Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Peace When I was asked last August to prepare a book on the terms of peace, I consented to have it ready by March, 1919. My publishers thought that it should be ready by February first if it was to anticipate the march of events. The writing was completed in October, but even so, events have gotten ahead. It is some consolation to know that the whole world shares in this miscalculation. Neither the peoples nor their governments, the knowing ones who had all the inside information, were prepared for this headlong precipitancy. A letter from one of the staff of the Department of State at Washington expresses the surprise, not to say the consternation, of the government at this sudden development for which we were so eager and yet so utterly unprepared. It was in anticipation of this unpreparedness that the book was written, and yet I too am caught among the unprepared. Naturally I have considered carefully whether any change should be made in the text as the proofs pass through my hands, but save for a few footnotes and minor changes, I have left it as it was written. The difficulty in the phraseology, - all of it appropriate to the situation of last September, - is pervasive. Adaptation to the situation of today would mean re-writing. But it is only the phraseology that the armistice has rendered out of date. The problems remain, - not one of them settled despite confident and contradictory newspaper assertion. Even the signing of the treaty of peace, an event for which we must perhaps long wait in patience, will bring to most of them no immediate solution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Peace: Being a New Year's Greeting to Our Motherland and the Nations at Present in Conflict and a Welcome to Them All to the Feast of the Great Peace And the men who feel themselves called or impelled so to fight are yet under the law of this present world order, and they would certainly be doing a serious and great wrong, both to their own soul or real nature, and to their country, by shirking their responsibility in refus ing so to fight. For theirs, too, is an inner or divine urge or inspiring force, but it is not the Christly urge. It is yet of the Genius of the world-soul or present order. But if we are in the Christ-degree we are under the law of Christ, and the righteousness of the Christ-order, and that alone, can we fulfil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The League of Nations: The Way to the World's Peace The German banner of the World's Peace - the Reichstag's Peace Resolution of the 19th July, 1917 - bears these devices: "Peace by understanding and lasting reconciliation of the Nations." "The Reichstag will energetically promote the establishment of the guarantees of international jurisprudence." This was the oath of allegiance to the League of Nations, which since then has made its triumphant progress throughout the world, although it has also made its appearance, under various guises, in isolated countries. In this volume it will he considered, in detail, how the Reichstag Resolution is to be carried into effect in everyday life; how the way may be cleared for the peace of the world. This book will arouse much opposition, and will encounter many criticisms, but may nevertheless conduce to the elucidation of the subject, for we can no longer make any further headway to-day by means of catchwords and headlines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genesis of War and the Foundation of Peace In proceeding to disentangle and lay straight in our understanding the elements of any one of the complex problems that harass the life of the race, it is necessary to trace pres ent conditions from the1r pomt of origin. It may be said, strictly, that the finite mind is not capable of dealing with origins. But we can greatly aid our thinking by excluding inc1 dentals and thereby reducing the complexity of the problem to its simplest terms; we can return, in our thought, to that stage of de velopment Where human life included only the simple, fundamental relations and experi ences. Today it includes essentially no more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Fourth Year: Anticipations of a World Peace In the latter half of 1914 a few of us were writing that this war was a "War of Ideas." A phrase, "The War to end War," got into circulation, amidst much sceptical comment. It was a phrase powerful enough to sway many men, essentially pacifists, towards taking an active part in the war against German imperialism, but it was a phrase whose chief content was its aspiration. People were already writing in those early days of disarmament and of the abolition of the armament industry throughout the world; they realized fully the element of industrial belligerency behind the shining armour of imperialism, and they denounced the "Krupp-Kaiser" alliance. But against such writing and such thought we had to count, in those days, great and powerful realities. Even to those who expressed these ideas there lay visibly upon them the shadow of impracticability; they were very "advanced" ideas in 1914, very Utopian. Against them was an unbroken mass of mental habit and public tradition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Towards Peace As this little volume of Essays Towards Peace is the first ever put before the public for the purpose of expressing definitely and explicitly the Ration alist point of view, it is desirable to preface it with some account of the position of Rationalists on this great problem of the proper and effective method of settling international disputes. This is indeed not merely desirable, but necessary, because until the formation of the Rationalist Peace Society in 1910 the work of Rationalists has been merged in that of existing organizations, which are either run definitely in connection with particular religious bodies, or which associate themselves to a greater or less degree with reli gious in uences. As a consequence, Rationalists have found their work not only annexed without acknowledgment, but actually claimed as peculiarly Christian, and have had to hear it repeated ad nauseam that Christianity is synonymous with Peace, and that none but Christian peoples abhor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through War to Peace: A Study of the Great War as an Incident in the Evolution of Society There is a growing sentiment in this country that what Germany has come to stand for is utterly irreconcilable - freedom, democracy, humanity, Christianity - which we most prize; that it represents a grave menace to them all. This sentiment, with its attendant foreboding, I believe to be substantially correct, so that it will bear examination in the light of reason and science. I think it can be shown that the German code of international behavior constitutes a direct and grave challenge to the essentials of civilization; that it is a reversion toward an earlier and cruder phase of societal if civilization is to go forward on its normal course. If reason is to be found back of this popular presentiment, that fact will confer a certain solidity and surety upon what we might otherwise, in the face of specious argument or unpleasant consequences, cleave to less tenaciously. It will lead to the strengthening of hearts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the Peace Movement The Bishop of Hereford, who came to the United States in 1904 to attend the International Peace Congress in Boston, has been emphasizing in England, in addresses Since that time, the importance of the contributions Of the United States to the peace movement. He has said that the United States itself is, in his judgment, the greatest and most influential peace society in the world, because it illustrates over a broader area and with greater power than is anywhere else the case the beneficent Operation Of the three great principles of interstate free trade, an interstate court, and federation, which are all that is necessary to extend to international affairs to give us precisely the kind of organized world that we want. He has also been telling his English breth ren that he counts it a capital misfortune that they are not more familiar than most Of them are with the writings Of Sumner and Charming and the other great leaders Of the peace movement in the United States during the last century. We in America know too well that this unfortunate unfamiliarity is not confined to Englishmen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But, in order that everything possible may be done to avoid these evils in the future, it is necessary that those who influence the opinion of the various nations should have a clear apprehension of all the means which are available for the preservation of peace, and, at the same time, that they should appreciate the danger of placing excessive reliance upon the efficacy of any particular measure. At present there appears to be a disposition on the part of many generous minds to believe that the formation of a League of Nations for the purpose of preventing wars will in itself result in the practical maintenance of general peace. It certainly, indeed, seems probable that a confederacy of this kind, which has been advocated by several great thinkers in the course of the last few centuries, will be actually established at no distant date.
