence on the more exposure than the cabs do. To ensure the operators are free of noise danger, the cabs should be in good condition and the use of hearing protection is recommended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interplay of farm mechanization, human factors and climatic and other environmental uncertainty in agriculture, using an ergonomics based approach to discuss solutions to the traditionally acknowledged vulnerability of the sector. It converges contemporary research documentation, case studies and international standards on agricultural ergonomics, engineering anthropometry, human factors, basic occupational health services, safety management, human performance and system sustainability to provide a handy reference to students and professionals working to optimize agricultural output while balancing the rational utilization of labour in agricultural practices and human well-being.

Book Synopsis An Epidemiological Assessment of Ohio Farmers' Hearing Sensitivity by :
Download or read book An Epidemiological Assessment of Ohio Farmers' Hearing Sensitivity written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noise-induced hearing loss is the most common, and therefore one of the most investigated and well-documented, occupational hazards. A recent trend of investigating occupational hearing loss has been concentrated in the area of combined exposure. Studies have revealed that the interaction of noise and chemical exposure increases the risk and/or severity of hearing impairment. This suggests that exposure to chemicals either causes the auditory system to be more susceptible to the effects of noise or that it has an ototoxic affect that impacts the auditory system separately from noise. Studies have shown that independently from noise, the peripheral and central auditory systems are vulnerable to a variety of chemicals, solvents and possibly pesticides. The purpose of this hypothesis-generating study was to examine if a sample of Ohio farmers exhibited hearing loss, to determine the risk factors contributing to their hearing loss, to investigate the co-occurrence of pesticide exposure in this sample, and report key findings from the questionnaire data. To assess the hearing sensitivity of Ohio farmers several statistical models were employed to analyze the data, specifically the General Linear Model (GLM) and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). The principal findings were that: 1) this sample of Ohio farmers exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of hearing loss when compared to the general adult population; 2) recreational use of firearms, military service and age were found to be significant risk factors; 3) pesticide users did not show an increased risk of developing hearing loss when compared to non-pesticide users; 4) although 76% felt that personal protective devices were needed during the conduct of farm operations, 81% had no training in the prevention of occupational injuries or illnesses. Findings from this study suggest that some Ohio farmers may be at greater risk of hearing impairment. The reasons for this include firearms use, military service, lack of preventative occupational hazard training, as well as aging. They compare adversely with farmers who are significantly younger, have not been exposed to firearms, have not served in the military and were trained in occupational hazard prevention. The use of pesticides, however, did not increase the risk of hearing loss.

Book Synopsis Investigating the Influence of Hearing Loss on Injury Risk Among Ohio Farmers by : Melissa R. Meister
Download or read book Investigating the Influence of Hearing Loss on Injury Risk Among Ohio Farmers written by Melissa R. Meister and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Farming involves many physical, chemical and biological hazards which can result in occupational injury. More than 1 million U.S. principal operators are potentially exposed to noisy farm equipment and animals which can lead to noise-induced hearing loss. Diminished hearing sensitivity can impair the worker's ability to heed warning signals, communicate with others and monitor equipment. Previous studies have shown farmers to have a high prevalence of hearing loss as well as the association between hearing loss and agricultural injury. This study was conducted to 1) determine the injury characteristics, including hearing loss, among central Ohio farmers, 2) calculate the odds of injury for farmers with hearing loss and 3) identify potential predictors of injury among central Ohio farmers.
