Download or read book North Korea written by Sonia Ryang and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009-01-16 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are told, time and again, that North Koreans are loyal to their leader, that they would do anything, even die for him, and that they are fiercely proud and nationalistic. But to an equal extent, we are told that they are oppressed, suffering, and ready to rise against the evil dictator. What do we know beyond or between these opposing assumptions? We are not well equipped with the conceptual tools that could lead us beyond the current securitization of our discourses on North Korea, while undercurrents of regarding North Koreans as less human continue in these discourses. This volume attempts to multiply the angles from which we can look at North Korea by reassessing the international environment in which it is placed, the process of production of its culture, and the historical paths it has followed. Due to the new approach the volume takes, reading these pages will be an eye-opening experience not only for experts, but also for lay readers and anyone interested in peace keeping in Korea, Northeast Asia, and beyond.

This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes how companies and employees can endogenously, i.e., without hiring external experts or consultants, achieve competitive advantages by deviating from behavioral standards in a productive way. The study explores eight transformative behavioral innovations that shaped the development of sports and, by analogy, uses the findings to advance solutions for prevalent problems in business. By developing triggers to creativity and applying mechanisms on how to overcome innovation resistance, the book gives concrete advice on how to manage the difficult quest of human transformation beyond the imperative of technological innovation.

Book Synopsis Survey Research Designs: Towards a Better Understanding of Their Costs and Benefits by : Robert W. Pearson
Download or read book Survey Research Designs: Towards a Better Understanding of Their Costs and Benefits written by Robert W. Pearson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ROBERT F. BORUCH AND ROBERT W. PEARSON During the 13th Century. a vigorous argument among Middle Eastern rabbis concerned how one ought to make a fair assessment of an olive crop value for tithing purposes. Should one consolidate the crop. systematically mix the olives. and then conscientiously draw a small random sample? Or. might one simply grab a handful of olives from the nearest basket and make an estimate of the crop's worth. The issue. of course. is one that research designers and research users confront often -- balancing the need for information against the resources that must be put into actually collecting the data -- in deciding how much effort is warranted to produce fair evidence. For the rabbis. who argued for twenty-five years over the matter. the issue can be resolved with a special rule. In this as in other cases. if the demand for information is biblical in origin -- if God is its source. then one ought to be considerably conscientious; a more scientific and more expensive endeavor is warranted. We may at times subscribe to this kind of rule of thumb in determining what quality of information is warranted under what conditions. But other rules and approaches are possible. And as medieval Jewish. Arabic. and Christian philosophy suggests. the alternatives need to be thought out and tested. Our interest is a bit more contemporary but has some spiritual kinship with early scholars' interest in empirical evidence.

Download or read book Trans Kids written by Tey Meadow and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trans Kids is a trenchant ethnographic and interview-based study of the first generation of families affirming and facilitating gender nonconformity in children. Earlier generations of parents sent such children for psychiatric treatment aimed at a cure, but today, many parents agree to call their children new names, allow them to wear whatever clothing they choose, and approach the state to alter the gender designation on their passports and birth certificates. Drawing from sociology, philosophy, psychology, and sexuality studies, sociologist Tey Meadow depicts the intricate social processes that shape gender acquisition. Where once atypical gender expression was considered a failure of gender, now it is a form of gender. Engaging and rigorously argued, Trans Kids underscores the centrality of ever more particular configurations of gender in both our physical and psychological lives, and the increasing embeddedness of personal identities in social institutions.
Book Synopsis Joseph Smith's Polygamy by : Brian C. Hales
Download or read book Joseph Smith's Polygamy written by Brian C. Hales and published by Greg Kofford Books, Incorporated. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last several years a wealth of information has been published on Joseph Smith's practice of polygamy. For some who were already well aware of this aspect of early Mormon history, the availability of new research and discovered documents has been a wellspring of further insight and knowledge into this topic. For others who are learning of Joseph's marriages to other women for the first time, these books and online publications can be both an information overload and a challenge to one's faith. In this short volume, Brian C. Hales (author of the 3-volume Joseph Smith's Polygamy: History and Theology) and Laura H. Hales wade through the murky waters of history to help bring some clarity to this episode of Mormonism's past. As Joseph Smith's participation in plural marriage involved more than just the Prophet and his first wife Emma, this volume also includes short biographical sketches of the 35 other women who were sealed to Joseph but whose stories of faith, struggle, and courage have been largely forgotten and ignored over time. While we may never fully understand the details and reasons surrounding this practice, Brian and Laura Hales provide readers with an accessible, forthright, and faithful look into this challenging topic so that we can at least come toward a better understanding. Praise for Joseph Smith's Polygamy: Toward a Better Understanding "Few matters of LDS history have proven to be as faith-sensitive as Joseph Smith's plural marriages. While a number of efforts have been made in recent years to shed light on this challenging phenomenon, nothing has brought greater clarity, enlightenment, and, particularly for believing Saints, spiritual reassurance, than has the work of researcher Brian Hales. He and his wife Laura have now rendered a monumental service to Mormons and interested observers by bringing clarity and better understanding to this topic. I for one am grateful for the context, perspective, and both straightforward and faithful answers provided for so many of the questions surrounding Nauvoo polygamy. It is a book that will be read and discussed for years to come." - Robert L. Millet, Professor Emeritus of Religious Education, Brigham Young University

Book Synopsis Advancing Towards an Understanding by : Robert L. K. Mazibuko
Download or read book Advancing Towards an Understanding written by Robert L. K. Mazibuko and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prerequisite for being a Bah is to attempt to live a life that is in accordance with the teachings of that faith. In the human condition, one must have a logical explanation for a principle that lends itself to being lived. This is an attempt at stating thoughts in relation to an exalted theme in terms of what one might perceive, given that one has to have logic to the effort of endeavoring to live the ideal. These explanations are not conclusive and may apply for a certain period and a certain kind of person, and they constitute the writers desire to extend his belief to that which can actually be practiced. Spirituality is not imaginary thought but a practicality. The writer acknowledges that the Creator gave us minds to investigate phenomena because they are understandable and did not createpardon the expressionfor the mere purpose of confusing the minds. It is a perception and a belief that He wants us to know and worship Him. As He is eternal, we must strive to advance eternally toward a fuller understanding of all lessons, admitting that we are human and can do only what is humanly possible at any time.
