Book excerpt: Recently, mostly due to global warming concerns and high oil prices, electric vehicles have attracted a great deal of interest as an elegant solution to environmental and energy problems. In addition to the fact that electric vehicles have no tailpipe emissions and are more efficient than internal combustion engine vehicles, they represent more versatile platforms on which to apply advanced motion control techniques. The focus of this book is to develop effective control strategies to improve driving dynamics and safety based on the philosophy of individually monitoring and controlling the tire forces on each wheel. A two-passenger electric all-wheel-drive urban vehicle with four in-wheel motors and an active steering system is designed and developed in this work. Based on this platform, a number of different stability and traction control systems have been developed using soft computing techniques. Finally, these control systems are integrated with each other and the performance and effectiveness of each stability control system is evaluated and compared using some standard test maneuvers.

Since the development of the internal combustion engine and its application to the transportation sector, people are becoming dependent on a more economic and comfortable way of traveling. However, besides all the benefits that combustion engines can provide, the abusive use of fossil fuels, its constant increase of price and recent environmental concerns led to a new form of mobility, supported on a technology already used in the past: the electric motor. Having this in consideration, this book aims at analyzing and discussing the control domain in electric mobility concerning the permanent magnet synchronous motors, in particular an application of a 150kW motor for an electric bus. It is presented the design of the controller that drives the motor, allowing its driving and braking, with the ability to regenerate braking energy for recharging the batteries. Also, the system is capable of working without speed or position sensors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon the ongoing profound revolution in the automotive industry, this book is primarily intended to give guidance on the practical design of traction motor control for pure electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). An overview of the state-of-the-art motor types is provided to help understanding the background of automotive motor drives and the EV/HEV motor control specifications. Using AC induction motor control as a benchmark example, it addresses the motor control techniques by means of design, analysis, examples with MATLAB scripts wherever applicable, and practical control software architecture diagrams. In particular, an extensive analysis and discussion are made on the widely used vector control method together with multiple optimization schemes. As such, it gives coverage of the electric traction control including dynamics, efficiency, and the high-speed power capability, taking into account the constraints of vehicle configuration and requirements. The vector control and optimization strategies presented in this book can be ported across to other AC motor types without losing much generality. This book tries to bridge the gap between theory and practicality. Beginning with basic motor theory and completing the motor control design by introducing voltage source inverter (VSI) pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques, it helps the reader take a step-by-step approach from understanding fundamental motor characteristics through to practical design of in-depth motor control strategies.

Book excerpt: Hybrid vehicles are becoming the future of automobiles leasing into the all-electric generation of vehicles. Electrical vehicles come with a great increase in torque at lower RPM resulting in the issue of transferring this torque to the ground effectively. In this thesis, a method is presented for limiting wheel slip and targeting the ideal slip ratio for dry asphalt and low friction surfaces at every given time step. A launch control system is developed to further reduce wheel slip on initial acceleration from standstill furthering acceleration rates to sixty miles per hour. A MATLAB Simulink model was built of the powertrain as well as a six degree of freedom vehicle model that has been validated with real testing data from the car. This model was utilized to provide a reliable platform for optimizing control strategies without having to access the physical vehicle, thus reducing physical testing. A nine percent increase has been achieved by utilizing traction control and launch control for initial vehicle movement to sixty miles per hour.

Book excerpt: Modern hybrid electric and pure electric vehicles are highly dependent on control algorithms to provide seamless safe and reliable operation under any driving condition, regardless of driver behavior. Three unique and independently operating supervisory control algorithms are introduced to improve reliability and vehicle performance on a series-hybrid electric vehicle with an all-wheel drive all-electric drivetrain. All three algorithms dynamically control or limit the amount of torque that can be delivered to the wheels through an all-electric drivetrain, consisting of two independently controlled brushless-direct current (BLDC) electric machines. Each algorithm was developed and validated following a standard iterative engineering development process which places a heavy emphasis on modeling and simulation to validate the algorithms before they are tested on the physical system. A comparison of simulated and in-vehicle test results is presented, emphasizing the importance of modeling and simulation in the design process.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the research undertaken by the author within the field of intelligent traction motor control for Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Electric Vehicle (EV) applications. A robust Fuzzy Logic (FL) based traction motor field-orientated control scheme is developed which can control multiple motor topologies and HEV/EV powertrain architectures without the need for re-tuning. This control scheme can aid in the development of an HEV/EV and for continuous control of the traction motor/s in the final production vehicle. An overcurrent-tolerant traction motor sizing strategy is developed to gauge if a prospective motor's torque and thermal characteristics can fulfil a vehicle's target dynamic and electrical objectives during the early development stages of an HEV/EV. An industrial case study is presented. An on-line reduced switching multilevel inverter control scheme is investigated which increases the inverter's efficiency while maintaining acceptable levels of output waveform harmonic distortion. A FL based vehicle stability control system is developed that improves the controllability and stability of an HEV/EV during an emergency braking manoeuvre. This system requires minimal vehicle parameters to be used within the control system, is insensitive to variable vehicle parameters and can be tuned to meet a vehicle's target dynamic objectives.

Book excerpt: Due to the improvements on electric motors and motor control technology, alternative vehicle power system layouts have been considered. One of the latest is known as distributed drive electric vehicles (DDEVs), which consist of four motors that are integrated into each drive and can be independently controllable. Such an innovative design provides packaging advantages, including short transmission chain, fast and accurate torque response, and so on. Based on these advantages and features, this book takes stability and energy-saving as cut-in points, and conducts investigations from the aspects of Vehicle State Estimation, Direct Yaw Moment Control (DYC), Control Allocation (CA). Moreover, lots of advanced algorithms, such as general regression neural network, adaptive sliding mode control-based optimization, as well as genetic algorithms, are applied for a better control performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, mostly due to global warming concerns and high oil prices, electric vehicles have attracted a great deal of interest as an elegant solution to environmental and energy problems. In addition to the fact that electric vehicles have no tailpipe emissions and are more efficient than internal combustion engine vehicles, they represent more versatile platforms on which to apply advanced motion control techniques, since motor torque and speed can be generated and controlled quickly and precisely. The chassis control systems developed today are distinguished by the way the individual subsystems work in order to provide vehicle stability and control. However, the optimum driving dynamics can only be achieved when the tire forces on all wheels and in all three directions can be influenced and controlled precisely. This level of control requires that the vehicle is equipped with various chassis control systems that are integrated and networked together. Drive-by-wire electric vehicles with in-wheel motors provide the ideal platform for developing the required control system in such a situation. The focus of this thesis is to develop effective control strategies to improve driving dynamics and safety based on the philosophy of individually monitoring and controlling the tire forces on each wheel. A two-passenger electric all-wheel-drive urban vehicle (AUTO21EV) with four direct-drive in-wheel motors and an active steering system is designed and developed in this work. Based on this platform, an advanced fuzzy slip control system, a genetic fuzzy yaw moment controller, an advanced torque vectoring controller, and a genetic fuzzy active steering controller are developed, and the performance and effectiveness of each is evaluated using some standard test maneuvers. Finally, these control systems are integrated with each other by taking advantage of the strengths of each chassis control system and by distributing the required control effort between the in-wheel motors and the active steering system. The performance and effectiveness of the integrated control approach is evaluated and compared to the individual stability control systems, again based on some predefined standard test maneuvers.
