Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Long thought to be the oldest of all terrier breeds, the sleek and sturdy yet elegant Manchester Terrier is prized as a beloved companion dog and an eye-catching show dog. Fearlessness, keenness and endurance made this muscular little breed from England a storied hunter of vermin during the Industrial Revolution, though today he is rarely used as a working dog. A descendant of the original Black and Tan Terrier from England, the Manchester Terrier is regarded as the foundation of various other breeds, including the popular Doberman Pinscher. Though other black and tan dogs have surpassed the Manchester in popularity, no breed excels this gentleman’s breed in agility, elegance or devotion. This Special Limited Edition, written by terrier expert and breeder Muriel P. Lee, surveys the Manchester’s history in England and traces the breed to the shores of the United States, where it is separated into two varieties, Standard and Toy, identical except for size and ears. The author also discusses the Manchester Terrier’s characteristics and breed standard. New owners will find advice on choosing a breeder and well-bred puppy as well as information on feeding, exercise, house-training and basic obedience. A thorough, up-to-date chapter on canine healthcare, written by veterinarian Dr. Lowell Ackerman, covers topics including veterinarian selection, vaccinations, preventive care and parasite control."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *An Instant New York Times Bestseller!* A memoir of love and loss, of being in the right place at the right time, and of the mysterious ways a beloved pet can bring people together, from CBS Sunday Morning News correspondent and multi-Emmy-Award-winning Martha Teichner. There are true fairy tales. Stories that exist because impossible-to-explain coincidences change everything. Except in real life, not all of them have conventional, happily-ever-after endings. When Harry Met Minnie is that kind of fairy tale, with the vibrant, romantic New York City backdrop of its namesake, the movie When Harry Met Sally, and the bittersweet wisdom of Tuesdays with Morrie. There’s a special camaraderie among early-morning dog walkers. Gathering at dog runs in the park, or strolling through the farmer's market at Union Square before the bustling crowd appears, fellow pet owners become familiar–as do the personalities of their beloved animals. In this special space and time, a chance encounter with an old acquaintance changed Martha Teichner’s world. As fate would have it, her friend knew someone who was dying of cancer, from exposure to toxins after 9/11, and desperate to find a home for her dog, Harry. He was a Bull Terrier—the same breed as Martha’s dear Minnie. Would Martha consider giving Harry a safe, loving new home? In short order, boy dog meets girl dog, the fairy tale part of this story. But there is so much more to this book. After Martha agrees to meet Harry and his owner Carol, what begins as a transaction involving a dog becomes a deep and meaningful friendship between two women with complicated lives and a love of Bull Terriers in common. Through the heartbreak and grief of Carol’s illness, the bond that develops changed Martha’s life, Carol’s life, Minnie’s life, Harry’s life. As it changed Carol’s death as well. In this rich and touching narrative, Martha considers the ways our stories are shaped by the people we meet, and the profound love we can find by opening our hearts to unexpected encounters.

Book excerpt: This book (Terrier Group) provides you with the thorough descriptions and positive attributes of these breeds, including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors, and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known, predisposed hereditary health syndromes for these breeds. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for these breeds and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small-animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life, and I am further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed, with aerodynamic bodies consisting of a small head, deep chest, narrow waist, and large leg muscles. On the other hand, dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog, and they use their long nose, long body, and short legs to both track, enter, and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspiration for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically, references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various veterinary medical texts and journals, such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular, and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, has been researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposed information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club, Canine Health Foundation, and the Kennel Club of England report over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. During the writing of my first book in 1983, less than fifty hereditary issues were able to be predicted or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome; DNA tests; metabolic testing, including blood tests and urine testing; and phenotypic examinations, such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified veterinary ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed-related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners, and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.
