A short, ape-like creature covered in white hair, the Yeti, also known as the abominable snowman, has been vexing explorers and locals for generations. Readers will follow the development of the Yeti's lore as well as encounter possible scientific explanations for its existence. They will follow stories of climbing mountains, smuggling artifacts, and testing DNA evidence, all of which have led to more questions than answers. Although the Yeti calls such a remote area of the world home, readers will learn how far the cryptid's reach is in pop culture as well as how many efforts there have been to find it.

The subject of thousands of stories, this creature has been pegged as a monster terrorizing the woods, a supernatural entity stealthily living among us with an otherworldly agenda, or simply an animal trying to live a life of seclusion. With various theories and beliefs abounding, research and discussion have become a hobby for many, and even an occupation for some. In The Legend of Bigfoot: Leaving His Mark on the World, T. S. Mart and Mel Cabre reveal the myths, personal stories, and pop culture surrounding the legendary icon. Featuring more than 80 images recreating the Bigfoot's appearance from firsthand accounts and folktales, The Legend of Bigfoot showcases the many faces of the creature. Included are the Boston Bahumagosh, which is said to weigh up to 400 pounds, stand up to 10 feet tall, and terrorize the Boston area; the Honey Island Swamp Monster—also known as the Louisiana Wookie—who roams the Louisiana swamps with yellow or red eyes; and the Wendigo, placed between 7 and 15 feet tall with long, yellow fangs and yellow-tinted skin. Half phantom, half beast, the Wendigo lives in the forest and dates back to the earliest Native American legends. Featuring legends, culture, and history from across the globe, The Legend of Bigfoot brings the famed cryptid to life in this entertaining and accessible guide.

Book excerpt: As it turned out, young Daniel never outgrew the enchantment of the mysterious Yeti, the Abominable Snowman. His search for the enigmatic creature of Himalayan legends spread over many decades: from 1956 until 2015, Daniel C. Taylor visited almost all valley systems in his quest to explain the ‘Yeti’s footprints’. But to his surprise, solving the footprint mystery did not answer the Yeti question. As his quest evolved, Taylor went on to create two massive national parks around Mount Everest. Equipped with abundant knowledge of the Himalaya, Taylor tells a story that is captivating and full of surprises. He looks back at his exploration of the 2,000-mile-wide Himalaya and talks about bioresilience as a parallel dynamic to biodiversity, thus widening the scope of our understanding of ecology. Yeti: The Ecology of a Mystery is the extraordinary story of one man’s conservation impact and what it means for people to be part of the wild in today’s increasingly tamed world.

All goes well and our band of adventurers begin to knit together as a team enjoying meeting new people and activities such as white-water rafting, mountaineering, and skiing. It is while participating in these activities that a disaster strikes that almost brings the trek to a fatal end saved by the intervention of monks who possess a mystifying cure. After a near miraculous recovery of the injured group member the band go in search of the source of the monks’ cure after biochemistry analysis reveals enigmas, this leads them to the discovery of a portal to someplace not of earth. The group decide to conceal their findings choosing to abandon one adventure to that of exploring this new world. They soon discover that the planet is one of a twin that orbits a star, part of a small cluster which they call ‘The Five Loaves and Two Fishes’. The planet no longer has animal life which became extinct sometime in the past due to a snowball period in the planet’s history. They decide to front their project by creating a seed bank to enable them to introduce earth biological species to Newearth. One enigma after another has to be overcome requiring new members to be added to the team until suspicion is aroused and a diplomatic deal has to be made. This grants the team freedom to further expand the scientific expedition until its numbers exceed ten thousand. During this time the team leader is seduced by an Indian host and their relationship becomes a focal point. However, conflict between India and Islamic terrorists result in a catastrophic nuclear explosion in the high atmosphere, the effect of which is to rapidly bring about the closure of the portal trapping the exploration teams on Newearth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On every continent and in every nation, animals unrecognized by modern science are reported on a daily basis. People passionately pursue these creatures--the name given to their field of study is cryptozoology. Coined in the 1950s, the term literally means the science of hidden animals. When the International Society of Cryptozoology (ISC) was formed in 1982, the founders declared that the branch of science is also concerned with "the possible existence of known animals in areas where they are not supposed to occur (either now or in the past) as well as the unknown persistence of presumed extinct animals to the present time or to the recent past...what makes an animal of interest to cryptology is that it is unexpected." This reference work presents a "flesh and blood" view of cryptozoology. Here, 2,744 entries are listed, the majority of which each describe one specific creature or type of creature. Other entries cover 742 places where unnamed cryptids are said to appear; profiles of 77 groups and 112 individuals who have contributed to the field; descriptions of objects and events important to the subject; and essays on cryptotourism and hoaxes, for example. Appendices offer a timeline of zoological discoveries, annotated lists of movies and television series with cryptozoological themes, a list of crypto-fiction titles and a list of Internet websites devoted to cryptozoology.

