Book Synopsis Duplicate Bridge Schedules by : Ian McKinnon
Download or read book Duplicate Bridge Schedules written by Ian McKinnon and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bridge Movements Encyclopedia. Duplicate Bridge Schedules, History and Mathematics is an essential book for tournament directors as well as bridge players curious about the history of the game of duplicate bridge. This comprehensive volume supplies you with all the movements ever thought of and many hundreds of new ones. Included for each movement are the variations, modifications, origins, authors and history of its development. Each movement is then assessed for its measure of quality, called calibre. The author presents a brand new event type, the Scissor movement - run like any Howell movement. In this type of event the players play as pairs as usual, but also have their teammates as another pair, never meeting each other. This allows the event to be scored both as teams and pairs, producing a winning team and a winning pair. Duplicate bridge players will find the history of their favorite game most intriguing. The book delves into the lives of well-known figures such as John T. Mitchell and Edwin C. Howell. When did they live, what did they contribute to bridge, and what were the politics of their time? In addition, many lesser-known historical figures are examined for their contributions to the development of duplicate movements. For the mathematically inclined there are plenty of interesting oddities. The mathematics of balance of movements, giving the measure of quality, is thoroughly discussed. The controversial debate over movement quality, along with its history, is presented through the ideas and opinions of players and mathematicians. IAN McKINNON is a mathematician, expert bridge player, tournament director, author and computer professional. Through circumstance, around 1970, he started tournament directing at a major bridge club in Sydney which eventually led to him being the senior Tournament Director within the Australian Bridge Federation during the 1970s. He produced his first book, Bridge Directing Complete, in 1979. All those years of experience, and the last ten years of intense research and computer programming, have resulted in this book.

Download or read book Bridge Bidding written by Nicolae Sfetcu and published by Nicolae Sfetcu. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This e-book present some of the most important bridge bidding systems used used in duplicate bridge tournaments, detailing the most known bridge bidding system, Standard American Yellow Card, by using a logical sequential order for openings, answers, competitive bids and defensive play in order to help the players during the games. Much of the complexity in bridge arises from the difficulty of arriving at a good final contract in the auction. A bidding system in contract bridge is the set of agreements and understandings assigned to calls and sequences of calls used by a partnership, and includes a full description of the meaning of each treatment and convention. Standard American Yellow Card is a specific set of partnership agreements and conventions, using Standard American as a base. Standard American Yellow Card is a very specific collection of agreements, which can, of course, be modified and augmented by partnership agreement. In practical use, the term is often mis-used to refer to Standard American in general, or it could refer to a system that used SAYC as a base and made additional augmentations or changes to the base agreements.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide of bridge game: online games, variants, suits, hand evaluation, bidding systems, techniques, strategy, tactics. Contract bridge, usually known simply as bridge, is a trick-taking card game of skill for four players, usually sitting around a table, who form two partnerships, or "sides". The partners on each side sit opposite one another. The game consists of two main parts – bidding (or auction) and play; the rules of play are rather simple and similar to other trick-taking games. However, the bidding and associated conventions are much more complex, and represent the true learning barrier to new players. Also, there is an immense variety of techniques in play of the hand, whose effective use requires learning and experience.
Book Synopsis How to Win at Duplicate Bridge by : Marshall Miles
Download or read book How to Win at Duplicate Bridge written by Marshall Miles and published by . This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A great book . . . the last word on duplicate techniques." -Bridge World Enthusiastically endorsed by leading authorities, this advanced book on bridge will prove invaluable to any player who wants to improve his game. The author, a top-flight West Coast tournament player, takes up where most bridge experts leave off, dwelling not on fundamentals, but on the finer points and techniques needed to turn good players into superb ones. Mr. Miles deals more with exceptions and modifications rather than with general rules. He discusses match-point philosophy, hand evaluation, and forcing bids, with particular emphasis on slam bidding and competitive bidding. His chapter on "What's New At Bridge" covers the Roth-Stone system, the "Bulldog" system, Culbertson's asking bids, psychic bids, and "shooting." With clarity and authority, he has written an essential book for "greedy players who want to win far more than their fair share of the time." "An excellent new book. It is accurate, and I have to agree with practically all of Miles's ideas." -Oswald Jacoby
