Book excerpt: You don't have to learn everything about genetic genealogy before asking specific questions of your DNA! That's the premise of Diahan Southard's brand new book, Your DNA Guide - the Book, now available for pre-order at a special sale price. Your DNA Guide - the Book is like no other genetic genealogy book on the market. Instead of learning more-than-you-need-to-know in textbook style, you'll choose a specific DNA question to start exploring right away. You'll follow concrete step-by-step plans, learning important DNA concepts--in plain English--as you go. Do you want to learn who your 2X great grandmother is? Turn to page 23. Do you want to know how you are related to one of your DNA matches? Page 37. As you proceed, you check your progress and get new guidance based on your specific results at each stage. (Including troubleshooting, like when your matches just aren't responding or your great-grandparents turn out to be first cousins.) This powerful, hands-on approach is based on Diahan's 20 years of experience in the genetic genealogy industry and especially in the past five years, as she helps clients one-on-one make DNA discoveries. It became clear to her that while each client's situation may be unique, there are patterns in how you can find solutions that you can apply yourself. Your DNA Guide - the Book is for anyone who has taken a DNA test or may want to. It helps genealogists reconstruct family trees. It helps adoptees identify biological relatives. It can help you identify a specific DNA match. In short, it helps anyone explore what their DNA--and their DNA matches--can tell them about their origins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easy-to-use, straightforward guide for British family historians looking to trace their ancestry using DNA testing. DNA research is one of the most rapidly advancing areas in modern science, and the practical use of DNA testing in genealogy is one of its most exciting applications. Yet there is no recent British publication in this field. That is why this accessible, wide-ranging introduction is so valuable. It offers a clear, practical way into the subject, explaining the scientific discoveries and techniques and illustrating with case studies how it can be used by genealogists to gain an insight into their ancestry. The subject is complex and perhaps difficult for traditional genealogists to understand but, with the aid of this book, novices who are keen to take advantage of it will be able to interpret test results and use them to help answer genealogical questions which cannot be answered by documentary evidence alone. It will also appeal to those with some experience in the field because it places the practical application of genetic genealogy within a wider context, highlighting its role as a genealogical tool and suggesting how it can be made more effective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple, easy-to-use guide for British family historians wishing to trace their female ancestry. Everyone has a mother and a line of female ancestors, and often their paths through life are hard to trace. That is why this detailed, accessible handbook is of such value, for it explores the lives of female ancestors from the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 to the beginning of the First World War. In 1815, a woman was the chattel of her husband; by 1914, when the menfolk were embarking on one of the most disastrous wars ever known, the women at home were taking on jobs and responsibilities never before imagined. Adèle Emm’s work is the ideal introduction to the role of women during this period of dramatic social change. Chapters cover the quintessential experiences of birth, marriage, and death; a woman’s working and daily life, both middle and working class; through to crime and punishment, the acquisition of an education and the fight for equality. Each chapter gives advice on where further resources, archives, wills, newspapers, and websites can be found, with plentiful common-sense advice on how to use them. “A unique and information packed instructional reference and guide, Tracing Your Female Ancestors: A Guide for Family Historians is an extraordinary and thoroughly user friendly manual that is unreservedly recommended for both community and academic library Genealogy collections and supplemental studies lists.” —Midwest Book Review

Book excerpt: A recent Maritz Poll reported that 60% of Americans are interested in their family history. And with good reason. Through genealogy, you can go back into history to meet people who have had more influence on your life than any others -- your ancestors. And the better you get to know your ancestors, the better you will get to know yourself: the who's and what's and why's of you. Barbara Renick, a nationally-known lecturer on genealogy, tells the uninitiated researcher the steps needed to find out who their ancestors really were, and brings together for even the more experienced genealogical researchers the important principles and practices. She covers such topics as the importance of staying organized and how to go about it; where and how to look for information in libraries, historical societies, and on the internet; recognizing that just because something is in print doesn't mean it's right; and how to prepare to visit the home where your ancestors lived. Genealogy 101 is the first book to read when you want to discover who your ancestors were, where they lived, and what they did.

