Book excerpt: Indo-Iranian cultural relations are a continuous historical process starting from the gray dawn of the common united life of the ancestors of these twoi great Asian civilizations as part and parcel of the original Indo-European stock. The process has unfolded itself in history through alternate phases of harmony and conflict and has percolated down to our times. The ancestors of Iranian and Indian Aryans of history are believed to have lived in a common habitat in Central Asia as an undivided ethnic group from the fourth millenium to that of the third millenium B.C. They shared a common life-experience and were inextricably linked-up on the cultural level in spite of their numerous internal differences and conflicts. From this common habitat the inhabitants migrated in two branches towards the west and the cast between circa 4000 and 3000 B.C. Those who moved towards the east entered Iran and India where they were to develop their distinctive civilizations througout the succeeding ages. The undivided Indo-Iranians aer believed to have lived for abot a millenium (circa 4000-3000 B.C.) In this period they lived a common life and developed a specific Indo-Iranian civilization, culture and religion which we can partially reconstruct by a comparative study of the Veda and the Zend Avesta. There are amazing similarities in their language, culture and religion which strike us as little short of identity. From time immemorial the Orient has been the cradle of civilization; that amongst all other Oriental countries Iran and India stand first and foremost in their contribution to world culture and that these two nations were the torch bearers of knowledge, the forerunners of a fine civilization at a time when the civilized countries of the modern world were still plunged in dim obscurity of ignorance countries of modern world were still plunged in dim obscurity of ignorance. Linguistic affirnities, national kinship and distinctive racial characteristics constitute the inseparable bonds of friendship and fellowship that have brought the two nations together from the earliest times throughout the course of history. These two countries have been tied together by strong and lasting bonds, and, both in ancient times and during the medieval era, their cultures have profited mutually by a continual exchange of knowledge and ideas. These lasting ties prompted Jawaharal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, to write in his famous book "Discovery of India". Dr Anu Dhawan

Book excerpt: SABK-E HINDI THE 'INDIAN STYLE' IN PERSIAN POETRYAn Anthology from Amir Khusrau to GhalibTranslation & Introduction Paul SmithJan Rypka in his monumental History of Iranian Literature after talking of the first two styles of Persian poetry the 'Kuranasani' style then the 'Iraqian' style goes on to state: "A third style - the 'Indian' as it is called nowadays - was added to the first two from the time of Amir Khusrau Dihlavi. This was evoked both by time and by place, without however being thereby restricted within narrow limits. Rather can it be said that under the Safavids, thus much later it spread like an avalanche to Khurasan and Turkestan as well as Iraq..." He then says that one could call the Kuranasani style up to the 12th century 'realism'; the Iraqian style, 'naturalism' and from the mid 15th century the Indian style in full bloom as 'impressionism, symbolism and romanticism'. Hafiz so loved the ghazals of Amir Khusrau that he copied them (the manuscript still exists in a library in Tashkent). Hafiz was the greatest influence on all the poets that followed him especially the poets of the so called 'fresh' or 'Indian' style and especially Fighani & Urfi who also came from Shiraz. In his ghazals, Hafiz had expressed new ways of seeing the Creation and the inner realms of consciousness as symbols of God's Beauty... he described this in ghazals that were at first spiritually 'romantic', spiritually 'impressionistic' and then spiritually 'surrealistic' or 'symbolic'. Book excerpt: THE Asrar-i Khudi was first published at Lahore in 1915. I read it soon afterwards and thought so highly of it that I wrote to Iqbal, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at Cambridge some fifteen years ago, asking leave to prepare an English translation. My proposal was cordially accepted, but in the meantime I found other work to do, which caused the translation to be laid aside until last year. Before submitting it to the reader, a few remarks are necessary concerning the poem and its author. Iqbal is an Indian Moslem. During his stay in the West he studied modern philosophy, in which subject he holds degrees from the Universities of Cambridge and Munich. His dissertation on the development of metaphysics in Persia-an illuminating sketch-appeared as a book in 1908. Since then he has developed a philosophy of his own, on which I am able to give some extremely interesting notes communicated by himself. Of this, however, the Asrar-i Khudi gives no systematic account, though it puts his ideas in a popular and attractive form. While the Hindu philosophers, in explaining the doctrine of the unity of being, addressed themselves to the head, Iqbal, like the Persian poets who teach the same doctrine, takes a more dangerous course and aims at the heart. He is no mean poet, and his verse can rouse or persuade even if his logic fail to convince. His message is not for the Mohammedans of India alone, but for Moslems everywhere: accordingly he writes in Persian instead of Hindustani-a happy choice, for amongst educated Moslems there are many familiar with Persian literature, while the Persian language is singularly well adapted to express philosophical ideas in a style at once elevated and charming.

