Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Jodi Thomas has captivated America with her novels set in the small town of Harmony, Texas. Now she tells the story of the three hard-luck men who first settled the town, a place where last chances and long-awaited dreams collide… Desperate to escape his overbearing father, Patrick McAllen disappears with his bride, heading north to build a new town—discovering strength, honor and true love along the way. After drinking away the grief from his family’s death, Clint Truman avoids jail by taking a job in North Texas and settling down with a woman he vows to protect but never love—until her quiet compassion slowly breaks his hardened heart wide open… All Gillian Matheson has ever known is Army life, leaving his true love to be a part-time spouse. But when a wounded Gillian returns home to find her desperately fighting to save their marriage, he’s determined to become the husband she deserves. Amidst storms, outlaws, and unwelcome relatives, the three couples band together to build a town—and form a bond that breathes life into the place that will forever be called Harmony.

Book excerpt: A new adventure begins on Harmony… With its opulent casinos and hotels, the desert city of Illusion Town is totally unique—and will take you on a thrill ride you’ll never forget. Hannah West isn’t the first woman to wake up in Illusion Town married to a man she barely knows, but she has no memory of the ceremony at all. For that matter, neither does Elias Coppersmith, her new husband. All either can remember is that they were on the run… With Hannah’s dubious background and shaky para-psych profile, she could have done much worse. The cooly competent mining heir arouses her curiosity—as well as other parts of her mind and body. And even her dust bunny likes him. But a honeymoon spent retracing their footsteps leads Hannah and Elias into the twisting underground catacombs, where secrets from both their pasts will come to light—and where the energy of their clashing auras will grow hot enough to burn…

He shows how the dilemmas of race still exert a powerful hold on American life, even in one of the first communities to voluntarily integrate its schools 25 years ago, and contrasts the idealism of the past with new realities.

Book excerpt: A heartfelt middle-grade novel from New York Times bestselling author Barbara O’Connor about a boy whose life is upended after the loss of his older brother—timeless, classic, and whimsical. Walter Tipple is looking for adventure. He keeps having a dream that his big brother, Tank, appears before him and says, “Let’s you and me go see my world, little man.” But Tank went to the army and never came home, and Walter doesn’t know how to see the world without him. Then he meets Posey, the brash new girl from next door, and an eccentric man named Banjo, who’s off on a bodacious adventure of his own. What follows is a summer of taking chances, becoming braver, and making friends—and maybe Walter can learn who he wants to be without the brother he always wanted to be like. Halfway to Harmony is an utterly charming story about change and growing up. Book excerpt: An adventurous slice of waterfront life where mystery surrounds history. A sweet story with likeable characters. If you're looking for a pleasant read about a single mom and her son discovering the charm of a small town, mixed with bits of history, romance and adventure, this one's for you! Gahan uses vivid descriptions of the details of boating, fishing and aquatic life, as well as the physical and psychological makeup of this fictional bayside community. Relationships combine with places to play a part in James' life story. James' character is forged by events and his adventures in Harmony Bay. From harrowing life and death experiences on the water to forays into the surrounding hills, each day dawns with a new lesson about life. The boy encounters many wonderful individuals in his new home town. Among them are a magnificent Newfoundland retriever dog named Angus--and Chloe, a beautiful white mare. Angus' master Billy is a kindly closet intellectual and philosophizer who is a physically powerful man strong enough to split firewood with a single blow of his ancient axe. His snowy white beard and recluse nature causes speculation about his identity. Marine biologist Jake Kane is the local hero who sweeps Dory off her feet, adding an element of romance to the story. James learns a great deal from Jake and the dozens of other colorful inhabitants of this amazing waterfront community. Harmony Bay, written for a wide audience that appeals to many levels, examines a slice of small-town life. A modern day mystery, drawn from covert events of the American Revolution, weaves through the story. Ten-year-old James McDonough moves from the crime and violence of the inner-city to a New Englandish East Coast town, Harmony Bay. His widowed mother, Dory, has taken a position as a librarian in this small town. Its economy is driven by the whims of nature, nor'easters boiling down the coast, hurricanes lurking off shore, and the barometric rise and fall of shellfish prices.

