Download or read book Building Europe written by Wilfried Loth and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relying on internal sources, Wilfried Loth analyses the birth and subsequent development of the European Union, from the launch of the Council of Europe and the Schuman Declaration until the Euro crisis and the contested European presidential election of Jean-Claude Juncker. This book shines a light on the crises of the European integration, such as the failure of the European Defence Community, De Gaulle’s empty chair policy, or the rejection of the European Constitution in France and the Netherlands, but also highlights the indubitable successes that are the Franco-German reconciliation, the establishment of the European common market, and the establishment of an expanding common currency. What this study accomplishes, for the first time, is to illuminate the driving forces behind the European integration process and how it changed European politics and society. “An enlightening work. Arequired reading for all who doubt the unfinished history of Europe.” – Rolf Steininger, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. “This book will become an indispensable standard work.” – Jörg Himmelreich, Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic (CEECs) are candidates to join an enlarged European Union (EU) in the years to come. The ten are Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia. This enlargement will bring many opportunities to the both the EU and the candidate countries. For the EU it will bring enhanced weight and influence. For the candidate countries it should mean an improvement of their long term growth prospects by providing access to an open single market. The accession process is providing the impetus for the acceleration of much needed economic, political, institutional and social reforms in some of the CEECs as they strive to meet EU membership requirements. The key for the CEECs is to achieve sustained, high long-term growth in order to meet their ultimate objective of accession. The EU has already concluded agreements with the CEECs which went beyond the narrowly conceived ideas of market access to include the alignment of the CEEC economic system with that of the EU's. This report sets out the future agenda for the successful integration of the CEECs into an enlarged EU. The first priority is for each country to complete its own process of transition to a free market democratic state. In short this will mean that many will have to address: their fiscal challenges, and ensure fiscal sustainability; the challenge of global financial integration, opening of their capital accounts; the strengthening of their administrative capacity; the reduction of unemployment; and the promotion of social inclusion.

Book Synopsis Conditions of European Solidarity: What holds Europe together? by : Krzysztof Michalski
Download or read book Conditions of European Solidarity: What holds Europe together? written by Krzysztof Michalski and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses contemporary developments in European identity politics as part of a larger historical trajectory of a common European identity based on the idea of 'solidarity.' The authors explain the special sense in which Europeans perceive their obligations to their less fortunate compatriots, to the new East European members, and to the world at large. An understanding of this notion of 'solidarity' is critical to understanding the specific European commitment to social justice and equality. The specificity of this term helps to distinguish between what the Germans call "social state" from the Anglo-Saxon, and particularly American, political and social system focused on capitalism and economic liberalism. This collection is the result of the work of an extremely distinguished group of scholars and politicians, invited by the previous President of the European Union, Romano Prodi, to reflect on some of the most important subjects affecting the future of Europe.