Book excerpt: This book (thesis) written by Dr. Hira Lall Chopra is a translation of the Bhagavat Gita in Persian, submitted to Tehran University, Iran, where he was awarded Bhagavat the D.Litt. degree. Dr. Chopra dazzled the field of Persian Studies in the second half of the 19th century. This thesis was prepared in 9 months and was a great achievement by Dr. Hira Lall Chopra. After comparing these verses with many ones of the Bhagavat Gita (Persian), Dr. Chopra prepared a correct and critical edition with explanations, annotations and discussions of philosophical ideas incurred in the book. The editor has made the text effective by using the idioms and styles of the translated language. What influenced Dr. Chopra to bring out this critical edition was that the Bhagavat Gita’s verses always consoled him and gave him peace of mind. This book will also give peace of mind to other readers in Persian. This book is unique in the first place as the original book is in Sanskrit and was translated into Persian verses(in Masnavi form). Secondly the book is unique as the book has a long introduction with a critical estimate. This book is an Epic and likely to be useful to Persian Academicians, Research Scholars and students of Persian, as the interest is growing in Hindu Philosophy and Religious Thought.

Book excerpt: Asrar-i-Khudi (The Secrets of the Self; published in Persian, 1915) was the first philosophical poetry book of Allama Iqbal, the great poet-philosopher of British India. This book deals mainly with the individual, while his second book Rumuz-i-Bekhudi discusses the interaction between the individual and society. Allama Iqbal's first collection of poetry, the Asrar-e-Khudi (Secrets of the Self) in Persian. The poems emphasise the spirit and self from a religious, spiritual perspective. Many critics have called this Iqbal's finest poetic work In Asrar-e-Khudi, Iqbal has explained his philosophy of "Khudi," or "Self." Iqbal' s use of term "Khudi" is synonymous with the word of "Rooh" as mentioned in the Quran. "Rooh" is that divine spark which is present in every human being and was present in Adam for which God ordered all of the angels to prostrate in front of Adam. However, one has to make a great journey of transformation to realize that divine spark which Iqbal calls "Khudi". A similitude of this journey could be understood by the relationship of fragrance and seed. Every seed has the potential for fragrance within it. But to reach its fragrance the seed must go through all the different changes and stages. First breaking out of its shell. Then breaking the ground to come into the light developing roots at the same time. Then fighting against the elements to develop leaves and flowers. Finally reaching its pinnacle by attaining the fragrance that was hidden within it. In the same way, to reach one's khudi or rooh one needs to go through multiple stages which Iqbal himself went through, spiritual path which he encourages others to travel. He notes that not all seeds reach the level of fragrance. Many die along the way, incomplete. In the same way, only few people could climb this Mount Everest of spirituality, most get consumed along the way by materialism. The same concept had been used by the Medieval poet and philosopher Farid ud-Din Attar of Nishapur in his "Mantaq-ul-Tair" ("The Conference of the Birds"). Iqbal proves by various means that the whole universe obeys the will of the "Self." He condemns self-destruction. For him, the aim of life is self-realization and self-knowledge. He charts the stages through which the "Self" has to pass before finally arriving at its point of perfection, enabling the knower of the "Self" to become the vicegerent of God. (wikipedia.org)

