Book excerpt: The remarkable, untold story of one Holocaust survivor's resilience against all odds, discovered through a chance encounter with a collection of her wartime poetry. Originally from Nuremberg, Germany, Else Dormitzer dedicated much of her life to combating antisemitism in a city that became synonymous with Nazi propaganda and spectacle in the Third Reich. Drawing on materials from the family’s extensive personal archive, Traces of Memory follows her life from pre-war Nuremberg to war-torn Amsterdam, from the confines of the Theresienstadt ghetto to post-war life in London. The result is a deeply personal story of a woman at the margins of memory. Accompanied by historical photographs, the book includes Dormitzer’s original poetry collection from Theresienstadt and three testimonial accounts of her Holocaust experience to keep alive the work and story of a singular woman.

Download or read book Trace written by Lauret Savoy and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a New Preface by the Author Through personal journeys and historical inquiry, this PEN Literary Award finalist explores how America’s still unfolding history and ideas of “race” have marked its people and the land. Sand and stone are Earth’s fragmented memory. Each of us, too, is a landscape inscribed by memory and loss. One life–defining lesson Lauret Savoy learned as a young girl was this: the American land did not hate. As an educator and Earth historian, she has tracked the continent’s past from the relics of deep time; but the paths of ancestors toward her—paths of free and enslaved Africans, colonists from Europe, and peoples indigenous to this land—lie largely eroded and lost. A provocative and powerful mosaic that ranges across a continent and across time, from twisted terrain within the San Andreas Fault zone to a South Carolina plantation, from national parks to burial grounds, from “Indian Territory” and the U.S.–Mexico Border to the U.S. capital, Trace grapples with a searing national history to reveal the often unvoiced presence of the past. In distinctive and illuminating prose that is attentive to the rhythms of language and landscapes, she weaves together human stories of migration, silence, and displacement, as epic as the continent they survey, with uplifted mountains, braided streams, and eroded canyons. Gifted with this manifold vision, and graced by a scientific and lyrical diligence, she delves through fragmented histories—natural, personal, cultural—to find shadowy outlines of other stories of place in America. "Every landscape is an accumulation," reads one epigraph. "Life must be lived amidst that which was made before." Courageously and masterfully, Lauret Savoy does so in this beautiful book: she lives there, making sense of this land and its troubled past, reconciling what it means to inhabit terrains of memory—and to be one.

Download or read book Memory Traces in the Brain written by Daniel L. Alkon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987-12-25 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing the first glimpse of how associative memories are actually established in our brains, this book describes a research strategy for unravelling the mystery of memory and learning. The results of this experimental quest are described at several levels of biological complexity including animal behavior, neural systems, cellular and membrane physiology, and molecular regulation. The amply illustrated text is carefully structured to distinguish between observations and hypotheses, between attractive possibilities and empirical demonstrations. Dr Alkon progresses step-by-step through a series of experimental tests of intuitive conjectures on the nature of learning and memory. The book guides the reader through a scientific detective story that sheds new light on how we learn and how we remember.

Book Synopsis Traces of Memory: an Exploration of Print, Fiber, and Narrative by : Sara Method
Download or read book Traces of Memory: an Exploration of Print, Fiber, and Narrative written by Sara Method and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces of Memory is a body of work focused on the role of memory, personal archives, and place. Memories exist at the boundary of reality and fiction. All the works of art in this exhibition are related to my experiences in my hometown of Bassett, VA - both in my childhood impressions of the place, and the incongruities of revisiting the town as an adult. In my creative research and process, I am seeking to use the language of prints and fibers to indicate the layering of impressions and loss of information when moving from physical experience of a place to the memory of place, and abstract impression of memory to the final impression of the traces of memory. The works of art discussed in this paper all attempt to capture a moment in time that is not concrete, and the imagery has the appearance of disappearing or dissolving. In my art practice, I utilize a naturalist's approach of observing and recording in the field to explore interactions in our environments through fibers, sewing and cutting, drawing and prints, and writing narratives. The pathways of research, exploration, and creativity shift in this project as thoughts and memories refuse to stay fully within their vessel during the process of creating the work. Through the lens of creative research and art practice, I will mine my own personal archive of memories to trace paths of connection as I attempt to discover what impressions are left by childhood experiences and a sense of community.
Book Synopsis Traces and Memories of Slavery in the Atlantic World by : Lawrence Aje
Download or read book Traces and Memories of Slavery in the Atlantic World written by Lawrence Aje and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traces and Memories deals with the foundation, mechanisms and scope of slavery-related memorial processes, interrogating how descendants of enslaved populations reconstruct the history of their ancestors when transatlantic slavery is one of the variables of the memorial process. While memory studies mark a shift from concern with historical knowledge of events to that of memory, the book seeks to bridge the memorial representations of historical events with the production and knowledge of those events. The book offers a methodological and epistemological reflection on the challenges that are raised by archival limitations in relation to slavery and how they can be overcome. It covers topics such as the historical and memorial legacy/ies of slavery, the memorialization of slavery, the canonization and patrimonialization of the memory of slavery, the places and conditions of the production of knowledge on slavery and its circulation, the heritage of slavery and the (re)construction of (collective) identity. By offering fresh perspectives on how slavery-related sites of memory have been retrospectively (re)framed or (re)shaped, the book probes the constraints which determine the inscription of this contentious memory in the public sphere. The volume will serve as a valuable resource in the area of slavery, memory, and Atlantic studies.
