Book excerpt: This reference contains the latest knowledge on vehicle development with CVT powertrains, transmission assembly design and performance, and the design and development of the five major components of CVT technology: launch device, variator systems, geartrains, control systems, and lubrication. Building on an earlier SAE publication, the 37 technical papers selected for this book cover updated information on a variety of topics within the area of CVTs. Although this book is not intended to represent the full body of CVT technology, it provides technical presentations and their reference documents, which can lead to discussions covering several topics of interest in CVTs.

This book was released on 2015-09-28 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The light-duty vehicle fleet is expected to undergo substantial technological changes over the next several decades. New powertrain designs, alternative fuels, advanced materials and significant changes to the vehicle body are being driven by increasingly stringent fuel economy and greenhouse gas emission standards. By the end of the next decade, cars and light-duty trucks will be more fuel efficient, weigh less, emit less air pollutants, have more safety features, and will be more expensive to purchase relative to current vehicles. Though the gasoline-powered spark ignition engine will continue to be the dominant powertrain configuration even through 2030, such vehicles will be equipped with advanced technologies, materials, electronics and controls, and aerodynamics. And by 2030, the deployment of alternative methods to propel and fuel vehicles and alternative modes of transportation, including autonomous vehicles, will be well underway. What are these new technologies - how will they work, and will some technologies be more effective than others? Written to inform The United States Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission standards, this new report from the National Research Council is a technical evaluation of costs, benefits, and implementation issues of fuel reduction technologies for next-generation light-duty vehicles. Cost, Effectiveness, and Deployment of Fuel Economy Technologies for Light-Duty Vehicles estimates the cost, potential efficiency improvements, and barriers to commercial deployment of technologies that might be employed from 2020 to 2030. This report describes these promising technologies and makes recommendations for their inclusion on the list of technologies applicable for the 2017-2025 CAFE standards.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Traction and Transmission Engineering The ultimate purpose of nearly all the professional efforts of an engineer is the attainment of efficiency in the utilization of labor, capital, and energy. To attain the highest efficiency in the construction and the subsequent operation of a complete installation requires a knowledge of the facts and a familiarity with the laws pertaining to these three factors. Decisions as to the selection of the type and the dimensions of an element, often attributed to the exercise of good judgment, are generally the specific results of the correct application of laws to all pertinent facts. The number of facts to be considered in determining the final elements of a complete electric traction system is enormous. As a consequence students and young engineers become bewildered and 'are unable to discriminate as to the pertinency or necessity of specific details. To meet this condition the present text has been prepared, it' being believed that no other single published book meets it. In preparing the text the determination of what to omit has involved nearly as much effort as of what to include. Compact and easy to understand, it provides an overview of the technology that goes into modern commercial vehicles. Starting from the customer's fundamental requirements, the characteristics and systems that define the design of the vehicles are presented knowledgeably in a series of articles, each of which can be read and studied on their own. This volume, Transmissions and Drivetrain Design, begins with an explanation of how driving resistance and the engine characteristics factor into the configuration of the transmission and transmission ratios. The transmission and its associated assemblies are presented in detail, providing a clear understanding for training and practical applications. Other components of the drivetrain such as the propeller shaft, the clutch and the retarder are also discussed.