Book excerpt: Arthur Schopenhauer was the first Western thinker who incorporated thoughts of the Upanishads in his own philosophy. His appreciation for Indian philosophy and culture is quite well known. Presently serious research work is going on in different disciplines in different academic institutions and universities in the West to examine the influence of Indian philosophy and culture in the philosophical thinking of Germany, particularly in relation to Arthur Schopenhauer and vice versa. This book provides a common platform for interaction to the scholars from East and West to express their views on the link between Eastern and Western philosophy. It significantly contributes to a better understanding not only of the connection between Schopenhauer and Indian philosophical systems but also of the increasing interest in this relation. The book includes papers of eminent scholars. The papers shed new light on the relationship between Schopenhauer's philosophy and the different aspects of Indian philosophy and culture, and thus offer a rich source of research material.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1915, this collection features a selection of songs by the poet Kabir, one of the most interesting personalities in the history of Indian mysticism. Author: Rabindranath Tagore Language: English Keywords: Literature / Poetry / Hinduism Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Obscure Press are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. Contents Include: First Edition February 1915 THE poet Kabir, a selection from whose songs is here for the first time offered to English readers, is one of the most interesting personalities in the history of Indian mysticism. Born in or near Benares, of Mohammedan parents, and probably about the year 1440, he became in early life a disciple of the celebrated Hindu ascetic Rama nanda. Ramananda had brought to Northern India the religious revival which Ramanuja, the great twelfth century reformer of Brahmanism, had initiated in the South. This revival was in part a reaction against the increasing formalism of the orthodox cult, in part an assertion of the de mands of the heart as against the intense intellectualism of the Vedanta philosophy, the exaggerated monism which that philosophy proclaimed. It took in Ramanujas preaching the form of an ardent personal devotion to the God Vishnu, as representing the personal aspect of the Divine Nature : that mystical ct religion of love which everywhere makes its appearance at a certain level of spiritual culture, and which creeds and philosophies are powerless to kill. Though such a devotion is in digenous. in Hinduism, and finds expression in many passages of the Bhagavad Gita, there was in its mediaeval revival a large element of syncretism. Ramananda, through whom its spirit is said to have reached Kabir, appears to have been a man of wide religious culture, and full of rnissionary enthusiasm. Living at the moment in which the impassioned poetry and deep philosophy of the great Persian mystics, Attar, Sadi, Jalaluddin Rumi, and Hafiz, were exercising a powerful influence on the religious thought of India, he dreamed of reconciling this intense and personal Mohammedan mysticism with the traditional theology of Brah monism. Some have regarded both. these great religious leaders as in fluenced also by Christian thought and life : but as this is a point upon which. competent authorities hold widely divergent views, its discussion is not attempted here. We may safely assert, however, that in their teach ings, twoperhaps threeapparently antagonistic streams of intense spiritual culture met, as Jewish and IIcllemstic thought met in the early Christian Church : and it is one of the outstanding characteristics of Kabirs genius that he was able in his poems to fuse them into one. A great religious reformer, the founder of a sect to which nearly a million northern Hindus still belong,. it is yet supremely as a mystical poet that Kabir lives for us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sufism is a school for the actualization of divine ethics. It involves an enlightened inner being, not intellectual proof; revelation and witnessing, not logic. By divine ethics, we are referring to ethics that transcend mere social convention, a way of being that is the actualization of the attributes of God. To explain the Truth is indeed a difficult task. Words, being limited, can never really express the perfection of the Absolute, the Unbound. Thus, for those who are imperfect, words create doubt and misunderstanding. Yet: If one cannot drink up the entire ocean, one can drink to one's limit. Philosophers have written volumes and spoken endlessly of the Truth, but somehow their efforts have always fallen short. For the sufi, philosophers are those who view the Perfection of the Absolute from a limited perspective; so all they see is part of the Absolute, not the Infinite in its entirety. It is indeed true that what philosophers see is correct; nevertheless, it is only a part of the whole. One is reminded of Rumi's well-known story of a group of men in India who had never seen an elephant. One day they came to a place where an elephant was. In complete darkness they approached the animal, each man feeling it. Afterwards, they described what they thought they had perceived. Of course their descriptions were different. The one who felt a leg, imagined the elephant to be a pillar. The one who felt the animal's ear, described the elephant as a fan, and so on. Each one of their descriptions with respect to the various parts they had experienced was true. However, as far as accurately describing the whole, their conceptions had all fallen short. If they had had a candle, the difference of opinions would not have come about. The candle's light would have revealed the elephant as a whole. Only by the light of the Spiritual Path and the mystic way can the Truth be discovered. In order for one to truly witness the Perfection of the Absolute, one must see with one's inner being, which perceives the whole of Reality. This witnessing happens when one becomes perfect, losing one's (partial) existence in the Whole. If the Whole is likened to the Ocean, and the part to a drop, the sufi says that witnessing the Ocean with the eye of a drop is impossible. However, when the drop becomes one with the Ocean, it sees the Ocean with the eye of the Ocean.

Book excerpt: "The Other World" is the poem translation of Javed Nama, Persian poem by Sir Dr. Muhammad Iqbal, the philosopher poet of the East.Iqbal's magnum opus, writes his biographer S. A. Vahid, is Javed Nama. Javed Nama presents an account of journey, performed by the Truth-seeking Soul, in the world of Soul, which begins from earth and going through the 'spheres' of the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn and beyond the 'spheres' ending at Presence in the Divine Court. It is an endeavored output of Iqbal which aims at exaltation of the human Soul, making it take off from the given ground-zero i.e. the baser level. With the same mission, in fact, he went for walk beyond the horizons, to the world of Soul, under the guidance of Rumi, the exalted saint of 12th Century. It was for our training that he inferred beneficence from those Souls which had departed this mortal podium, centuries ago, after detecting the secret of life, and who could and were to untie the enigmatic knots which had stuck the way of Iqbal. Having these knots untied the result put on pages was the Persian verse titled Javed Nama.Viewing this output of Iqbal from the aspect of knowhow on reality of life the chapters pertaining to the celebrities, of international fame, Tolstoy from Russia, German philosopher poet Nietzsche departed (1900) and Lord Kitchener of England dialogue with Indian Ascetic Jehan Dost, Ali Hamadani and Sultan Tipu Shaheed are important. And viewing it from the aspect of its contribution towards humanism and politics amongst the Nations, comparison in the systems of governance namely Imperialism, socialism and Western democracy and presentation of alternate system of governance, which in fact the Creator likes to enforce on earth, the chapters pertaining to message of grandee soul Jamal-ud-Din Afghani (1838-1897) to the Russian Nation is important.Above all going through the contents of this given word would simply mean that you went for a walk in the World of Soul and witnessed the spirits in live dialogue forth.Where wherever possible the metaphysical and philosophical subtleties are explained visually by the Author Artist through, the salient features of this Book are,* Visit to the present station of the German Philosopher Nietzsche and reflection of his present state, in the other world, and slogan beaten by him continuously.* Visitation of the Spirits of Jamal-ud-Din Afghani (departed 1897) and Saeed Halim Pasha (departed 1921) reflect on the true concept of Religion and Homeland, Socialism and Capitalism, East and the West, Sketch of Godly Governance.