Book excerpt: In the tranquil haven of Harmony Bay, where the lapping waves compose a soothing symphony against the glistening shores, a tale of rekindled passions and rediscovered purpose unfolds. Within this idyllic coastal town, the meeting of two souls, both adrift in the turbulent currents of their lives, sets the stage for an extraordinary journey of self-discovery and love. Amidst the gentle embrace of the ocean breeze, Richard Mitchell, a once-celebrated musician, now a disillusioned wanderer, finds solace along the rugged coastline. His heartache and thwarted dreams find an unexpected outlet as he crafts exquisite instruments from the remnants of forgotten treasures washed ashore. Little does he know that these unique creations will weave together the destinies of individuals far beyond the confines of his quiet sanctuary. Gianna Hartman, a renowned music producer haunted by the trappings of success, hears whispers of Richard's unconventional artistry. These echoes of melodies that defy convention stir a dormant passion within her, and she embarks on a journey to Harmony Bay to unearth the source. When their paths finally cross, it's as if the universe itself orchestrated their encounter, drawing them together in pursuit of a shared destiny. The harmony they create is not limited to the music that emanates from Richard's reclaimed instruments; it extends to the cadence of their hearts finding resonance in one another. As their collaborative efforts in music flourish, so too does an unspoken connection that transcends words. But the path they tread is not without discord. The tumultuous undercurrents of fame, the haunting shadows of past failures, and the relentless demands of the music industry threaten to drown out the delicate notes of their love story. In 'Harmony's Heartbeat,' the reimagined notes of salvaged instruments intertwine with the rhythm of love and perseverance. The resulting symphony is more than an arrangement of musical notes, it's a testament to the healing potency of melodies, a celebration of human connection through art, and a reminder that even the most discordant of circumstances can be transformed into harmonious tunes with the right companionship. Join Richard and Gianna as they navigate the tempestuous waters of fame, passion, and self-discovery. Feel the resonance of their journey as it reverberates through the pages of this heartwarming tale, reminding us all that amidst life's chaos, the music of the heart can guide us to our own harmonious ever after.

Book excerpt: In 1718, a young woman named Moricette Nayl fought with her brother’s mother-in-law and accidentally killed her. Ruled a homicide, the incident set in motion an investigation, a trial, Moricette's flight from justice, an execution in effigy and, ultimately, the pardon of the killer and her reintegration into the community. Based on the detailed records of the court dossier, this microhistory reveals the social networks of a small town, the history of interpersonal violence, the complex criminal justice system at work, and the power of restoring harmony after a tragedy of this magnitude. An enduring mystery is the reluctance of those closest to the crime to participate in the legal process. An explanation for their silence sheds light on the turmoil of the criminal justice system in France in the decades leading up to the French Revolution. Neither independent feudal lords nor an elite tamed by an Absolutist king, the gentlemen overseeing justice in this place maintained a delicate balance between their personal power and the rule of law. The incident and its aftermath also reveal the bonds that make community possible, even in the face of senseless violence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly seven decades, Jane Blaffer Owen was the driving force behind the restoration and revitalization of the town of New Harmony, Indiana. In this delightful memoir, Blaffer Owen describes the transformational effect the town had on her life. An oil heiress from Houston, she met and married Kenneth Dale Owen, great-great-grandson of Robert Owen, founder of a communal society in New Harmony. When she visited the then dilapidated town with her husband in 1941, it was love at first sight, and the story of her life and the life of the town became intertwined. Her engaging account of her journey to renew the town provides glimpses into New Harmony's past and all of its citizens—scientists, educators, and naturalists—whose influence spread far beyond the town limits. And there are fascinating stories of the artists, architects, and theologians who became part of Blaffer Owen's life at New Harmony, where, she says, "My roots could sink deeply and spread."

Book excerpt: Two besties and a baby make for an instafamily and a surprising romance in a delightful series by Melissa Foster, the New York Times bestselling author of the Sugar Lake novels. Ben Dalton has always been honest, except where his heart is concerned. He's been in love with his best friend--saucy, smart-mouthed Aurelia Stark--forever. But Ben's a planner, and timing has never been on his side. When he finally decides to make his move, Aurelia beats him to the punch with a move of her own--to a different town. Aurelia loves her new life in the charming town of Harmony Pointe. She has a great apartment and her very own bookstore, and best of all, the sinfully hot, commitment-phobic friend she's crushed on for years is no longer just around the corner. Maybe she'll finally be able to leave her unrequited love behind and move on. But when a baby is left on Ben's front porch--a baby that is presumably his--Aurelia is there for him. Neither one knows the first thing about babies, but how hard can it be? Ben and Aurelia are catapulted into a world of love, laughter, and tracking down the baby mama, and it might even add up to a very happily ever after... just not one either of them expects.

Book excerpt: The remarkable architecture in the Harmony National Historic Landmark District reflects the town's German roots. In the early 1800s, German Lutheran separatists, led by Johann Georg Rapp, purchased depreciation lands from a German nobleman and founded Harmony. They organized as the communal Harmony Society in 1805, pledging to live as a family until Christ's return. The industrious Harmonists prospered, traveled to Washington to confer with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, and gained international fame for their lifestyle and economic success. By 1811, they owned 9,000 acres and had constructed 130 buildings. Their main street was on the direct route from Pittsburgh to Erie during the War of 1812. Harmony's colorful past includes the Mennonite, oil boom, and electric interurban train eras. Maj. George Washington slept near here in 1753 and narrowly escaped being shot by a native guide. Among notable residents were songwriter Stephen Foster, professional baseball pitcher George "Rube" Waddell, and gunsmith Charles Flowers.