Book excerpt: The recent past is so often neglected when people research their family history, yet it can be one of the most rewarding periods to explore, and so much fascinating evidence is available. The rush of events over the last century and the rapid changes that have taken place in every aspect of life have been dramatic, and the lives of family members of only a generation or two ago may already appear remote. That is why Karen Balis informative and accessible guide to investigating your immediate ancestors is essential reading, and a handy reference for anyone who is trying to trace them or discover the background to their lives. In a sequence of concise, fact-filled chapters she looks back over the key events of the twentieth century and identifies the sources that can give researchers an insight into the personal stories of individuals who lived through it. She explains census and civil records, particularly those of the early twentieth century, and advises readers on the best way to get relevant information from directories and registers as well as wills and other personal documents. Chapters also cover newspapers which often provide personal details and offer a vivid impression of the world of the time professional and property records and records of migration and naturalization. This practical handbook is rounded off with sections on tracing living relatives and likely future developments in the field.

By Jenny Cameron. Reviews: “This sent chills down my spine as I do believe you have discovered the true roots of my maternal grandfather!!” “You are so amazing with all the ancestry information you find out.” Contents Introduction Finding the right ‘MO’ (method of operation) Structured MO Bearings Approach Sourcing Tracing Align About the author Introduction This guidebook was written with the purpose to provide a workable methodology towards your need to ‘bridge the gap’ in genealogy research and, tracing back your ancestral family roots. Just to introduce myself, a certified business analyst professional with an interest in the application of research, and ancestry history. So far, I have spent four years of my time navigating different websites, forums, and approaches to various platforms as my data mining processes. My main overall purpose throughout was to keep the financial costs down, my time invested over navigating around for data to a minimum possible, managing my time by bypassing any process waste time can consume, and how best to simplify the process along the way for a workable ease of obtaining knowledge ‘sourcing’. Here are my tips that I am passing along to you, I hope you will find this guidebook helpful and that it did serve the purpose to meet your needs of low cost, time saving, and adoption of a structed process with ease. Lets’ get started, but best get started after reading my guide in full here. Finding the right ‘MO’ (method of operation) Adopting and using the right ‘MO’ from the start will help you trace, maintain and prioritise for the development of a solution throughout your journey and, when you must retire upon reaching a dead end. Yes, that is right, you may reach a dead end, and I plan to help you NOT to have invested 80% of your time, to reach 20% of probability meeting your goal when instead you went down a rabbit hole, it can happen, I have been there, but not too often because I adopted the MO and stuck with it. Perhaps you will retire from the process once the need is met. Firstly, we need to have a shared understanding of what is a ‘need’? What are your needs throughout this journey? And always, always, refer back to this need as your ‘Bearings’ which I will explain further under the chapter Bearings. A need is when you have a problem or an opportunity to be addressed. There is a requirement that you trace back your ancestry to further understand your identity, to connect with other distant relatives, or to respond to a need to complete your family tree, or to obtain value that is the importance or usefulness it may provide you. The ‘journey’ is the process you will undertake as you navigate around your ‘Structured MO’, as you continue through the development of a solution and ends when a solution has presented itself. The ‘Structured MO’ is a cycle of steps that I advise you to use, I will explain this further in the chapter Structured MO. About the author Jenny Cameron Certified Business Analyst Professional Genealogist-enthusiast, Researcher & Information Thirsty, Digital Strategist, Mother, Baker, Recipe Developer, Blogger, World Traveller and Charity Fundraiser.

In other words, it can be said to be a ‘modern genealogy’, and this book is called your ‘Keepsake Memory Record Book’. This booklet explains genealogy from a genetic perspective, considering both the maternal and paternal lines, rather than a traditional genealogy made up of paternal ancestors. Family information appropriate for the modern era was applied. The author hopes that reading this booklet will become a good guideline to increase family intimacy and protect the family's health.
