Book Synopsis Philosophy of Mathematics and Mathematical Practice in the Seventeenth Century by : Paolo Mancosu
Download or read book Philosophy of Mathematics and Mathematical Practice in the Seventeenth Century written by Paolo Mancosu and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-18 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeenth century saw dramatic advances in mathematical theory and practice. With the recovery of many of the classical Greek mathematical texts, new techniques were introduced, and within 100 years, the rules of analytic geometry, geometry of indivisibles, arithmetic of infinites, and calculus were developed. Although many technical studies have been devoted to these innovations, Mancosu provides the first comprehensive account of the relationship between mathematical advances of the seventeenth century and the philosophy of mathematics of the period. Starting with the Renaissance debates on the certainty of mathematics, Mancosu leads the reader through the foundational issues raised by the emergence of these new mathematical techniques, including the influence of the Aristotelian conception of science in Cavalieri and Guldin, the foundational relevance of Descartes' Geometrie, the relation between geometrical and epistemological theories of the infinite, and the Leibnizian calculus and the opposition to infinitesimalist procedures. In the process Mancosu draws a sophisticated picture of the subtle dependencies between technical development and philosophical reflection in seventeenth century mathematics.
Book Synopsis Mathematics Going Forward by : Jean-Michel Morel
Download or read book Mathematics Going Forward written by Jean-Michel Morel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-14 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an original collection of articles by 44 leading mathematicians on the theme of the future of the discipline. The contributions range from musings on the future of specific fields, to analyses of the history of the discipline, to discussions of open problems and conjectures, including first solutions of unresolved problems. Interestingly, the topics do not cover all of mathematics, but only those deemed most worthy to reflect on for future generations. These topics encompass the most active parts of pure and applied mathematics, including algebraic geometry, probability, logic, optimization, finance, topology, partial differential equations, category theory, number theory, differential geometry, dynamical systems, artificial intelligence, theory of groups, mathematical physics and statistics.

Book Synopsis Méthodes mathématiques et numériques pour les équations aux dérivées partielles by : CHASKALOVIC Joël
Download or read book Méthodes mathématiques et numériques pour les équations aux dérivées partielles written by CHASKALOVIC Joël and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Geometries Of Nature, Living Systems And Human Cognition: New Interactions Of Mathematics With Natural Sciences And Humanities by : Luciano Boi
Download or read book Geometries Of Nature, Living Systems And Human Cognition: New Interactions Of Mathematics With Natural Sciences And Humanities written by Luciano Boi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-11-02 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of papers forming this volume is intended to provide a deeper study of some mathematical and physical subjects which are at the core of recent developments in the natural and living sciences. The book explores some far-reaching interfaces where mathematics, theoretical physics, and natural sciences seem to interact profoundly. The main goal is to show that an accomplished movement of geometrisation has enabled the discovery of a great variety of amazing structures and behaviors in physical reality and in living matter. The diverse group of expert mathematicians, physicists and natural scientists present numerous new results and original ideas, methods and techniques. Both academic and interdisciplinary, the book investigates a number of important connections between mathematics, theoretical physics and natural sciences including biology.

Book Synopsis Classics in the History of Greek Mathematics by : Jean Christianidis
Download or read book Classics in the History of Greek Mathematics written by Jean Christianidis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century is the period during which the history of Greek mathematics reached its greatest acme. Indeed, it is by no means exaggerated to say that Greek mathematics represents the unique field from the wider domain of the general history of science which was included in the research agenda of so many and so distinguished scholars, from so varied scientific communities (historians of science, historians of philosophy, mathematicians, philologists, philosophers of science, archeologists etc. ), while new scholarship of the highest quality continues to be produced. This volume includes 19 classic papers on the history of Greek mathematics that were published during the entire 20th century and affected significantly the state of the art of this field. It is divided into six self-contained sections, each one with its own editor, who had the responsibility for the selection of the papers that are republished in the section, and who wrote the introduction of the section. It constitutes a kind of a Reader book which is today, one century after the first publications of Tannery, Zeuthen, Heath and the other outstanding figures of the end of the 19th and the beg- ning of 20th century, rather timely in many respects.