Book excerpt: In this landmark work on a subject too often dismissed as paranormal or disreputable, Jeff Meldrum gives us the first book on sasquatch to be written by a scientist with impeccable academic credentials, an objective look at the facts in a field mined with hoaxes and sensationalism. Meldrum reports on the work of a team of experts from a wide variety of fields who were assembled to examine the evidence for a large, yet undiscovered, North American primate. He reviews the long history of this mystery--which long predates the "bigfoot" flap of the late fifties--and explains all the scientific pros and cons in a clear and accessible style, amplified by over 150 illustrations. Anyone who has pondered the mysteries of human evolution will be fascinated and eager to join Dr. Meldrum in drawing their own conclusion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...you're talking about a yeti or bigfoot or sasquatch. Well now, you'll be amazed whenI tell you that I'm sure they exist." --Jane Goodall, on NPR This is "The Big Book of Yetis." What the reader gets here is a world-class geneticist's search for evidence for the existence of Big Foot, yeti, or the abominable snowman. Along the way, he visits sites of alleged sightings of these strange creatures, attends meetings of cryptozoologists, recounts the stories of famous monster-hunting expeditions, and runs possible yeti DNA through his highly regarded lab in Oxford. Sykes introduces us to the crackpots, visionaries, and adventurers who have been involved in research into this possible scientific dead-end over the pat 100 years. Sykes is a serious scientist who knows how to tell a story, and this is a credible and engaging account. Almost, but not quite human, the yeti and its counterparts from wild regions of the world, still exert a powerful atavistic influence on us. Is the yeti just a phantasm of our imagination or a survivor from our own savage ancestry? Or is it a real creature? This is the mystery that Bryan Sykes set out to unlock. "An intriguing book...It is this humanity, this cheerful readiness to travel out into the deepest pine forests of Washington State to interview a twitchy hunter in a Chewbacca T-shirt about something he thought he heard groaning in the woods that makes this book worth reading. If science does ever acknowledge the yeti, it will be thanks to somebody very much like Sykes. --The Times London

Book excerpt: It seemed like a good idea to Heather at the time: organise a challenging trek to raise funds for the education of young Bhutanese girls. Heather had walked in the Himalayas before, so how hard could it be on the trail to Lunana, Bhutan?s most remote plateau? On the 240-kilometre trek, she discovers that `hard? doesn?t even come close. Along with her friend Krista, like-minded lover of mountains and margaritas, a team of eccentric guides and far too many horses, Heather sets off into a landscape of savage beauty, where yetis are feared and only yaks feel at ease. As the team face blizzards, avalanches, altitude sickness and snow blindness, their reward is a rare glimpse of life in the last Shangri-La. At its heart, this book is a love song to Bhutan and its people, an intimate portrait of the only remaining Buddhist kingdom of the Himalayas. Yak on Track is a delightful story about losing yourself but not losing your way. Heather is donating a portion of her royalties from the sale of this book to the Australian Himalayan Foundation in support of a scholarship program for disadvantaged children in Bhutan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent surge in people’s reconnecting with nature has resulted in numerous reference books for outdoor program leaders, but—until now—there has been a dearth of books aimed at wintertime pursuits. The Get-Outside Guide to Winter Activities unlocks the door to a wealth of fun and adventure in the snow. Activities have been compiled by keepers of the trail, experienced winter trekker leaders who know how to lead people in outdoor winter activities that are safe and fun and help people experience the joy of being active outdoors during the cold months of the year. This guide offers activities and games that have the following features: • Appropriate for multiple age groups • Easily modifiable to adapt to varying skillsets • Designed for a variety of locales, such as schoolyards, community trails, urban and remote parks, and wilderness settings The guide offers activities that are suitable for groups of varying skill levels and experience. Most activities are simple and quick and require little preparation and few props. Those interested in doing more can explore snowshoeing or Nordic skiing activities and even exploratory outings and winter day trips from a base camp to overnight or extended camping excursions. The book includes tactical snow games and activities and even has icebreakers for games. In addition, solo winter trekkers can use the activities and lessons as a launching point to prepare them in leading groups in winter outings. Leaders are shown how to build in activities that call on typical age-level skills of participants. The essential-skills progression built into the activities helps leaders offer instructional strategies that allow all participants to take part within their ability, and leaders are provided with ideas to modify all approaches and activities to ensure inclusion for all in their group. In addition to the game and activity modifications, the book offers winter facts that enhance participants’ knowledge about the science of snow and winter as well as charts and graphs that focus on safety in winter. The Get-Outside Guide to Winter Activities offers a planning framework that balances winter fun with skills and safety and prepares leaders to guide others in enjoying activities in the snow. You will learn about activities that require little or no props, adaptive snow games, tips based on actual winter excursions, gear requirements, and leadership suggestions shared by winter experts: • How to stay warm and dry while winter camping • What and how to eat, drink, and cook in the winter • What gear you need for a snow expedition • What games and activities are great for campsites • How to teach basic snowshoeing and Nordic skiing skills • The keys to managing groups outside in winter You’ll also learn how to make the most of winter opportunities through tried-and-true ideas, skill progressions and games, and activities that open up an entire season’s worth of enjoyment, learning, and adventure. “People shy away from outdoor winter activities for three reasons,” says Andrew Foran, one of the book’s authors. “There’s an overemphasis on the skills that are thought to be required for participation. Granted, in some cases skills are essential, but it’s how you approach the teaching and practicing of those skills that makes the difference. “Then there’s a belief that the wintertime outdoors is to be feared rather than embraced. And finally, people are lacking a bank of ideas, of things to do, to keep them engaged and having fun outdoors in the winter.” The Get-Outside Guide to Winter Activities addresses all three misconceptions—and in the process shows you, as a leader, how to help your participants have fun in the snow, build skills, and create lasting memories that will keep them looking forward to the next big snowfall.
