Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the performance limitation issues in networked feedback systems. The fact that networked feedback systems consist of control and communication devices and systems calls for the integration of control theory and information theory. The primary contributions of this book lie in two aspects: the newly-proposed information-theoretic measures and the newly-discovered control performance limitations. We first propose a number of information notions to facilitate the analysis. Using those notions, classes of performance limitations of networked feedback systems, as well as state estimation systems, are then investigated. In general, the book presents a unique, cohesive treatment of performance limitation issues of networked feedback systems via an information-theoretic approach. This book is believed to be the first to treat the aforementioned subjects systematically and in a unified manner, offering a unique perspective differing from existing books.

Book excerpt: Witchweeds (Striga species) decimate agriculture in much of Africa and parts of Asia, attacking the major cereal grains and legumes, and halving the already very low yields of subsistence farmers. Several years of research have provided promising technologies, based on the fundamental biology of the parasite-host associations, for dealing with this scourge. However, there is an apparent realization that these technologies will fail because highly successful weeds such as Striga evolve resistance to all types of controls unless proven methods are integrated with each other for a more sustainable solution.Integration is often an anathema to basic scientists who typically deal with single variables and solutions. However, key leaders in the development of the new knowledge-based control strategies, already in the field and under development, recently joined forces to develop strategies and projects in order to integrate the technologies in a symposium in Ethiopia in November 2006. The encouraging results are described in this peer-reviewed book, authored by leaders in the field who have been supplying the basic biology, genetics, biochemistry, and molecular information that have offered insights and generated technologies in how to deal with Striga.

Book excerpt: S2The Universities of Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, in cooperation with the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, initiated in 1959-60 a study of the effects of site and stocking on the growth of eastern white pine. The primary purposes of the study were to develop equations for: (1) predicting the volume increment per acre of pure, even-aged, white pine stands from observable characteristics of the stand, soil, and topography; and (2) predicting the increment of individual white pine trees related to characteristics of the tree, stand, and site. By 1965, measurements of stand growth and development for a 3-year period were available from nearly all field plots. A preliminary analysis revealed that one or more additional remeasurements should be taken before a final summary of the periodic growth of trees and stands is made. Nevertheless, useful and accurate relationships were developed between stand yield, or volumes per acre, and stand age, site, and stocking; and this information is presented in this paper. Yield tables based on the plot data from New Hampshire, using stand height in place of age and site index, have been published by Barrett and Allen (1966).S3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the accounting change processes that drive integrated reporting in the public sector. The Integrated Report is a tool that allows public sector entities to quantify and convey those aspects of their organization, strategy, governance and performance that lead to the creation of public value over time. To be successfully introduced, integrated reporting must follow a specific path of accounting change. The context in which public sector entities operate, and the unique relationship between the public sector and the environment, redefine the accounting process of change to deliver an integrated report. The authors provide a fresh look at integrated reporting on the basis of the accounting change processes that drive it, helping academics and practitioners to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and benefits in terms of public value creation.

Book excerpt: How should firms’ control systems be designed and used to formulate and implement strategies that will contribute to competitive advantage and sustained high performance? This book offers some thought-provoking suggestions. It contains empirical studies of such diverse manufacturing enterprises as Atlas Copco, Electrolux, Saab, Scania, SCA Packing and Volvo, as well as an insurance company and two chamber orchestras. All firms and organizations presented offer interesting and exciting insights, each in a specific way and each with a fascinating history. The book presents research on the relationship between strategy, control and competitive advantage over extended periods and at several strategic levels, while also taking into account the existence of multiple control systems in a single firm or other organization. Readers are offered an in-depth look into how changes in the environment lead to adjustments in strategies and control systems. It is shown, in addition, how difficult and challenging it can be to implement these changes, and why such efforts are not always successful. But perhaps most importantly, the book conveys an in-depth understanding of how strategies and control systems affect competitive advantage and performance. In both its coverage and focus, the book is unique. Not only does it provide valuable contributions to the research field of strategy and management control; it also represents a substantial commitment in terms of resources and involvement over an extended period. The book is highly recommended to researchers, practitioners, graduate students and all others interested in this area.

Politicians, police and people dealing with public issues now fear journalists like devils from a different world. So they try to use their power to curtail the freedom of the press. The proposed IT amendment is a step in this direction.

Book excerpt: Physical, safety and technological constraints suggest that control actuators can neither provide unlimited amplitude signals nor unlimited speed of reaction. The techniques described in this book are useful for industrial applications in aeronautical or space domains, and in the context of biological systems. Such methods are well suited for the development of tools that help engineers to solve analysis and synthesis problems of control systems with input and output constraints.
